This is kind of old news at this point (lol), as I posted in another thread I was surprised there wasn't already a thread/discussion for this! & eventually decided I would draft something since there wasn't!
Romhacking.net or RHDN for short; one of the largest databases for fan-made romhacks on the internet has posted an update about "winding down" and switching to news only. They explain that the database has been backed up and archived but will no longer host the downloads of the various mods, hacks and translations available on the site going forward.
RDHN's scope goes beyond Pokemon, although many romhacks were also hosted there, it was possibly the best source of fan translations projects of many jp exclusive games. If you are within the community, or have had even a passing interest in romhacks and/or translations projects, you likely have had some interaction with this website!
If you visit the site you will see they still post news updates, here's a link to the news update in question with regards to the "winding down" as they put it. This update has actually been bumped down on the homepage to page 2 as it went up on August 1st, this link should display it right at the top tho:
It is a great loss for our community, I'm glad it will continue to function in some capacity in the foreseeable future, but this comes off the back of another large site closure with Relic Castle back in March. I think of PokeCommunity as standing defiantly in the face of these closures, I'm always ecstatic and relieved to see it still standing every time I log in! I imagine we have or will see at least some migration of projects over that can no longer host their games on those sites. Of course many won't migrate. But I would be interested to hear from any fan-game devs who have done so or plan to.
So what are your thoughts on these closures and what they mean for the community? What are your experiences and memories of the site RHDN or even RC if you wanna share that here go ahead. Personally I used both a fair amount over the years, and was sad to see them both go. I hope PC can stay up and continue to provide the space it does for the community, honestly feels needed now more than ever as spaces to share these projects shrink. I know a lot of fandevs share their works to their own communities and spaces now with Discord, Twitter, Patreon and sites like that but I don't think these fulfil the same roles as these hub/database-like communities have for the interest/practice as a whole, rather than for specific works/projects. Same for more general relevant communities on discord/reddit...it's great that they exist (especially now) but I don't think they necessarily fill the gaps that will be left with these types of community sites closing.
/ignore this next part if you're not interested in a separate drama related to RHDN closure/
He does mention some kind of interpersonal site staff drama, with discord staff members, I know there were some twitter threads on the opposing side of this dispute. I didn't want to touch on this too much, but I err on the side of giving NightCrawler the benefit of the doubt in that situation, seeing as he's the one who ran this highly valuable community space for us for decades, at great personal expense. I found it kind of bizarre that a lot of people on social media seemed to be happy to gloss over that and everything he had done for the community, to paint him as some kind of villain in the scenario deserving of full responsibility and harsh scrutiny. I also found it a bit suspicious that many were adamant he wasn't doxxed, however viewing the quotes and replies of those very threads, you could clearly see that toxic social media harassment very present with many wishes of harm and even death...I didn't think it was much of leap to imagine some of these individuals would doxx him, and certainly absurd to claim it wasn't something that *could've* happened. At that point it's a he-said-she-said thing about whether he was or wasn't, with the dissenters accusing him as a liar, but again we have no reason to not take NC at his word and give him the benefit of the doubt . To me personally it actually feels way more likely that he was indeed doxxed, rather than he lied about it, but yeah I ended up typing a lot more than I planned to about this part of that story...I guess it's just sad that that type of drama and cyber-bullying/harassment type behaviour found it's way toward NC. But those are just my genuine and honest takeaways after what I saw regarding this online.
I don't have the links to the twitter threads but feel free to share them here if anyone has them and wants to.
sorry this ended up kinda chunky word-wise, I could've separated out my personal thoughts to post as a reply later, but I wasn't really sure how this thread would do and if it would even get any replies so I just decided to condense all my thoughts here. Despite thinking it is a pertinent news topic for this site and the community I wasn't certain of how much of a discussion would really evolve here. But I hope at least some people can express their thoughts and maybe reminisce here!
