Courtney Cox: Chpt 1, Pt 2
Oh! Why did she pick this? Courtney groaned behind her shirt, which she pulled over her nose and mouth to stop her from breathing in sand. She felt the gritty, loose dirt get in between her toes and under her shoes and
everywhere. She wished she'd gone to the side with all of the sea shells, or maybe into that forest even if she had small navigational ability. She just walked forward. A few minutes ago, maybe five, maybe fifteen, she didn't know, but a few minutes ago the sand had cleared, giving her a path to... To
somewhere. She followed that direction now, hoping she wasn't slowly going off course.
She had yet to find a good spot to release her pokemon, she was doubting whether she should or not. This sand was terrible and the force of it grazing over her skin burned. She didn't want to put that on her pokemon, but... Maybe. Maybe it was one that could help her out? True, she didn't know what was in there. She could possibly have a friend who can shield her from the wind. She dug in her pocket, taking out the pokeball she was given. She hoped, even prayed a little. Not only for her own relief, but for the fact that she didn't want to put a poor, small pokemon into the force of these winds.
Courtney tapped the button on the ball to enlarge it and then tapped it again to open it up, releasing the mystery inside. The wind was so sandy that even the light from the ball was clouded, and once it cleared she could barely see who was in front of her. The wind was loud, swooshing everywhere and any direction. It almost carried away the voice of the pokemon in front of her.
"
Kiiiiip!" It cried out, obviously distressed by its tone. Courtney's eyes widened, she knew that cry. Her mind automatically flashed memories at her. She'd never had this pokemon herself, but one of her best friends did. He'd gotten his own for his birthday, it was the sweetest pokemon she ever knew. Her friend raised it up to be a Marshtomp before it was taken away. A Mudkip wasn't the best idea of a formidable pokemon that could stand up to strong winds. "
Kiiiiip!" The pokemon cried out again.
"Mudkip!" Courtney launched herself forward, bending down in one, quick swoop to grab the pokemon up in her arms. The Mudkip was a girl. Her eyes were shut tight and her little legs flailed around. She didn't know who was grabbing her and it scared her. The Mudkip cried out again, wiggling around with all its might to get away from her. Courtney held it to her chest. "It's okay, girl! I won't hurt you Mudkip!" Her words didn't seem to get through, however. The Mudkip trying to struggle. She was so scared and Courtney felt sorry for letting her out. The wind, the sand, it was probably all so confusing. "I'm sorry, Mudkip," Courtney said before tapping her on the back with the pokeball and pulling her back into the ball. Courtney minimized and pocketed it once more. "I'm sorry..." She muttered again.
~+~
Courtney walked... She didn't know how long, actually. She just kept walking... Through the sand and the wind and the dirt. Oh, it felt like an eternity. She just trudged forward, keeping her head down only slightly against the wind. Sometimes she thought it got worse, sometimes she thought it got better. Lately, it seemed like it was all the same. She may have been walking for a couple hours, by herself, looking for some shelter for her Mudkip who was maybe calmed down by now. However, that idea seemed hopeless. Everything in this place just... Just looked the same. There was no break in texture or terrain, just sand and sand and sand. Even when the wind broke, the horizon was the same. All the dryness, it was making her thirsty, but if she drank anything?--assuming she had water--then it'd just get sandy too. She held off on it and kept walking.
She maybe went for another thirty minutes before anything changed. Courtney had to squint her eyes when she saw what seemed to be a monument before her. The wind and sand had thickened by now. The air was a dark orange and she could see nothing. Nothing except... A formation ahead of her. She stared in amazement as sand seemed to form into a huge ball in one, single point and then thin off into a stream before it melded back into the winds. What was it? She couldn't have guessed. Courtney started towards the awe-striking form. Once by it, she tried to see through the veil, but got nothing. The sand here was thick, like a wall almost. She wondered if she could even...
Courtney reached out a hand, timidly at first, but then with more conviction. Her hand passed through easily, her skin being buffered by rough sand. It even hurt a little. However, she didn't think about it when she felt on the other side.
Nothing.
