Slim PS3 HDD Upgrade Question

Do you really need the new HDD if you say you rarely download digital games?
What kind of HDD do you have now?

One important detail you left out is: how much space is left on the hard drive?

I've filled it up pretty fast, since I do own 60 PS3 games physically/retail: https://www.gamefaqs.com/users/Toddler_Naruto/games/owned?platform=113

I also like to copy movies and shows from my External HDD (it's also a 160 GB) to the PS3 HDD for watching 720p/1080p content on our 32 inch 720p LCD HDTV.

I do that because our computer isn't even capable of watching 720p, it's a Dell Dimension 2350 from 2002 with an Intel P4 2.20 GHz CPU, 256MB RAM, and no real video/graphics card (just a 64 MB onboard driver).

If it's for movies... do you plan to archive those movies on PS3 HDD or watch & delete?

I delete both the movies and tv show episodes after I watch them. However, my problem is that I download more than I can watch.

Another reason why I'm wanting to upgrade, even if it's just another 5400 RPM HDD, is so I can install a fresh PS3 OS.

I can do that with my 160GB, but I'd have to either backup EVERYTHING on it first, or just sacrifice/delete it all...which isn't an option.

I get that... I also do that =D

Well... in my opinion, 1TB would be pointlessly throwing money away...
In your case, 500GB ought to be more than enough.

I found a 1TB 2.5 inch Toshiba 5400 RPM HDD for $60 New on Amazon...while most 500 GBs cost only $50 New.

Do you think I should spend the extra $10 for double the HDD space?

I got myself a 250GB HDD made by uhh, that fancy tech company, Seagate or something. It should work fine. To answer your original question the PS3 can't run faster than 5400RPM, if the hard drive is faster it will be slowed down or possibly not work so I'd recommend you get a 5400 RPM.

Oh, I have a Super Slim which originally had its data on a 12GB flash card. Your 160GB hard drive has the mounting bracket to hold it, right? It should, all you have to do is put the new HDD in. Super Slims did not come with this part, which was annoying.

Yeah that's what I've heard on other forums...I don't mind having to wait longer for the $60 1TB Toshiba though, I'm sure I'll have it 100% filled within a year, if I keep copying my movies and tv show episodes to my PS3.

Yet another reason why I'm avoiding the Super Slims...If I ever need to replace my PS3, I'll probably buy a $200 12GB PS3 (Used - Like New) and a $10 HDD mounting bracket for the 1TB Toshiba.
