PURE EVIL TEAMS or maybe not?

They are commonly (at least unofficially) referred to as "evil teams" and it sure seems like they are evil in the games, anime and (maybe even more so) manga sometimes. But do you really want to call them evil? Why/why not?

Consider the goals of the various teams (Rocket, Aqua/Magma, Galactic, Plasma, Neo Plasma, Flare), the behavior of their grunts and leaders and also consider how you really want to define "evil". Of course you may comment on every team specifically, or only one, or every team in general. Reply as much or as little as you feel like in the discussion :3

    Let's go down the list.

Teams Aqua and Magma are pretty much a big joke. They're a bunch of radical environmentalists with no sense of reality. Honestly people, it doesn't take a Rocket Scientist (see what I dd there) to know that if you turn the planet into either a barren wasteland or a waterworld that it would cause the extinction of almost all living beings. Archie and Maxie were morons and their Admins and Grunts were fools for following them.

Team Galactic seemed threatening at first, but Cyrus just wound up being an self righteous, egotistical, lunatic who didn't actually think his plan through. Say he succeeded in destroying the world and remaking it in his ideal image. How are you going to rule? more so, how do you and your small band of followers expect to survive and thrive? You've basically wiped out every skilled professional from the face of the earth and there would be no real order or infrastructure. I reason that it would be a pain in the ass to get anything done. Cyrus would seem incompetent, there would be discord and later anarchy. Eventually, they would all just die off anyway.

Team Plasma under Ghetsis is probably the second most evil organization. Ghetsis had manipulated a child and made him the figure-head of a group of people who thought they were doing the right thing. He also nearly succeeded his goal. The problem lies again with Ghetsis' short sightedness. What happens after you become the most powerful person in Unova? My guess is that he'd probably end up like Scar in Lion King; a bored, egotistical douchebag.

Team Flare pretty much fall under the same bracket as those previously mentioned.

Team Rocket under Giovanni is the most evil and effective team in Pokemon for the following reasons:

    1. Giovanni. He is intelligent, ruthless, powerful; he's the badass amongst evil bosses and he keeps everything together. He's the Pokemon version of Michael Corleone.

    2. They are smart. Instead of having the convoluted and cliched plan to destroy the world, the hierarchy of Team Rocket knows that true power lies in controlling the socioeconomic system of a country. They essentially control the socioeconomic hub of Kanto, Celedon City, thereby controlling Kanto's economy and stability and by extension, its' populace. Added to that, Giovanni has placed himself in the inner circle of Kanto's state authority. He's a Gym Leader, an essential part of the Pokemon League thereby putting him in the know and a couple of steps ahead of the law enforcement looking to stop Team Rocket.

    3. They have a realistic endgame that they actually succeed in; making a profit. As I've said, they control the economy of Kanto. They also have a monopoly in the market for rare and valuable items. The illegality and cruelty surrounding how they obtain these items make them even more valuable and that makes Team Rocket even more wealthy.

    4. The Grunts. the Grunts of every other team are essentially misguided fools. Rocket Grunts, on the other hand, exemplify what is means to be the most evil and despicable beings on the planet. They do evil; steal other trainers Pokemon, mutilate Slopokes, kill Cubones for their skulls and a slew of other deeds all in the name of profit and power. As if that wasn't bad enough, they also admit to their evil deeds and take pleasure in them.

I would agree that Team Rocket was ruthless and effective (In Gen 1, anyway), but I don't know how evil Giovanni is. There is a theory that Giovanni had Team Rocket do everything so he could confront and stop Mewtwo. Supposedly, Giovanni, Blaine, and Mr. Fugi were all apart of the project to clone Mew. Fugi thought they were going to far, Giovanni thought they had to finish the project, and Blaine was somewhere in-between. Mewtwo ends up escaping, and the three split paths. Giovanni is concerned about what he helped create, and he wants to stop it. He sends Team Rocket to Mt. Moon to get Pokemon Fossils, which he thought he could revive to get very strong pokemon. He is trying to get more recruits to help him on Nugget Bridge. He runs the casino in Celadon City to help with the finances. He steals the Silph-Scope and takes over the Pokemon Tower to catch Ghost Types, which Mewtwo would be weak to. The last part in his plan is to get the Masterball from the president of Silph Co., which even a pokemo like Mewtwo cannot escape. Whether or not he was going to use Mewtwo for evil purposes, you've got me there.

It's true that Team Rocket were ruthless and overpowering, but they seemed like gangsters to me; not really evil. There isn't much in the Pokemon series that you'd call "evil", you can say bad and things like that, but not evil. Team Rocket is the closest to evil you can get, what with their animal cruelty and killing of Pokemon, and they probably are evil, but other than that, only evil-esque team out there. Team Galactic with their ambitions and goal to create a universe was pretty threatening to me, seeing as that would destroy the universe we currently live in. I still wouldn't call them evil, more of bad guys than purely evil.

I think the thing that is most laughable is that these so called evil teams succumb to children so often!

James and Jessie are clearly not evil, it's hard to tell about other team members from the anime - they're just... stupid? Mislead? Wanting to find something they can succeed at? I'm not really sure - but there are plenty of times we have seen James as a compassionate, kind person (especially to pokemon). Other members of TR seem a lot more ruthless and closer to what I'd expect from 'evil'.

In the game, I often found Team Plasma as very dull and unexciting, they strike me as less of an evil team and more brainwashed protesters. Only the old sage dudes had any evil agendas, the grunts are boring and mindless.

Well, for me Team Rocket is THE most evil, hands down! For proof read the other posts! But, let us remember our old friend Ghetsis! This guy is a total psychopath. He has totally lost it by B2W2. He even tries to kill you with Kyurem, which luckily N stops that pretty quick (and with epic music!). But think about it, Team Rocket may have killed a pokemon, which is still very bad, and even worse since they achieved it, but Ghetsis tried to kill THE PLAYER! Another thing I want to mention, Team Galactic made the Galactic Bomb. If they used it right, they could have caused countless deaths as well. Add on top of that, what Team Galactic were doing to the pixies in their headquarters, that's just wrong. Pain and suffering for the pixies!
