Blaaah I tried that and it still didn't work. I've tried several different versions of ruby too. I guess I'll just wait for the next beta. But it should make you feel good that I tried so hard to play this hack! I really wanted to give it a go, it looks great!

Ok. Here is another solution to the white-screen:
First go to VBA ->Options ->Emulator ->Save Type. Change your save type to Flash 128k and see if it works.

Ah, nevermind. Apparently the ROM file I had was corrupted or something, so I got a new Ruby ROM and the UPS patching worked like a charm.
