  • *~* What is Manga? *~*
Manga is Japanese for "comics." It's basically a comic book in black and white and sometimes read from right to left rather than left to right. They usually look like small thick books (alot like telephone books but smaller) which usually reach more than a hundred pages. Some mangas are thin and available in paper backs.

*~* What are the Pokemon Mangas? *~*
Currently, there are 5 popular mangas in Japan. They are: Dengeki Pikachu By Toshiro Ono, Pokemon Special By Hidenari Kasuka and MATO, Pokemon Pipipi by Yumi Tsukirino, Pokemon Getto Da Ze by Miho Asada and Pokemon Zensho. There are also some minor Pokemon Mangas.

    Dengeki Pikachu and Toshiro Ono
One of the most famous and infamous of all Pokemon Manga Authors is Toshiro ono. His Over Exagerations of "body parts" claimed frustrations to Viz. Ono's manga is the most edited in Pokemon Manga history. Ono's style is very famous in Japan and his storylines give off some "naughty dialouges". Dengeki Pikachu follows much of the anime. This includes Misty and Brock's journey with Ash and some manga appearances from the anime like Ritchie.

Den-geki uncesored Is a good comparison site. However, I warn you, it contains graphic material ;).

Hidenari Kasuka and MATO. Pokemon Special.
One of the best manga in the world (IMO ;)) is written by Hidenari Kasuka and drawn by MATO. Compared to the anime, the story line is very complex and the characters introduce a new format to Pokemon. Team Rocket in this story has its upperhand in Kanto controlling some corrupt Gym Leaders. Antagonists in this manga are in wide arrays. From Team Rocket, The Elite Four to the Mysterious Masked Man. The characters are named after the Versions, however, in Japan, Gary is known as Green and in the US Gary is known as Blue. Every chapter cycles through the different charcaters but in the end, everyone meets each other in the final showdown. MATO's style is sort of Chibi-ish(but that doesn't matter to fans like me) and Kasuka's storylines add a "darker side" to Pokemon.

  • Yumi Tsukirino and Pokemon Pipipi
Yumi Tsukirino is an author of ?shoujo Manga?, that is, Manga aimed at young girls. She fits the generic bill very well. The manga is full of cute, fluffy, romantic stand-alone stories about Maron/Hazel, a young girl with a pet Pikachu. The comic follows Hazel's ill-fated attempts to win the love of her pokemon trainer friend Almond. The stories all stand alone, though characters tend to be reoccuring. In each comic, Maron/Hazel tries to win Almond's attention, compete with her rival, Coconut, and solve everyone's problems. Her clueless Pikachu and clefairy are her constant companions, with cameos by just about any pok?mon you can dream up.

    Pokemon Getto Da Ze
Pokemon Getto Da Ze! ("Pokemon Get them All!"), released in 1999, is a comedy-adventure series about a pokemon trainer named Shuu. Like Satoshi, his first pokemon is a Pikachu, but this Pikachu can talk. Shuu, using a headset-shaped device called an Enkamu (In-com), is able to communicate with his pokemon. Getto Da Ze is a collection of a bunch of short stories that show Shuu catching pokemon through..."unusual" methods. This manga doesn't follow the game very much, so you won't find out much about pokemon weaknesses or gym leaders in this one. It's a manga meant to be fun, and is definitely worth checking out.

    Pokemon Zensho
Pokemon Zensho came out in Japan in 1998. It follows the video game closer than any other manga incarnation of Pokemon. The one-volume manga follows the plot of the game, from leaving Masara Town to fighting Shigeru at the end of the game. There are many things in this manga that haven't been represented in the anime or any of the other manga, such as what the Silph Scope would look like and the search for the Safari warden's dentures. I can't stand the artwork, but for following the game so closely it's a pretty good manga.

Oni's Notes: I don't seem to like the art of this manga. It sorta.... "cheesy". But the plot and the storyline follow the game coordinately and Pikachu evolves.

  • In Pokemon Zensho, Charizard is just a Charmeleon that is bigger and has wings, it only has one horn on its head.
