??? This is news to me. BREAK cards are not banned from Standard last I had checked.

Maybe they were referring to a "broken" card? When a card is considered broken in a trading card game, it means it is utterly dominant to the point where it's pretty much the only thing used in competitive play, meaning it's basically changing the way the game is played. Which means it's "game-breaking", hence where "broken" comes from. This is a concept that exists in all trading card games (MTG, Yu-Gi-Oh!, etc), not just Pokemon, though. There is a card that is considered broken by the concept of broken as it pertains to TCGs, though: Lysandre's Trump Card. That card in particular has been banned for roughly 6 months now and will stay banned for eternity, probably.

But the "BREAK" cards are definitely not banned from Standard.

If they're banned there, it's a house rule that they play by and is not applicable to official events.

Standard format is from XY onwards, so Break cards are perfectly legal.

As donavannj mentioned they may be referring to cards that "break" the game-such cards that haven't been banned but were classed as such are Seismitoad EX, Trevenant XY, Night March (at one point) and now Battle Compressors and VS Seekers are considered as well.

If it is a rule of the local league to ban Break cards I would consider contacting Pokemon about that as not only does it seem silly but can also hinder practice for Nationals/Regionals/Championships. Or the Professor doesn't know what they're on about.
