HeartGold hack: Refined Gold Overhaul [COMPLETE]

I've been informed of and fixed a small but critical bug concerning the Oven and accidentally bricking the Celebi event and consequently the end of the superboss quest. Basically the Oven correctly made itself forget the player had completed it, but still remembered the player had started it, so it wouldn't re-activate.
As such v4.1.2 will be released in a few days after I finish testing and tweaking some other things, and the dev room will be later on.
If this has already happened to you, do not fret as v4.1.2 will allow you to reset it again and successfully get it calibrated to be repeated.

am just before the E4 rn, and I have some random QoL suggestions (mostly problems I have with the original game)... off the top of my head:

- pokemon crystal legacy adds a PC to the house just by tohjo falls so you can switch out your waterfall slave to battle the tough trainers ahead, this would be neat to have rather than battling all those trainers potentially one team member down (there's a similar problem with victory road's strength requirement as the rival fight can be quite tough, but forgettable HMs would go a long way to alleviate the pain here)
- perhaps make the goldenrod game corner prizes obtainable elsewhere before the postgame (I really don't like grinding for coins in voltorb flip) (though I guess Thunderbolt and Flamethrower might be a bit much to just hand out to the player)
- I've been using Hitmontop, and I think maybe lv51 is a bit too late for it to learn close combat considering Heracross learns it at 37
- rock smash grinding for heart scales and shards takes forever so maybe it could be made so that rock smash does nothing a little less often? (though again, like with the game corner tms, you don't want to just hand out this stuff to the player)
- there are a handful of pokemon in the johto dex (e.g. clefairy) that I've never encountered on trainer teams in my playthrough thus far, I think it might be worth making sure at least one trainer has them in their party so the player can see them in the pokédex to check where they're located
- while I get relegating larvitar to victory road, I think part of the deal is that you're supposed to raise the weak larvitar and pupitar to eventually be rewarded with the powerful tyranitar - giving the player a lv47 larvitar diminishes that somewhat imo. it might be better as an (incredibly rare) early encounter much like how crystal legacy handles it (it's in dark cave I think, that hack also does something similar for houndour iirc?)
- ive probably mentioned before but stuff like forgettable HMs (+ not being able to remove them from your inventory to prevent softlocks), being able to use potions repeatedly without being kicked back to the bag menu, and the b2w2 repel reuse dialog would go a long way towards making the game feel more modern and smoother to play
- though I haven't unlocked them yet I think maybe swapping the 5 tm npcs for a single one with a menu (much like the shard tutors) would make things more straightforward
- maybe give the player the exp share a little earlier?
- oh and letting the player see move reminder moves (but not teach) without a heart scale

aaand that's all I can think of for now - I've enjoyed this hack a lot so far, need to lvl up my team for the E4 (at lv50 rn) but am looking forward to play the kanto portion

I mean I can reduce the level of the Larvitar in theory? Not a lot of point to that, even though I could make it 5 levels weaker so it stands out a little. Contrast that with Deino which is in VR at the same level as everything else. Uncertain, but that's actually worth considering for thematics.
I am not using Crystal Legacy as reference for anything, I was here before them and I have my own approach to things.
You can also get shards from doing Pokeathlon and no one is stopping you from using PkHex for shards if you can't stand the grind. I really don't mind!
Game Corner prizes are being treated as non-factors though when they're completely unobtainable that is being considered (ex Zoom Lens from someone in the Global Terminal)
There is a Clefairy on a trainer team it's just one person. There's huge improvements to what is on trainer teams, and I think it's okay that the player doesn't have a fully fleshed out seen dex by default. It rewards wandering and exploration.
Most modernizations I have intentionally skipped. The game is much more fluid but that little bit of grit goes a long way in terms of atmosphere.
Exp. Share I have considered but it's a very awkward item to handle given when and where it's available.

This is the long and short of it.

Hi, one question, is it possible that scripted events for legendaries could be included in a future update instead of npc encounters?

