As my first words, I would now like to admit that this idea was stolen from Zelda Universe.

Anyway, I have seen talk of subjects such as homosexuality and such, and I believe it would be best to have a desired place for that type of discussion. A serious discussion section (or whatever you want to call it) could be a place where members can freely talk about religion, sexuality, death, serious life decisions, etc. Now, when I say freely, I don't mean that this could be a place where people can go ranting about something. It should still be heavily moderated. But I think that it should be moderated by someone who is unbiased and is not easily offended.

In short terms, it's perfect for touchy subjects.

And, by the way, just because I' suggesting this does not mean I would like to be a mod in that area. However much I would love to be a mod, I personally believe that, currently, I can't take that type of leadership position, for I would not be able to regularly check up on this site.

    Just an idea. :)

If you check out this thread, it got over 100 replies and then died. :(

Just putting it out there that I'm still all for this.

I still agree with what Penatrait said in the other thread too. Needs organizing.

A serious chat forum would really ease up the clutter, as well as pleasing to the eye, it's worth a trying.

I think it's best to avoid the touchy discussions because people are more easily offended and then they like to flame others as a self defense mechanism. Honestly if you want to discuss about serious issues, an online Pokemon forum is probably not the best place to go. Well that's just my opinion but who knows.

That is a legitimate argument. However, I used to think the same thing on ZU, but it works great over there. And honestly, people are going to be talking about their problems no matter what, so we might as well try it.

To be fair though, touchy subjects have been back in Other Chat since the fall of 2010, and we really haven't had many full on flame fests since then, maybe 2-3 times, and the people behind them were just here to troll. 9 times out of 10 the discussions are calm and thought provoking.

A few individuals are usually to blame, and I don't think it right to punish the whole forum and to hold the section back for the actions of a few immature ones.

I don't want to split up the Other Chat forum in any way. Whether it be sub-forums, or an entirely new forum. Still, I think it would be nice to have a dedicated area for more serious discussion with people who are interested (and ONLY interested) in having, what Live said, thought provoking discussions. A large portion of the threads in Other Chat are just that.

Unfortunately, I think a lot of people (my being one of them) are reminded of things in the past when serious discussions on sensitive topics are brought up. We've had those more than once (T-Dome, Other Chat back in 2008, and probably a few in between those two) where problems just infested the entire forum. It took a while to get back on our feet and pick everything back up and running again. What I'm getting at is the idea of making Other Chat predominately a serious discussion forum, and because of the occurrences in the past, trying it isn't something I'm willing to do.

You can argue that things will be different, but the best way to predict the future is by examining the past, and if it's something that happens repeatedly, it's going to happen again, if given the chance.

There are a lot of things that I hold the thought, "Well, we can always try it, and just revert back if it doesn't work." But for this, we don't have a quick fix if anything goes wrong. Like I said, we redid the rules and everything in Other Chat and it took a while for that to get fixed and for people to get the hang of it. Other Chat is at a really, really good place because of the measures we (the h-staff) took while the forum was moddless, and because we put it in the hands of such a capable and forward thinking, progressive moderator like Live_Wire. I don't think anything is necessary for Other Chat.

At the most, we could add some thread prefixes for more organized discussions and sorting them, but other than that, there isn't anything that I think is appropriate. But, that being said, there are threads in Other Chat that focus on "religion, sexuality, death, serious life decisions, etc." already, so...

So, basically what your saying is that it's too much of a risk? I guess if your stance is based off of past experience, it is reasonable.

It is a fair enough reason. I remember many 'serious' threads that Nick could be referring to and they really didn't end well, rather badly actually. It is a shame though.

Now this I wouldn't mind seeing being tested. I think it would be a nice overview for people browsing the board and also just straight forward.

I think it would need some testing, maybe parcial implementation?

I would like somewhere to discuss something I may of seen in the news but as this is a pokemon forum somewhere with a notice saying if you easy offended better to say out of this area :)

That's... pretty much Other Chat, lightoftruth.

I'm going to close this topic now.
