Anyone who says it's impossible to breed for shinies in G/S/C is wrong. -.- In G/S/C shininess is determined by DVs, whereas in the GBA and DS games it's determined by a completely different value that can't be passed on. However, DVs are passed down from both parents to the child, thus increasing the odds of getting a shiny baby if one of the parents is shiny. IIRC the chances of a baby being shiny if one of the parents is shiny is something like 1/68. I don't remember what the exact value was, but it was something between 60 and 80.
 
i think getting a golden magikarp via breeding is just a myth... the way i got a golden magikarp in pokemon gold is to surf in the lake of rage... I admit I was very lucky to have caught it in just under the 50th encounter
i caught a female golden magikarp so it would be interesting to see what colour it has when it evolves and what happens when it is bred with a male red gyarados...
