    Let's talk about how the anime is similar to the games and why you feel this way. The anime is not completely foreign to its source material, after all!
     
    Well the whole idea of going from town to town to fight the leaders of each gym for badges comes straight from the games. Pokemon have to gain experience and leveling from winning battles or using the correct stone to evolve permanently like in the games also, unlike Digimon where they could evolve basically at will if they have enough energy and it is only temporary.
     
    Probably the biggest thing about the anime in regards to connection with the games is how Ash always went through each of the six main series regions to get all 8 of the badges featured in the games to be eligible to go to the Pokémon League. (Never mind, though that Gary had a lot more badges in Kanto than Ash, most of which weren't even featured in the main Generation I games.) The buck stops with going to the League, though, as the conference format seen in the anime isn't implemented in the main series games.