Nope! I like my implementation as is and having "X legendary randomly loitering in Y location" is pretty cheap with the sprites and all.
There are other methods that could be done but I like the way it's handled as is and it feels unique all things considered.

i'm sorry to ask, but is there a list of all the available pre-e4 pokemon?

also i'm confused as to what pokemon are available in this hack
is it just johto dex before e4 and then hoenn/sinnoh poke's become available in kanto? i am confused

What level should you be for the E4 and Lance? I'm doing a run where I'm not using healing items in battle, and playing normally my team was around lv51 leaving victory road. I was able to get through the whole game OK and with some strategizing was able to beat all of the E4, but Lance is just far too powerful and completely wipes my team...

The standard for this kind of thing for nuzlockers is the ace of E4#4, in this case Karen. If you're level 55 you should be fine as you gain some exp through the E4 itself.
E4 is designed to, like normal Pokemon games, require a modest amount of grinding to justify the rematch NPCs existing and to make Clair->Silver->E4 feel a bit more distinct from each other. This gap also makes it so it's very difficult to accidentally overlevel, as that was a concern in some earlier versions. The tradeoff being that now some grinding is required, but I think it's healthier overall this way. I recommend looking up how the rematch system works so you can call one person over and over to farm exp! This is also a good opportunity to look through the tutor moves and do some Pokeathlon to get the shards for optimizing your team.
Best of luck on the E4!

My team's at lv56 now and Lance is an absolute wall - his team still consistently wipes me, even with some strategizing and some incredibly lucky setups. I think he needs less full restores, for one...

for the record, I'm running ampharos, crobat, quagsire, umbreon, hitmontop and scizor. I start with ampharos and use discharge, hoping for the paralysis so gliscor gets switched in, then I magnet rise to avoid earthquake and get in a reflect. then I switch to quag to double ice punch, then yanmega comes out and I switch to crobat to use fly. aerodactyl then comes back out and kills crobat so I can switch back to ampharos + magnet rise/reflect to sweep both it and gyarados.

but that charizard... as I'm not using healing items it's able to spam flamethrower, focus blast and full restores and my team just gets swept... I'm probably complaining about a skill issue on my part and need to grind more lol, but it definitely feels like a huge spike over the rest of the E4

Does Stone Edge Hitmontop not kill?
You could try opening with Tech Metal Claw and Bullet Punch on Scizor, as Aerodactyl's best move is Aerial Ace against it. Then save Ampharos for Charizard, as Discharge or Power Gem should deal a heavy blow. You also have Quagsire's Waterfall as an alternative. I should note that Quagsire's Surf actually does more damage than Ice Punch against Gliscor unless you have really bad Special Attack, Gliscor is just that physically bulky.
The reason Lance switches in Gliscor on Discharge is not because of paralysis but because he sees you are using a move he has a mon immune to, so he switches in as part of Expert AI.

v4.1.2 is out! This has a big changelog but it's really just a lot of little changes, most notably some bugfixes, fine tuning of superboss stuff so it's more intuitive, and fixing a small but major bug with the Celebi event and the oven.
I'm on 4.1.2 and I experience very long load times when entering the fighting dojo, is this a known issue? (I'm on R4)

I'm not noticing anything like that, does this not happen in v4.1.1?
I have my suspicions what could be causing it but I think it's just to do with how the file is set up this will be looked into it alongside general R4 compat after v4.1.3.

+1 to this suggestion.
I'm afraid I'm not doing that, for multiple reasons. The HP drain speed among other things have been improved to make the game less sluggish, and 60 fps would not fix anything about that.

Do you catch Groudon after Rayquaza or am I misunderstanding the documentation? I wasn't entirely sure how the orbs were implemented.

I'm totally new with this hack rom, and I tried to play it through Nintendo Switch (retroarch) and I found out that DS games aren't a good experience on Switch :/
This hack rom sounds amazing, exactly what I was looking for (up to Gen-4, shiny hunting..).
Is there a similar one to gba games?

I'm not sure if I understand what you're asking about but it should run fine on MelonDS on a computer
