Vitamins will always work, but it can get expensive. Good Lord, I guess I need to put together a Happiness FAQ some day.
Okay, for Eevee to evolve into Espeon, it needs 220 Happiness points. The first thing you need to do is go visit the girl in Verdanturf Town (last house, bottom left) and have her look at your Poke. The phrases she tells you as determins how many Happiness points your Poke has. Here they are:
0 - 0 - "This is a little hard for me to say... Your Pokemon simply detests you. Doesn't that make you uncomfortable?" |
1-49 - "Its very wary. It has scary viciousness in its eyes. It doesn't like you much at all" |
50-99 - "Its not very used to you yet. It neither loves nor hates you"
100-149 - "Its getting used to you. It seems to believe in you"
150-199 - "It likes you quite a lot. It seems to want to be babied for a little"
200-249 - "It seems very happy. It obviously likes you a whole lot"
250-255 - "It adores you. It can't possibly love you any more. I even feel happy seeing it"
So, once you are in the 200 range, you know you are close. Feed it a few vitamins and then level it up and it will evolve.
How do you increase it's Happiness level, you ask? Good question! Here are some things you can do:
Walk 256 steps: +1 for all happiness values
Give vitimins: +5 in 0-99, +3 in 100-199, +2 in 200-254
Important battle: +3 in 0-99, +2 in 100-199, +1 in 200-254
Level Up: +5 in 0-99, +3 in 100-199, +2 in 200-254
Pokemon faints: -1 in all happiness values
Energypowder: -5 in 0-199, -10 in 200-249
Heal Powder: -5 in 0-199, -10 in 200-249
Energy Root: -10 in 0-199, -15 in 200-249
Revival Herb: -15 in 0-199, -29 in 200-249
So you can see, those nasty powder crap can really screw up your Happiness, which is good if you want to use Frustration, but why made your Pokemon hate you when you can max its Happiness and use Return instead?
A couple quick hints:
- Give your Poke the Soothe Bell to hold. It will increase the rate of gaining Happiness by 50%.
- Catching a Poke in a Gorgeous Ball and your Poke will earn twice the amount of Happiness points when leveling up, walking, or using them in an important battle.
- Any time you trade a Poke, its Happiness level goes back down to 70. Yes, even a maxed out Snorlax that uses Return. Ouch.
Now, some myths about Happiness that just are not true. The following things have NO affect on Happiness:
- Healing a weak Pokemon
- Giving it an item to hold (Soothe Bell is the exception)
- Putting a Poke in a PC
- Winning regular battles with a Poke
- Letting a Poke's HP reach a critical status
- Walking while your Poke has a status effect
Finally, Espeon evolves from noon to midnight because somehow that was determined "DAY", while Umbreon evolves from midnight to noon, since that was deemed "NIGHT". Crazy.
