You might have heard of a new portable that is being developed by Sony to compete with Gameboy Advance, grand champ of Portables, which was revealed at E3 2003. Its presently being developed and will use 1.8 GB CD's (Yes thats right Gegabyte), its similar to Gamecube discs, but are just a tad bit diffrent. It will use 2 processor's, one for sound and the other for 3D graphics. It will also have a already installed LAN, MPEG4 technolgy, and a USB 2.0 port, proberly for PS2 conncetion or maybe even for computers.

So how do you think this new portable will do? Hopefully not as bad as Virtual Boy XD.

I've been discussing this with about 4536372 people on other forums. The overall thoughts are that it'll do well thanks to Sony fanboys, but as far as games go, many third-party developers are already unsure whether to bother with it, and unlike Nintendo, Sony certainly can't rely on their own unpredictible in-house games to sell the machine. It may be capable of 3D, but that's not necessarily what people want.

One crucial company that's in limbo about whether to develop for the machine is Square-Enix. And their decision could make or break Sony's new handheld, methinks.

Hm... and if Square-Enix decided not to produce any games, say goodbye to any possible Final Fantasy you might hope the new portable would have.

The GBA has market dominance and a strong line up of pokemon games. The PSP can't compete.

There will be people that will buy it (and I mite be one of them) but every one knows that the Game Boy rules the hand held game systems. Sega had there own (Neo Geo is what I think it was called) but it never did better then Nintendo's Game Boy line. And like SA said Pokemon games are comming up and Pokemon is only on Nintendo and its not just Pokemon there is other games thats only on Nintendo and I just dont see how the PSP will keep up (unless thay got some kind of new thing that will be a big hit). So I think it will just end up like the Neo Geo, if not right a way then it will when the next Game Boy comes out.

Neo Geo? Ugh.. I thought that was the first Nintendo GameBoy? And plus Sega's handheld was the game gear. I think it was very un-popular. Anyway it looks like a fairly good thing. But for some reason Gameboy is just something you get stuck on playing.. I dud out on sony things real quick. (exept their PC.. thats what I got.. Ironic..)

Now I remember the Sega Game Gear came out first then Sega came out with there next hand held system the Neo Geo. But yes Neo Geo is Sega's and I forgot all about the Game Gear. Both of them all never got far off the ground.

It was actully SNK that came out with Neo-Geo, then Neo-geo Pocket, then finally Neo-Geo colour that would have caught on if it was more popular and had at least some sort of commerializim, Gameboy seems like its here to stay the King/Queen of portables.

Yeah i heard of this thing and i would never think that sony would make one hmm it should be interesting Cuz Sony has a tendency to go wild it may be a Great Hand held system ya never know

The PSP sounds like something that can end the reign of Nintendo's great Game Boy:P. But with all that power packed in what Sony calls a "portable system" I find it hard to believe it could run on a rechargable battery... efficiently:\.
But all I saw was a various concept pictures and some made up stats... I find it too early to tell if this new portable is enough to even compete with the GBA, but with Nokia's bombed N-Gage I'm starting to have second thoughts, lol.

Haha.. Well lets see if Sony can surprise us.

Mmm hmm. Exactly. If I remember correctly, Final Fantasy VII was the game that virtually saved the PSOne from darting into a downward spiral of, err...no sales. Since then, the release of a new FF game has been such a major event that Sony probably relies on Square-Enix to sell a good portion of their consoles thanks to the Final Fantasy brand alone.

Although I've now heard that Squenix are onboard, and planning to port several games from their back-catalogue onto the PSP. Seeing as most pre-32bit FF's have had a re-release already, my guess is that we're set to see portable FFVII, VIII and IX. Which would indeed, sell the machine like hot cakes.

So there. I'll continue to support the GBA no matter what I do. One thing I do hope though, is that the PSP isn't an unreliable, shoddy piece of machinery like Sony's other two consoles. Hmm.

Meh, with all those features I think it is safe ot say batteries won't last long in there....*remembers his Game Gear he has that consumes 6 batteries in about an hour and a half of game play*.......*shudders*....

And also the durability thing that was brought up... I doubt that Sony could ever make a portable system as durable as a Game Boy. Game Boys can be frozen, thawed, frozen, and thawed again and still be playable with the game inside intact. They can even be flushed down toilets and still work (I forgot who did this, it was either Gamepro, EGM, or G4. I forgot -_-)

Also since it is portable, with discs, if you are riding in the car or something, won't it skip or randomly freeze? I doubt those forward scan things would work, because it is so much data to scan, and information on game discs aren't always in order of the events happening.

If they do manage to make it and make it function somewhat, and if it doesn't cost more than an X-Box I may get it. Speaking of prices, since the discs are extremely similar to GC disc's, games for it will probably cost $50 so GBA will be better in that department...

I don't think the PSP will even come close to compete with the Game Boy.
The batteries proabally won't last long. Plus Sony will be using a CD. This makes Sony to put a fan in to cool down the CD or the game will be overheated. So while you play the game you'll hear the fan spinning.

Oh yes the N-Gage, that new portable which I think will do just horribly after a while, the cell phone feature is nice and all, but its just a bit akward when using it.

And Gba/GBC/GB are all very durible, they are virtually indestructable, but I just hope that this PSP will be the same, but with all the technology with it, when you drop it a few times it might effect the gameplay.

They should make a handheld GameCube since it uses a small game disk... o.o

That would be so nice if they did, but there are thrd party accsorires where you came bring your gamecube on the road with a small screen and a power source.