Absolutely nothing. She felt no more sand, no rocks, just air... Her eyes widened and her curiosity grew. She then grinned, maybe... This was what she was looking for! In a reckless burst, she ran into the form of sand, being hit by a short slap of sand. It was well worth it. She was now free of dirt and uncomfortable grains. The winds didn't move here. Courtney grinned wide and then let out a loud cheer.
"Freedom!" She exclaimed, jumping in her own excitement. Ohyeah, look at her. Navigation expert. Courtney swung her hips, doing a little victory jig at the sand curtain. She was triumphant and she yelled and cheered and exclaimed all while being happy. She wiggled her hips and started a revolving twist. As she went one-eighty, though, she began to see a form behind it. It was huge, dark, intimidating. She stopped dead when she saw it and looked up, amazed at the height. It was a cave. A jut of rock somehow breaking over the surface of the sand. This was what was blocking its smooth progression. There was a large, ominous opening that lead to only blackness. Where it could go, there was no telling. It was likely a dead end.
Courtney shuddered at the imposing formation's stature. It was almost as if it were a monster. A large, hulking, hungry one that sat still to lure in unsuspecting prey. Like her. She shuddered again, feeling her heart beat. "Wow..." She whispered, lowering her gaze to the interior of the rock. She stepped forward, wanting to go even with the dangers of mystery. She didn't think about the what ifs or any of the risks. She was eager to see inside.
Entering, she only had a few feet of light before she was drowned in the darkness. Her steps had a slight echo as she progressed. Here, there was no sand. She could feel the ground slope downward as she walked, but she could not tell where she was going. She couldn't see her hand if she put it to her nose. She heard nothing but the landing of her feet on the rock floor as she descended. It was not long, however, before she reached the bottom of the slope. She took a few steps and then stopped. She couldn't see. Hardly at all. Courtney crouched down, slinging her bookbag around to her front. She felt around for the zippers, hearing jingles but not touching what she wanted. It took about half a minute, but she finally found one. She unzipped the largest pocket and started feeling inside. There were a couple items here, a lot that she didn't know what they were. She didn't recognize the shapes of some, and others could have been a lot of things. It wasn't until she got too the very bottom of the bag that she felt a long, slender item with what seemed to be a button and a wide top. She pressed on the button and noticing it not budging, she pushed it forward. Suddenly, her backpack was illuminated by white light. Courtney grinned big.
A flashlight!
"Now let's have a look around," she said, pulling it out and waving the beam this way and that. The floor and walls of the cave were slate gray and little crystals coming out of the walls glowed and reflected when her light hit them. When she saw them, Courtney immediately wanted one, but she was smart enough to know she wasn't strong enough to pull it out. The air down here was cooler than outside and made her feel a lot safer. In fact, now with still air, she could feel all of the sand on her. She shuddered, not liking how uncomfortable it was or how it seemed to be
everywhere on her. She tried to ignore it and the mystery of how long it'd take for her to get a shower.
At least it was quiet down here. Peaceful, safe, and... And... OH! Courtney's eyes went big. Mudkip! She reached into her sandy pocket and pulled out the pokeball once more. Two taps and once again the Mudkip was released. The light from the beam lit up the whole cave, it seemed, just for a moment and then cleared away. The darkeness hid the pokemon from Courtney's sight, this time. She put her flashlight on the blue pokemon and saw her with her eyes shut tight and her body tensed into the tightest ball she could make. The pokemon was shaking. Courtney frowned, feeling sorry for her. She was scared and it was her fault. The Mudkip's blue body was discolored with dust from orange sand that still clung onto her body.
"Hey! Don't be scared, it's alright! You're with me!" Courtney smiled in a reassuring manner. The Mudkip opened her eyes, squinting by the light and looked up at her idea of where Courtney's face would be. Almost as soon as she did, her eyes went wide and she seemed to freeze. Courtney's face went confused. "Hey, what's wrong?" She took a step towards the pokemon and immediately the Mudkip jumped up. She ran away just as fast. Courtney's eyes went wide. "Wait!" She ran after her pokemon who was now trying to escape her.
