Well that's what he was really, he had some say...But he was more or less just a rep. The popes from the past though had more power...But that always lead to trouble. O_o

Just an overview of the persons life an devotion to the church and commen good will. Though, it shouldn't take that long with him.
 
Well he's dead, so what can I say? I don't really know what the pope does, lead the preists of the Vatican? o.0 So be it, let him rest in peace. He's lived a long time already.
 
I wonder how long it's gonna take for the voting of the new pope.

On another note, its good that so many are showing his family support in the Vatican. *Not at PC, 'cause they just say "Oh. He was ok, didn't know him. Too bad he's dying/died." pah*
 
Like Kylie, I know nothing about the pope. All I know about him is that he did something to impact a lot of peoples' lives. And like Kota, the pope was just a famous priest to me. But he was human. A human in pain. It was just a matter of time until he died and it finally gets rid of his pain and suffering.
 
Is a pope elected based on his good works? O_o

Funny thing is this pope'real name was Karlo. They let you pick whatever name you wanna be known as.
 
I was raised Catholic, but I'm not religious right now (might be in the future -- never know o_o). I do respect all that the pope did, however. Sure, I might not agree with everything the Catholic Church says, does, or stands for, but I do respect how faith brings people together in unity. The Pope, although he may not have any major power in society anymore is a great symbol of peace and love if you ask me, even if you don't follow the same religion that he does.

Mmm... how should I put this...? I guess I remember how just a few years back, World Youth Day was held here in Toronto. I wasn't here for most of it, but I do remember what it was like when so many people were all here for the same purpose and how loving and caring all of them were. If that's what the Pope and their religion did for them, then the Pope should deserve everyone's utmost respect even if just because he brought people together for a reason other than hate, for once. I wish him all the best in whatever the afterlife holds. o.o

I agree that its good that he died of natural causes. Just imagine the riots if he'd be assasinated for some reason x.x;;

true that. When I made this thread, I almost expected the kinds of replies that TAD and Happy Dude made. In order to fully appreciate all that John Paul II did for our society, you'd have to have a certain level of faith in organized religion, something I don't notice around PC that much.

While the pope does not have much actual power, he does have a large influence on the nearly 80 million Catholics in the world, and it is very admirable to have one bold voice for social conservatism in a society that is quickly falling towards the social left.
 
Allow me to elaborate, if you will: When I made that post, I was feeling a little annoyed at you over a statement in your first post. "All religious people around the world." I disagrre with this, but now that I'm over that, I can better provide my own thoughts...

No, I am not involved with organized religion. Bad experiences. This does not mean that I hate or distrust it. John Paul II was a good man who lead a moral life, stood up for his beliefs until the end, and brought joy and faith to millions of people. for this and more, I admire and respect him. As a pope, he was a wonderful man who tried to right the wrongs done by the Church in the past. He did not fall into pride over his station or the role of the Church and united many people worldwide peacefully. He was honest and admirable. I personally regret his death.
 
The pope was one person, and in my opinion it is un-healthy to praise one person. I do have respect for him...but what exactly did he do? When I die will I get that much attention...NO! And nor should I want anybody to no matter what I accomplish in my life. I was reading the newpaper today and I noticed a picture of the pope(dead) and he was the center of the picture...and to the side is only a glimpse of my lord Jesus Christ on the cross...like more people praised him than they did the lord...He even has more than a week or whatever for people to mourn his death! Why? I am sure if that the pope himself wouldn't want people to be sad...its almost sick! I am not Catholic and maybe I don't know that much about him but the lord is more important.

Watching the stuff on TV and seeing how everyone from anywhere and any religion (or without religion) mourns is mighty powerful. I might not have liked all his stances on things, but if someone touched that many lives in such a positive way then it is indubitably a great loss.
 
Being Catholic, I am sad, as well as relieved. He was suffering, and I generally dont like to see people suffer. He was a great person, who helped lots of people, but he is in a better place now.
