I see the comments raging at me for saying this, but I've done my research. Charizard was good back in the day, but now things are a little different. Stealth Rock was invented, making Charizard's life difficult. However, it is absolutely impossible for Blastoise to learn this move. So, if he can't learn stealth rock, than what about him makes him so special? Well, this is the deal. The Special Charizard in X & Y has the ability drought, making solarbeam easy to perform (and still, it has to be taught via TM,) however Blastoise has a new ability: Mega Cannon (Or something like that.) This powers up the moves like Water Pulse or Dark Pulse. Already having same-type-attack-bonus, Super-effectiveness, and now this new ability, Blastoise has an even EASIER time taking the Fire-Breathing Dragon to its knees. Let us also not forget, if you do research, or do process of elimination, You'll know that Blastoise can learn the TM Stone Edge. This move has 15PP, maybe 20, has a base power of 75, is Quad-effective, and can cause the target to flinch. I'm sorry Gen 1ers, but Charizard is no longer the ideal choice. HOWEVER, what about the last one, Venasaur. (I might have mispelled that,) What does Blastoise have against him? Well, unless you do this right, Venasaur can still do good damage on Blastoise. However, if you use a TM Gyro Ball, that is super effective on Him (even though due to the weight issue it wont cause much damage.) If you have a heart scale, you can have Blastoise learn FLASH CANNON. Flash Cannon is a Steel-Type move, with 80 base power. Unfortunately, these are as good as it gets, unless you're playing other previous games where move tutors can tech him Iron Tail (there might be one in X & Y.) SO, if you have trouble picking which Original Starter to pick, Squirtle is the Ideal starter. If you don't mind taking up 2 slots for Flash Cannon and Rock Slide, you sir, can demolish anything. ONE MORE THING. If you're worried about Electric-Types. Don't. Because Blastoise can learn (I'm not kidding,) Earthquake by TM. So if you get this TM, you're set for all of Blastoise's weaknesses, and he can DEMOLISH CHarizard. Thank me later.

Not sure where you're getting your facts, but Stone edge has 100 base power, but with the drawbacks of 80% accuracy and only a pp of 5 (max 8) For these reasons I prefer moves with a higher accuracy, although a high crit possibility is always nice.

Mega-Charizard will be able to come in as a revenge killer high a choice and sun boosted overheat to do some serious damage to unsuspected pokemon.

I'm not sure what you're truly trying to get at, as most players will simply choose who their favorite is, or who they want to use for the hell of it, and not the "best" choice.

I'm a bit too tired to read a wall of text, but one thing I can say is that the great thing about the competitive aspect of the games is that there are a multitude of movesets with such limited use that it doesn't really matter who is the best, but the synergy they provide to both themselves and the team.

Blastoise can learn the TM Stone Edge? Ahem! That low Physical Attack base stat won't do any help for Blastoise. Who would make Blastoise learn Stone Edge (if it can), he couldn't even learn Work Up to boost his Attack stat prior Gen V! Stone Edge has 100 BP and not 100 accuracy... More importantly Blastoise cannot learn Stone Edge!

Why are you letting your Blastoise learn Steel moves, when he doesn't have that much benefits from it... :(

Mind you Charizard can learn Solarbeam + Sunny Day(it will make Water-moves weaker, while Fire moves stronger).

Your logic is flawed by the idea that steel is super effective on poison, because it really isn't.

If you wanted your Blastoise to defeat Venusaur you would teach it ice moves, simple. Charizard will still have the upper hand (in your situation) as Drought will cancel out any additional power on 'Water Pulse' - and the move only has 60 Power so wouldn't 1HKO a full health Charizard. Rather than using Water Pulse you'd just use Hydro Pump or something with more damage.

They are balanced, to some extent. All would easily defeat one other starter, and although they'd be at a disadvantage with the other you can set up the battle to regain some form of advantage.

I mean, it'd give you an advantage over all the people choosing Charmander, I guess...

There is already a thread regarding the Kanto Starters in Pokémon X & Y Here. Feel free to voice your opinions or discuss anything related to the topic there.