"
Kiiiip!" Her pokemon yelled out, just like it did in the storm. Courtney followed Mudkip to her best ability, trying to keep her flashlight on her body. It was hard running in this cave. She didn't know where she or Mudkip was going and the both of them stumbled on rocks and cracks every so often. Courtney's sandals clicked out loud, making loud echoes that was probably scaring Mudkip even more. The chase took them both through twists and turns that Courtney wasn't even sure she could navigate out of. She only got glimpses of the cave's formations. She only saw, for less than a second, parts that had sand flowing slowly or areas where holes seemed to be cut into the sides of the cave.
"Mudkip! Stop, please!" She didn't. She kept running as fast as she could. Just as she had before, Mudkip took a hard right down into another part of the cave. Before Courtney went around too, she heard another yell from Mudkip. Alarm hitting her, she flashed her light around the floor, trying to find her. The light went over a flash of blue, when Courtney put it back in the spot, the color was gone and she heard another yell, still close. "Mudkip!?" Another yell of the pokemon's name came and Courtney pinpointed her pokemon exactly. The light fell on Mudkip. Like she did before, she looked scared, but this time her wasn't focus on Courtney. "Mu--" Courtney's words were cut off when a flash of silver knocked Mudkip out of the sight of her light. "What?" She moved it in the direction they had gone.
Courtney's eyes went wide with what she saw. It was not a necessarily threatening looking pokemon. It was small bodied and had silver, armored plating. The blue eyes protected on its head were narrowed and locked on Mudkip. It threw itself at the pokemon, but Mudkip hopped out of the way. By her face and her actions, it was clear that Mudkip didn't want to fight, but it looked like the Aron was going to tussle anyways. It jumped at Mudkip again, only to have her move out of the way. This didn't seem like a battle they could run away from.
"Mudkip! You have to fight back!" Mudkip looked at her and in the moment of distraction was hit by the Aron's tackle. Courtney frowned. "Come on, Mudkip! Use tackle!" Mudkip found her footing quickly and then retaliated, hitting the Aron back with her own tackle. Courtney smiled, liking the feeling of commanding again. Of battling again. She hadn't done this in a long time. She might be rusty, but... The feeling, it was still the same. "Alright! Tackle again!" Mudkip executed the attack once more, landing it successfully. With two hits on it, the Aron looked more angry than it had been before. It cried out and charged at Mudkip. She hopped out of the way, dodging again, but the Aron quickly switched direction, getting her right on her flank. The close proximity made the hit hard.
Mudkip was knocked away, but she managed to get back on her feet. She was still unwanting to battle, Courtney could tell on her face, but she had a concentration to her that could be seen in her eyes. Courtney smiled, she liked that. The Aron ran towards Mudkip again, bringing another tackle.
"Mudkip, growl!" Mudkip frowned and a rumble escaped her throat. The Aron's advance slowed as it hesitated for a moment before resuming its attack again. Mudkip jumped from the way once more, her growl still going as she moved slowly towards the Aron. Seeing her, it backed up, eyes no longer sure. Making sure her flashlight was still on them, Courtney smiled wider. They had the advantage, it looked like. Maybe that Aron would back off and leave now. That, however, was incorrect thinking. The Aron lunged forward, getting a direct hit on Mudkip. However, the attack wasn't as strong as it had been the first couple of times. She retaliated, tackling back from her own accord. The Aron stumbled from the blow, wincing from the damage done. When it found its footing, it narrowed its eyes and tensed its body. Its armor plating glowed for a second before dimming. Mudkip sent another tackle, this time the blow didn't affect Aron as much.
"
Aer!" It noised, a look on its face that was the closest it could come to a smile. It lunged forward again, hitting Mudkip once more.
"Mudkip! Growl and then tackle it!" Mudkip frowned and the rumble escaped her throat again, she made the same slow advance, backing the Aron away from her. Just as it did before, the Aron jumped at her for a tackle, but Mudkip dodged to the left and hit it right on its side. The Aron stumbled and then fell, landing on its back. It noised its name, its legs wiggling in the air. It was not like that long, however, it moved its body until it rolled back onto its feet, ready to fight again.
"
Aer!" Hmm. Courtney thought for a moment, remembering the Aron's last actions. By what it did, she thought that... That maybe the Aron had a problem being on its back. That could bring an advantage to them.
