At the risk of sounding like a complete n00b, I have a question. Are scripts the endless series of code, or are they what the characters SAY to each other? If it's the former, does that latter have a name for itself?

No risk at all, how else would you know?

I do believe it's what's said by various mobs (characters). However, I also believe that scripting is edited via "the endless series of code," A.K.A. hex editing. There are a few programs that also edit scripting specifically, but from my experience, those aren't that reliable when it comes to changing EVERYTHING said throughout the game you're hacking / editing / playing.

That's the definition of scripting in ROM hacking, yes. However, this is the Game Development forum; definitions here are somewhat different.

If you mean in hacking, it's what Rock Lee said. Otherwise, in Game Dev, scripting is usually used to refer to the code being changed; for example, the RGSS in RPG Maker XP. The editing of events (such as NPCs and items) is appropriately called eventing.
