So I haven't watched Pokémon for 15 years...

Until today when I watched Genesect and the Legend Awakened on TV today and to be honest I found it... average. Team Rocket were shoehorned in and I found Ash to be just annoying!
Am I missing something here? Or has the animé gone downhill since I last watched it?

Everything (Except the writing; there's only so much you can do on a kids show, before you start getting some retreads) Has been on a upward trajectory from, Animation, fight choreography, music, and directing.

The pokemon anime together with Yokai Watch and Precure (which are both kid shows). Are the most produced anime on TV, using lots of resources and pulling in tons of different talent.

Did the Pokemon Anime went downhill, no.

To be fair, there's plenty of episodes in the first few seasons where Team Rocket is shoehorned in and Ash and other characters are annoying.

Serena has the point that sums it up. The anime has mainly been following a repetitive format, but it appears Sun & Moon has changed things so drastically.