"Mudkip! Tackle it again, we've got to get it back on its rump!" Mudkip lunged forward, but the Aron saw it coming, dodging easily out of the way. Without anything to stop her, Mudkip hit the cave wall head first. She groaned and before she could move, the Aron made a blow right to her back. The Aron made the attack again and again, not giving Mudkip a chance to move anywhere. "Growl!" Following Courtney's command, Mudkip turned her face towards the Aron and let out another growl, but this time it wasn't phased, all it did was tackle her again. Courtney frowned, they had to get out of that spot. "Tackle Mudkip! Don't 'im bully you!" Mudkip poised herself to jump, but the Aron did too. At the same time the too pokemon lunged together, both getting head hits instead of body shots. The tackles were more like a conjoined headbutt. Mudkip's legs shook, Aron's hard head having an affect on her. The Aron itself stumbled backwards, dizzy itself. "Mudkip! Now's your chance!" Mudkip shook her head, trying to normalize herself. She stumbled a little when she attempted to advance, but her footwork became more steady as she went forward. She tackled the Aron, almost throwing her full body at it. The Aron stumbled back. "Again!" Mudkip made her tackle again, this time causing the Aron to fall back. The spike on its spine prevented it from doing a full roll. The Aron's legs wiggled again as it tried to get up. "We're almost done Mudkip, just keep tackling!" Mudkip went forward and tackled, jumped, and lunged over and over again, hitting the Aron as many times as she could.
The Aron, not able to do much more, pulled its legs into its body and shut its eyes tight. Once again its armor glowed for just a moment. This didn't seem to help much, Mudkip's attacks did not stop.
"Okay, Mudkip, that's good." Hearing Courtney, Mudkip stopped her next tackle mid-step and backed up. She was panting, Courtney could tell, and she had a red mark on her forehead. All of the attacks and being attacked... She was probably tired. She would have to say the same for the Aron. It lay still on the ground, breathing just as hard as Mudkip, if not harder. It lay still for a moment and then moved again, rolling itself back onto its feet. It was tired and it was weak, but somehow, undefeated. Whether it knew it lost or not, it wouldn't stop fighting. Courtney could see its legs shaking and the tired look in its eyes. The Aron's gaze still held determination. It wouldn't back down until it couldn't move. It was a fighter, she could tell and she admired it. A smirk came across Courtney's face. She liked this little guy, though she couldn't say it liked either of them. It didn't move, keeping its eyes on Mudkip and waiting for her to attack first. Courtney found it... Kind of adorable. She wished she could keep it, but she didn't have any pokeba-- Courtney's eyebrows shot up. Yes she did!
She remembered suddenly when she was rummaging around in her backpack. She'd felt little round balls near the bottom of the bag. Those had to be pokeballs. If they weren't, she'd suspect Ravyne gave them toys. Courtney, fast as she could, swung the backpack to her front and dug inside. Clumsily grabbing a ball, she lifted it out and enlarged it. She'd taken too long, though. The Aron cried out again, the wait had been to long for it. It ran towards Mudkip with the rest of its strength, going for another tackle. Worry immediately struck Courtney, she was no good at hitting moving targets and she didn't know how much more of this fighting her pokemon could take.
Courtney didn't have a moment to think, otherwise it'd take too long. She tossed the ball, trying to get the Aron as it came towards Mudkip. Of course, her aim was off. Instead of the Aron, her ball flew towards Mudkip. The small pokemon was quick, though. Form the corner of her eye she saw the spherical object coming towards her. With one swift movement of her body she swatted her tail at it, hitting the ball and redirecting it right towards the Aron. The ball hit the pokemon dead on and, as designed, it opened up with a resonating
pop!, sending an almost blinding flash of white light at the Aron, engulfing it. Devouring the light, the ball landed on the ground with metal clinks. When it came to rest, it shook, having a wrestle with the pokmon within. For a moment, Courtney wondered why these balls were built to work in such a suspenseful way. Just like everyone who attempted to capture a new partner, she watched the balls movements intently, her wishes on the positive.
(Ugh. Post got steadily worse, sorry. :( And I hope the cave is okay.)
