Seasons

It would be interesting, and maybe somewhere in the storyline you could get something to change the seasons, like the Oracle of Seasons maybe?
Something to change the seasons, and in different seasons are different pokemon, a different story line and maybe a gym will only open in one season.
Or if you wanted it to follow the actual RL seasons, then that's possible.
 
That would be one of the most super-ultra-mega-fabulous things to happen ever.
(partially because I thought of it too ^_^ )

It would also help with having a bit more type diversity early on. Seriously, you don't have to get rid of the normal and normal/flying, but that doesn't mean they're the only things you have to have early on. The only game I can think of that really let you have a number of types early on was crystal version.
 
I would prefer either seasons or parts
of a region that stay one season all the
time.
 
If there were seasons, they should change weekly or biweekly. It would be perfect :D

Summer, season of increased strength and permanant Sunny Day

Spring, season of increased speed and on and off rain

Fall, season of increased Special Attack with wind, which would increase Flying-type attacks and Pokémon

And finally Winter, season of increased Defence and SP Defence with snow, which would increase Ice-type attacks and turn Water-type Pokémon to Ice-type

That is, only in outside battles though. There's always a Gym or Stadium nearby ;]

Even though anyone can change the date on their DS at any time (so you could make it any day you'd like, so exclusives wouldn't be a huge problem!).
The DS already has some features (fancy snow in Snowpoint in on the anniversary Pokémon was released for the first time) relating to the date. I love the idea, personally. As you can set where you live the GTC already, you could simply set where you live (thus the season) at the beginning of the game!
Fun advents on international feast days (one for every country? That would be a fun cultural mix!). Perhaps, for example, prizes for getting an Irish Pokémon on St. Patrick's Day (I can't think of another bank holdiay on the spot!).
Overall, it would be a cute thing that makes the game more popular.
