While playing VBA and a few instances through normal use of my computer, recently, I've heard the USB disconnect sound, the ONLY USB interfaces I use 100% of the time is my mouse and my PC fan, my story-storage USB is used quite a bit, but not all the time... The noise is driving me crazy...

Do you leave your secondary storage USB drive plugged in all the time? Use != plugged in, by the way.

If yes, remove it. See if the noise continues.

If you're talking about my USB where I keep my stories, then yes, but, that's only when I use it, if I don't use it, then it's not plugged in, and no, it's happened when the USB isn't plugged in.

In Windows XP and above this sound is not limited to removable hardware such as USB devices. This kernel sound event fires any time that any hardware device is 'disconnected' physically, 'ejected' logically or it's driver unloaded by the OS.

Therefore this means that something is doing one of the above listed things. You should probably reboot and see if the problem reoccurs. If it does; then you can worry. Sometimes Windows does update it's device drivers and this process naturally includes "ejecting" the hardware, unloading the old driver and replacing the driver, then reloading it as the OS operates. This is especially common for non-system critical hardware such as network cards, USB devices, sound cards, and more.

    Hmm...

If that's the case... I think I have a checklist.

    • Go to Device Manager and let Windows scan for hardware changes while connected to the Internet. Let Windows install any and all missing drivers.
    • After that, check for updates within Windows Update, and install everything, including all optional updates. Repeat until there are no more updates listed.
    • Use the computer for a while, paying attention to any unexpected sounds.
    • If the hardware disconnect/connection sound keeps playing anyway, get the computer internals checked by a professional.
