Greetings all! First post and all that jazz.

Anyway, I've seen a lot of different pokemon challenges - Monotype where all pokemon have to share a type, Scramble where a friend picks your team, Speedrun for best time, Single where you only get one pokemon, Unevolved where all your pokemon must have higher forms that you never unlock, etc. One challenge I've never seen listed is the one I'm doing now in FireRed, the "Pure Type Challenge", where every single pokemon on your team has only one type.

This is a significant limitation! It means you can't use most of the starters in most of the games! It also means you'll never be able to train anything that can use Fly. Most of the Legendaries and Pseudo-Legendaries are dual-type (often with Flying or Dragon in there). In addition, a lot of pokemon gain and lose secondary types as they evolve, reducing your options still further.

In exchange, I got the change to really make use of a lot of B-listers, pokemon whose stats and movelist were otherwise sub-par, but who represented rare types. Tangela is the prime example, the only Gen1 grass-type allowed under the challenge. Psyduck was my Water - I was shocked when I found out he didn't have the Psychic subtype.

My team (note: this was partially a Scramble challenge as well, and the friend made me promise to train everybody equally)
    Normal: Meowth
    Water: Psyduck
    Fire: Growlithe
    Psychic: Mr Mime
    Grass: Tangela
    Electric: Voltorb
    Ground: Cubone
    Dragon: Dragonair (holding Everstone)
    Fighting: Mankey
    Poison: Ekans

Rock, Steel, Dark, Bug, Ghost, Ice, and Flying don't have pure-type members that I know of in FireRed.

    So, questions!

    1) Do you think this is a good challenge? Would you do it?

    2) Has anyone ever proposed this challenge before? Do we know their teams?

    3) What are the various pure-type pokemon of each type, for each game? Is there a list anywhere?

    4) Which pure-type pokemon would you like to see in a team like this, if I do any other games?

    Thanks!

I would do it, but you're missing out on a bunch of other pure-types..

I know there's more pures out there (Abra, Squirtle, Rattatta, Hitmonchan, Pikachu, Vulpix, Goldeen, Digglett, Wheezing, etc). But for my team I'm using only one pure of each type, where possible. That's why I said "My Team" before the list, it wasn't supposed to be an exhaustive collection of all the pures. The question is, does a list of pures for each game actually exist? Where could I find out that info? Do you know?

That's what I was working from in the past. However, I've just found the regional pokedex listings (search "Jdex" on that site), and that's exactly what I need. Thanks anyway!

My other questions still stand, especially #4 - if I were to do this challenge for Gen2 or Gen3, what pokemon would you recommend? I've played Gen2 before but I honestly forget almost all of them, and I remember being underwhelmed at the time. So which puretype Gen2 team do you think would be best for rekindling my love of the generation?

Use a starter, at least. In Johto, they are all monotype.
    (Chikorita/Totodile/Cyndaquil)

Also, depending on version/how long you want to wait:

    Normal: Furret/Rattata
    Water: Poliwag/Psyduck (Same with hypnosis)
    Fire: Vulpix/Growlithe
    Ground: Sandshrew
    Rock: Sudowoodo
    Electric: Mareep
    Poison: Ekans/Koffing/ [Nidorans+Nidorin@ but not King/Queen]

    For an extra challenge:
    Grass: Sunkern
    Psychic: Unown/Wobbuffet

Also, would Eevee be a possibility?
Or would puretype ---> different puretype be considered cheating?
