I've played Gold forever and not once have I encountered a shiny; I may have not noticed one was a shiny but I don't think I have seen one. What are the odds that you'll come across one?

Also, they were purposely put in the game right? Not a glitch? I mean, in the show there are shinys.

Thanks in advance all and apologize if I overlooked similar threads before posting! ^^

The chance of randomly finding a shiny is always 1 in 8192.
Yes, they were added into the second generation and in the newer games as well. Shinies can be found in r/b/y too but you have to transfer them to gold to see the color change.
You should have found a shiny Gyarados in the Lake Of Rage.. If you breed it with another water pokemon, you have a 1 in 60 chance of the offspring becoming shiny. On the summary, a shiny has 3 stars and flashes/sparkles when seen in a battle.

Ah - ok, I remember the red Gyarados! Yeah, I think I'll try breeding him and see what the turn outs are!

    Thanks for the information, TwilightBlade!

lol i remember that i bred it with a ditto and got a gold magikarp then bred my gyarados with marill and got a shiny ahhh the good times...

I wish the shiny chance was higher. I had 3 on my silver game. Didnt know they were that rare. I had a gyrados, bellsprout, and pidgy.

I have somewhere around twenty shinies on my silver version. Thank god for getting a shiny Ditto.

Obviously, you could do the Shiny Ditto trick to get every shiny in Gold/Silver/Crystal, but if you havnt got the coloured games, then this might work.

Ive just worked this out, so sorry if there is any mistakes.

Try this to get as many shinies as possible:

    1. Catch a MALE Red Gyarados at the Lake of Rage.
    2. Breed this with FEMALE versions of every Pokémon in Gyarados' groups:
    Group 10 - Water Dwellers (C)
    Group 13 - Dragons
    3. Make sure each offspring is shiny, and the ones mentioned below are MALE (yes, alot of soft resetting).
    4. Breed selected MALE offspring (below) with FEMALE versions in their corresponding groups:
Group 7 - Forest, Wood, Ground Dwellers - must use Ekans
Group 8 - Water Dwellers (A) - use Horsea, Dratini or Remoraid
Group 11 - Beasts - must use Charmander
    5. Again, make sure each offspring is shiny, and the ones below are MALE.
    6. Breed some MALE offspring (below) with FEMALE versions in their other groups again:
Group 1 - Shrubs, Plants, Weeds - use Bulbasaur or Chikorita
Group 9 - Water Dwellers (B) - use Omanyte, Kabuto or Corsola
Group 12 - Magical - use Pikachu (evolve Pichu), Marill or Snubbull
    7. Yet again, make sure each offspring is shiny, and Paras is MALE.
    8. Breed the Paras MALE offspring with FEMALE versions, again in its other groups:
Group 2 - Beetles & Bugs - must use Paras

As far as I know, only the above groups are breedable this way. Make sure each offspring is shiny, remember.

    These groups are missing:
    Group 3 - Birds & Bats
    Group 4 - Humanlike
    Group 5 - Rocks & Minerals
    Group 6 - Supernatural & Pollution
    Group 14 - Mysterious
And the ones that dont breed, obviously.

Youll have to catch these lot yourself. Unlucky, but remember, try to breed MALE shinies. It makes it easier to breed new shinies.

lol ill be about 500 by the time i do that lol itll take to long its easier just catching shiny ditto and breeding because its then 1/64 chance of the offspring being shiny
