Question about the Wii

Probably not. Most Wii's are region locked. There was a 'hack' that could unlock your Wii and allow it to play any region games, however that was fixed in a software update. So short answer is no.

No, I believe not. In fact, even if you have a foreign Wii along with a agme from the same place as it, it may not work depending on your TV I believe (?)... basically, no.

One could get a freeloader, depending if you lived in certain countries that allowed it like Australia, which would let you do so, but just recently Nintendo has with the update system put in coding that allows it to delete game save files from games in other regions if one loads the update, so that isn't as viable a solution now. One could go and not take the update, and there's no chose if you don't have WiFi, but you might as well wait for the game in question.

No, unfortunately the Wii is region-locked which means only games from the region you bought your Wii can be played on it. Say you want to play a Japanese Wii game - you'll need a Japanese Wii.

But the DS is not region-locked so I can play a Japanese version of Pokemon Platinum on my American DS.

And I thought the recent system update for the Wii deleted altered save files because people were using them to install homebrew (read: Twilight Hack).

You could've before if your purchased a Datel Freeloader. But, as of yesterday Nintendo has rendered the device useless.

Not sure why the DS is region free and the Wii is not.

nope but why buy a Wii console from another country?
try finding 1 in amazon.com or gamestop/walmart
