Side Character of the Story

Thrusts you into the main protagonist role in most Pokemon games, particularly the mainline games. What if you controlled someone that was not the most important character in the story? Which character, new or existing, do you think would be a good fit for an interesting game?
___________

One idea: Officer Jenny. Deals with all the evil team grunts causing trouble. Must react quickly to multiple different threats. Combines some driving mechanics with Pokemon battles. Might allow different ride Pokemon, rather than a vehicle. Could be a little goofy. Thinks of something like Crazy Taxi here, but not entirely the same. Might make a raid of the evil team base harder if you mess up the driving portions, perhaps. Supports Ash (or whatever 10-year-old prodigy is there) as they blunder their way through the evil team base.

Another idea: A Pokemon on the protagonist's team. Decides whether or not to obey the trainer's commands. May switch you out if you start doing poorly. (Option: Dodge the Pokeball beam.) Will not be able to handle everything yourself, however. Presumes the bond between you and your trainer to be important here, plus perhaps the rest of the team too.
