Decided to pop my old gen I cartridges in my Gameboy and see still if the battery was still good / my saves were still there (as my Silver version battery died eons ago).

To my surprise Yellow version still had my old save in tact - but unfortunately my Red version won't reach the menu :( When I turn it on it launches, the intro plays, but if I press A to continue to the menu it simply goes white and nothing happens.

Has anyone experienced this with an old cartridge and does anyone know if there is a way to replace / fix whatever is broke?

I have a Silver that doesn't keep time and occasionally erases saves even after two separate fresh battery installations. It sometimes does what your Red is doing, crashing at the menu screen. I can confirm that my Silver has a damaged motherboard because I accidentally touched it with a hot soldering iron while trying to replace the battery for the first time. Have you had your Red's battery replaced? It could be the motherboard. I would try cleaning it, but if it's like my Silver, nothing will fix it.

I haven't tried to replace it as I just tested it last night; however, I will be replacing it and seeing if that resolves anything.

I'm not sure the battery would have any effect on reaching the menu though, sounds like a hardware failure - but will try regardless! Fingers crossed.

It shouldn't do that, I have way older games on the gameboy that still work fine. Perhaps your cartridgde got a case of improper storing?

If it's damaged you'll be better off trashing it and buy a new one, Pokemon red does for a couple of dollars nowadays. Hell you even get them for free if you buy a bunch of games, I have 3 copies of Pokemon Red because of that.

What - a couple of dollars from where? All legitimate copies I have seen have been an easy 50-80 AUD.

It's been stored in a Gameboy Carry Case sitting in a shelf for years, so not sure if that is improper or not :P

The original Pokemon red, a loose copy, which is what I assume you want.

    https://www.ebay.com/itm/Pokemon-Re...963057?hash=item4b124388f1:g:7CEAAOSwfVpYqlFz - Here's one for 18 dollars

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Pokemon-Red-And-Yellow-Game-Boy-Carts-/262851238740 - 16 pounds for both Pokemon Red and Yellow.

just be on the lookout for these online, there's tons of markets for those since retro is cool once more. Also that particular game sold so well your chances are very high to find it somewhere in your area, a flea market for example. =)
Also, no, that's not improper. You just had some really bad luck apparently.

Yeah sounds like it's just bad luck. It really hasn't been knocked around or left lying outside which is such a shame.

Thanks for providing those links - they're end up being about $50ish AUD in total including shipping and conversion :(

A lot of the cheap Pokemon games on Ebay are pirated copies too which come with their own array of issues.

Looks like I'll probably just call it a loss and not stress too much about it. If I stumble across another one that doesn't cost as much as Sun and Moon I might pick it up - otherwise I still have a working Yellow :)

The pirate ones are easy to spot though. Most of them say "GAME" on the cartridge instead of "GAME BOY".

By the way, if you have a Nintendo 3DS, you can grab Red, Blue or Yellow from the e-shop for about 10 dollars. It will be compatible with Pokebank.

Haha yeah, they are quite easy to spot, you're right - most of them are fake in general. The legit ones are generally quite pricey! It's all good though.

AND YES! I did get Yellow & Blue on my 3DS already :D
I do enjoy having the cartridges though hehehe.
