Hey, I'm a contestant in the National Spelling Bee (Speller 156). If you are in the bee, please send me a friend request. I want to find my fellow spellers.

Doubt your gonna find anyone here, out of all these members ;P

But, Congratz for being a contestant in the competition. You must have a wide vocabulary.

I hate spelling bees. I've entered it every year, placing third in my school comp... so I couldn't move on... :/ I'm determined to win one passed my school and district... one day.

The poster doesn't state their age, so that can't be determined, really. For example, if you were 9, and in a national spelling bee, that wouldn't be as good as being in one at 18 or so. Simply because children generally don't know as many words as those older than them.

Anyway, the fact that the poster didn't even state their location makes the thread pointless unless we're discussing our participation in spelling bees.

But, in general, I haven't participated in a spelling bee because my primary school didn't have one nearby that I knew of. By high school, spelling wasn't even in the curriculum.

I LOVE spelling bees. :D Mainly because I can spell words, have a lot of confidence, was runner up and winner in some regional Spellin Bees and even a 10th place at the State Spelling bee, which is one of the biggest spellin bee comps here. XD

I also love the prize of a spellchecker. XD

I was always good at spelling, I participated in as many spelling competitions as they allowed me to back in my school. I never went past the school in the spelling bees, however. Not that I actually studied, I just relied mostly on what I knew.

I never understood spelling bees. I believe you should punish bad spelling rather than reward good spelling. People should use correct spelling regardless of reward, simply because if they don't then they'll look silly and and when they go into the real world their job applications will be rejected.

I think rewarding good spelling is like congratulating somebody for flushing the toilet.

Well...I'm more of stick-type than a carrot-type, when it comes to that sort of thing.

I also despise competitive situations, where people have to put their heart and soul into something only to be turned away at the final hurdle. It's demoralising for young children.

    Well each to their own!

Best of luck to you, I hope you are the winner!

Ah, spelling bees. I remember competing for a title in my elemantry school, and I was pretty good. I lost though, when I made a really stupid mistake. Spelled 'honest' O-N-E-S-T. :' (

Anyway's, wow! Congratulation on getting in! Are you gonna be on T.V? I'd love to root you on. I doubt you'll find someone here that got in, even with PC's high member count, but hey, you never know. =)

    Wow, congrats! =D
    I'm not in a spelling bee...we don't have em here. ;_;
Am I the only one who checked his post for spelling errors? XD

Oh, it says all of this stuff on the Spelling bee site. Go to spellingbee.com, go to Bee '10, and then click the link that says Meet the 2010 spellers, and you will find me when you click 156.

    Congratulations. That's a great achievement.

I remember I made it to my state spelling bee in 1st grade, I think another 2, but not sure. Amazingly, I got 4th, missing bicycle. B-I-C-Y-C-L-E, easiest word to spell for me now.

I like to think of myself as a good speller. I did win a spelling bee back in fifth grade, lol It never really progressed past the school-wide level though, so I don't know how I would have done district-wide or anything like that. And once in middle school, the school spelling bees seemed to stop for whatever reason.

Pretty much this. I placed fourth in the regional Spelling Bee back in the day, and I hope you do well at the National level! :D

I competed last year for the high school spelling bee and I was placed as the second placer. :]

    I didn't even read the dictionary. x.x
