[Other] RMXP or ROM Hacking

Not sure if this belongs here, in the Beginner's Forum, instead of just on ROM Hacking Hub, but ofr consistency, I'll just answer you.

I happen to be familar with both ROM Hacking and RMXP. They both have their cons and pros. I'm more of a ROM Hacker, becuase, I found that having multiple tools, that are easily understandle and distinguishable, a little bit more friendly than RMXP, which has its engine and that's it, unless you expound it, using scripts and such, provided in the Game Development Sub-forum.

RMXP is user-friendly, but editing and expanding your pbs. files, can be a bit tedious and boring, since you edit it via Notepad or similar text-editor. But all-around, is so much better, about its mapping, and animations, and battle system. You pretty much have full control, with no limitations holding you back. With that said, I still like ROM Hacking

ROM Hacking is much more appreciated. Also mounds upon mounds of research have been done on it. We can take what is there, and mold it into whatever. The tools to make it, are so much more user-friendly, than RMXP, which demands you KNOW the software, to use it, to its outright potential. Although, you have limitations, it's not too hard to get around. Plus we can add to the engine, with ASM. All-in-all, ROM Hacking is much more suited to me, although, I love both.

Moved this to the Hub because that is where discussion threads go.

I've tried both, this might sound weird but I felt like using essentials was a bit too easy? It sorted out a lot of things for you, but basically just cloned a pokemon game in. It meant I was in the odd position where I wasn't utilising RMXP myself and just relying ENTIRELY on essentials. There seemed to be a lack of documentation on anything else as well, so I felt I was limited.

Meanwhile, RH has a lot o f tutorials to help with understanding as well as the tools. I don't rely on tools for every little thing, so it's a bit more open to me - of course the total outcome is limited by being a ROM hack but I feel what I do change is more important.

Does that even make sense? lmao.

I know what you mean.

I'm my eyes, essentials is way too easy, there's no challenge behind it, and there's certainly nothing much too learn, as long as you know how to click some buttons in RMXP, there's nothing to it.

Where as with ROM hacking, things like scripting, inserting, and indexing requires knowledge to learn. Making it somewhat more of a challenge, and my kind of game.

Since Essentials is easy, it's the kind of thing I'd use for a competition in a short period of time, since it's quick and easym and you can make a decent game in a short afternoon.

This is a bit like one of those format debates in a way.
For me, ROM Hacking is slightly more appreciated than RMXP, however; RMXP is more viable than ROM Hacking.

Why is ROM Hacking more appreciated? Because it takes more time, and more effort.
Things have to be balanced and done correctly, and you are working with the original code to provide a similar or better experience.

Why is RMXP more viable?
Because it is not a ROM. ROMs require emulators, emulators scare people who are new to the emulation scene. For a lot of people, just getting them to run an application that doesn't come pre-loaded with windows is hard enough, so RMXP has a larger audience just from being more accessible.

But, you know. This is essentially an efficiency V accessibility argument. I like Shiny Gold, I like Pokemon Reborn. I love how Shiny Gold is difficult and I get to enjoy playing it pretty much anywhere. I don't like that it has to adhere to the constraints of Fire Red. I love that Pokemon Reborn can have limitless content, and is actually pretty good since the creator likes to abuse the flexibility of RMXP by give it a hellaton of features that several years ago I would never associate with RPG Maker. I hate how the creator likes to abuse the flexibility of RMXP without regard for efficiency.

6 in one hand, half a dozen in another.
