I understand I'm not able to ask for a name change until December 23 or later, correct? But would it be OK if I asked if a certain name is taken, so I know ahead of time? That's all I wish to know, and if it's OK, then I want to know if the username "Gale" is taken or not, 'cause it doesn't appear on the member list. I'm assuming it probably does, but I'm unsure.

You could ask, but all you'd really know is if the username isn't take at that particular time, since you can't really claim a name in advance (unless you were to register an account for the sole purpose of claiming that name) and there's no telling if somebody will nab it by the time you're allowed a change.

Fortunately for you, at this particular time that username isn't taken. :D
