So if I already own a squirtle, and I run into that as the first pokemon in a new area, it is showing as catchable, and the second encountered pokemon is showing as non-catchable. Is that a bug or am I misunderstanding the clause?

If your first encounter in an area is a pokemon registered as "owned" you can KO or run from that pokemon. The next encounter will be catch-able. Here is an example from a recent stream using v1.24.0.

Please make a bug report on the github if you are experience issues.

    - It's great to have an expanded options menu, but accessing it is confusing. Messing around actually revealed a vanilla functionality I wasn't aware of before: pressing Start enters/exits main menu options (including starting a new game). It would probably work better if "next" was a selectable button like "cancel", instead of messing with select/start. I would also consider renaming the vanilla "cancel" to "finish", since in modern times "cancel" implies the changes will not be kept (this confused me when I first replayed Red/Blue).
    - Unlike other options, the Y shader only takes effect after reset. I'm guessing this is a technical limitation?
    - The shimmer activator is confusing, since it's unclear whether it's on or off (on top of not telling you what it does in-game).
    - I don't think the level requirement for trade evolution stones is necessary. The only one that can acquired unreasonable early is Alakazam, which can be fixed by swapping the required stone with Haunter's.
    - As someone who often plays with random wild/starters, it would be more fun if late-appearing Pokemon learned moves earlier (ala gen 2 tradebacks). Too many are terrible in the early game due to only learning their second move at level 30, meaning even with randomization they never get a change to shine (see poor Grimer).
    - In the casino prize corner, I think walk path of the NPC on the right should be adjusted/removed. Him blocking the counter is quite frustrating.
    - Vanilla progression suggestion: the Water Gun TM should be placed in Pewter City (e.g., the museum) instead of Mt. Moon. That would finally give it utility while still giving a hard time to players who try to solo Brock using Charmander. It would also make a lot more Pokemon viable with randomization.

    - Glitch: NPCs walking from/to the bottom of the screen are rendered in front of the menu, sometimes blocking the "exit" option. This does not happen in vanilla.
    Spoiler:

    - Suggestion: the mandatory Cut bush East of Cerulean should be replaced with a blocker Pokemon similar to the one in Vermillion. That is the only remaining mandatory bush, meaning its replacement would make Cut optional to beat the game. You could give it text alluding to seeking a mate, linking it to the lazy Pokemon in Vermillion.

I am replaying gen 1 with you patch, and I think it is fantastic. Great work!
I have a couple of comments:
    - It is not clear what changes have been made to Seismic toss. I have it on Chansey, but it does not affect to most rivals, e.g. Koffing.
    - When you change from pokemon A to pokemon B during a battle against C, the rival also changes in the following turns from C to D, and you defeat D with B, A receives experience, which is weird.
    - There is no information regarding the rod necessary to catch Squirtle. I have tried for hours in the water that is located in the north exit of Vermillion city (I think there is only one place with water in route 6) without success. I would appreciate any help on this, since it is frustrating.

    - If you consider another languaje, I would be happy to help with the spanish version (that way my kids can play).

This was a bug with regards to static damaging moves. It was fixed in v1.24.1. The current version is 1.24.2. Static damaging moves should only be ineffective against types with immunity. So Night Shade should not affect normal types, and Seismic Toss should not affect ghost types.

    - When you change from pokemon A to pokemon B during a battle against C, the rival also changes in the following turns from C to D, and you defeat D with B, A receives experience, which is weird.

It seems weird because trainer-swaps are so rare in vanilla release pokemon games. Experience is granted based on whether or not a pokemon saw any combat since the last knockout, not based on fighting with a specific enemy. Otherwise you get scenarios where a pokemon pulls its weight, but then gets nothing for its efforts because the opponent switched and you had to counter that with your own switch.

    Squirtle is a grass encounter.

    Not in the cards.

Hello, first off, awesome hack! Really made me enjoy gen1 like never before.
    Some questions:
    1. What does the "a ray shimmer" text mean? Initially only my butterfree has it, but then suddenly my farfetched also got it. At first I thought it was shiny, but then I got a shiny rattata.
    2. What's the shiny odd? If it's full odd (1/8000+), this means it's the first time I got a full odds shiny ever.
    3. Is there a discord to ask questions, or is it just here?

Hello, first off, awesome hack! Really made me enjoy gen1 like never before.
    Glad you're enjoying it.
    1. What does the "a ray shimmer" text mean? Initially only my butterfree has it, but then suddenly my farfetched also got it. At first I thought it was shiny, but then I got a shiny rattata.
The "shimmer" is explained in the Guide to New Player Functions. It started as a sample experiment for adding a transformation-like affect, and it was left in as a cheat feature to buff pokemon that aren't very good in general. The shimmer factor is written to a pokemon's catch rate byte, so it becomes an inherent aspect of the pokemon (shows up as a miracle berry if traded to gen 2).
    2. What's the shiny odd? If it's full odd (1/8000+), this means it's the first time I got a full odds shiny ever.
Shiny status is determined the same way as Gen 2, so the regular odds are 1-in-8192. The shimmer has its own odds that have nothing to do with being shiny, and it is much more common due to the intent of the transformation.
    3. Is there a discord to ask questions, or is it just here?
There is no dedicated discord server, but I am on Discord and lurk in several rom hacking servers. Questions can go here in this thread, or you can make a general post in the Issues tab on the github page.

Where is Ice Beam available once you've used the first one? Seems like I've looked everywhere and can't find it

I finally completed the pokedex. It is very nice to have all the pokemons available. Finding Porygon in the central was much harder than expected, though (it took more time than Mew).
    - After the E4 there is a coin vendor in Celadon city, but I am not able to find it. Can someone help on this?
    - I am wondering if it is very hard to make a tranlation to other languaje. Can you directly translate the corresponding files and compile the project over the US version or am I totally wrong?

I found low encounter rate Pokemon to be persistently frustrating, even with emulator speedup. Unless it's meant to be a super-secret easter egg, I don't think any encounter should be rarer than a 1 in 10 chance. I also don't understand why a quality of life feature like buying bulk coins is locked to the post game. It makes buying copies of the important Thunderbold TM disproportionally frustrating.

I think you mean Porygon in the power plant. It's supposed to be a bit of a secret alternative to getting the 9999 coins required in red version.

See the attachment on this post.

It depends. Translating into something like Greek or Russian requires making all-new tiles for those alphabets, assigning space to them in vram, and then assigning hex designators to all of them. Translating into Italian or German is pretty much going to use the same characters that are already there, so you can get away with editing all of the text and hitting compile.

Can anyone spoil me on how to evolve the trade evos (machamp, gengar, etc)? I get that there's hints, but I'm dumb.

Hey JoJo, I only currently have access to a GBA flashcard, which means just Goomba. I know you recommend not using that one, but what errors have you encountered or had reported using Goomba and can I complete a playthrough using Goomba?

Unpredictable crashes and things glitching out unexpectedly.
