Robots

I thought I would make a thread about the whimsical world of robots.

Have you ever purchased/been serviced by a robot, or do you think you'd be interested in having a robot to help you?

I have an aunt who received a robot-assisted surgerical procedure. A cousin of mine also has talked about majoring in robotics. I know there are robot dogs and other interactive robo toys, self-driving cars you can ride, there's even a hotel in Japan with an all robot staff.

While I was browsing Amazon recently, getting some items for my household I stumbled upon some robot vacuum cleaners. I needed a new vacuum anyway, and many of the robot vacuums are not much more expensive than really good quality regular vacuums, so I think I will buy myself a Shark IQ Robot Vacuum next month, one with a self-cleaning base. I was impressed by how much autonomy it seemed to have when I viewed video footage of it moving fron room to rooom, navigating around objects, emptying itself, and if it works as shown it would make life significantly easier around here. I'm excited for it.

Tell me what you think of robots.

We own an Alexa, so that's my closest experience with a robot.

I was very on edge with it at first. I was wondering what I would do if it started talking on it's own in the middle of the night, which I had heard stories about. Then I realized how silly it was worrying about such a thing. Now it's just a nice device to play music on and set alarms for food.

My whole apartment is powered by Google, except for the doorbell because I need an extra component and my landlord's permission to have security cameras installed, and the Nest thermostat. Most of the stuff like electronics and lights can be turned on/off/scheduled by voice, although that part could use some work sometimes....aaaand it's unreliable when the internet is out.

I've actually worked with a PR firm that partnered with a university's robotics ward and I learned a lot more about building a robot from billions of parts than in high school. Also, my friend owns a 3D printing robot that can build anything with filament. I guess that's close enough.

I went to a huge phone shop in Utrecht, Netherlands and there was a cute little robot that would follow you around with a tablet that displayed the shops website. It was really cute, but pretty basic since it didn't really interact other than approaching and greeting you.

Any other time I've intereacted with a robot was when I was trying to get help on a website and I had to go through the inconvinience of dealing with an FAQ robot that would ask me the same questions I answered on another page before it would pass me onto an actual human.
