Anyone else more interested in this sort of thing than typical social media?

It has a lot of crossover with retro tech like BBS, but also includes newer stuff like the Gemini protocol.

The whole idea is to go back to a simpler way of interacting with others that isn't influenced by algorithms or bloated with malware and other junk.

I've explored a few of these and they tend to be quite cozy. ☺️

Of course, if you want to get your "personal brand" out there or reach as many people as possible it's not the best option, but it's not really intended for that.

I see. I think the cons of these small places is that if there are really few people, they can be not really active. I'm glad to hear you feel well there.

I've never heard of the term "Smolnet" specifically, but I've definitely seen more of a push to spend more time on smaller communities over the past few years. I personally like both small, cozy communities like Melonland and PC as well as more "normal" social media like Reddit. I don't really see it as one or the other, they both have their own strengths and weaknesses that compliment each other.
