Standard / OU Metagame Guide

Font? Oh, I'm bad with those, lol. The font is okay-looking, but I like Tahoma so I'll try that. Too bad I already sent the update :( I'll just PM it to him again, lol.

Also, I'll show ya the descriptions...I'm not going to take out the coding, but it's easy enouggh to read past...and if it isn't, just ignore this.

Is at least every OU pokemon mentioned somewhere in the movesets at least once? If not, that'd be a good option to do, just to show WHY those pokemon are OU.

Couple typoes here and there, but nothing major. It'll really get the less-experienced players into a feeling of "Hey, I can do this now." Also, under "Synergy" of constructing a team, make an example of teamwork, such as Blissey, Forry, and Cresselia. (Those 3...wow)

The best example of teamwork is Snorlax and Spiritomb (and yes, Blissey won't work in Snorlax's place). they wall every special attacker in the game except NP Togekiss, who only electrics can counter well. In other words, Tomb/Lax is on every stall team I make. End. They're THAT good. They're the two MVPs of my stall team by far, so yeah >.<

Also, I left out some OUs on Smogon's tier list because nobody uses them anymore (throwing them down to the BL tier) and they aren't that great...Scizor for example is in this position.

I'll probably be adding a lot more sets though. I'll probably add in Scizor too >.>

Oh, I'll also mention alternative sets with pokemon like weavile, but I doubt I'll post them. I linked to Smogon a bigillion times, so somebody should be able to figure out how to find info on all the pokemon :P

But uh...yeah. thanks much for the suggestions guys. I'll just keep annoying Ooka with updates until it's finished.

EDIT: I always keep leaving stuff out. Yuck.

Tomorrow is a big Homework day for me, but on Tuesday I should be able to do a lot of work on this. Don't expect many updates until then though :P See? Anti DOES have a life!

Okay, after skimming through the guide, I have some comments about it.

  • Basically not just the 47 OU pokemon from Smogon were added, I noticed there were some BLs added. For making a general threat list, I feel only the 47 OU pokemon and the top of the Borderline should be added. For example, Rampardos can't do much without Agility passes, and many of the BL pokemon dropped out of OU after being found out to be unviable in the metagame.
  • Combos

  1. SkarmBliss has almost no relevance in the current metagame, Skarm being neutered by its neutrality to Fighting and Close Combat, and Bliss as a whole decimated by mixed sweepers. The combo that should be listed is SkarmCressBliss.
  2. There are a lot of viable defensive combinations in the metagame, Celebi + Heatran for a start. Rather than listing SkarmBliss in the original walkthrough, I would suggest it be removed as it is not really a viable and long-lasting strategy.

  • Team Building is too vague. The steps that you use mainly apply to normal teams, not TR or weather. I suggest you add in the common misconceptions about weather teams, mainly immunity to said weather being mandatory and all pokemon should be able to utilise it well
  • Adding on for TR, most teams usually pack a fast revenge-killer after Trick Room.
  • Articuno is mostly unviable on a Hail team due to the commonness of SR. No mention of Stallrein or Haxlass =(
Metalkid is inaccurate (by a few %s), I found a much better web-based calculator:
https://ownpurpose.com/damage_calculator_test.php

It'll indeed help me alot, with some fixes.
And Aquillae is right - it's off.
Any chance for ubers and UU and NU guides in the future? (I know Smogon has an article on Uber battling, but an UU and NU guide would be nice. I can't find a list of NU Pokemon anywhere.)

Alright, so just keep it to upper BL and OU? Seems simple enough to me. Thanks ;)

While I agree with all of that, people do use it. It isn't spammed like it was in Advance, but it's still worthy of note since it still picks up a decent amount of use.
  2. There are a lot of viable defensive combinations in the metagame, Celebi + Heatran for a start. Rather than listing SkarmBliss in the original walkthrough, I would suggest it be removed as it is not really a viable and long-lasting strategy.

I sure would make note of SkarmBliss's lack of real viability in the metagame, but again, due to its usage I think it should be noted. I've used most of those defensive combos, so if it's something you think I should add in, I could do it pretty easily.

  • Team Building is too vague. The steps that you use mainly apply to normal teams, not TR or weather. I suggest you add in the common misconceptions about weather teams, mainly immunity to said weather being mandatory and all pokemon should be able to utilise it well

    K. I'll make note of that.

I would disagree there, but again I'm quite biased towards Articuno. Keeping it away from the rocks is quite the chore, but it can be done and Articuno is a really good wall.

Metalkid is inaccurate (by a few %s), I found a much better web-based calculator:

Alright, I'll try it out.

Thanks :) That's quite helpful :)

Luckily I got most of my HW done during History today, so I can probably have an update by tonight or earlier in the morning.

Appreciate the feedback guys :)

A quick note: It's generally hard for me to talk about some of these team types since I really only run stall teams and occasionally a balanced one. If anybody has anything to add about any team type, I'd like to hear about it since my knowledge of teams like TR...is not so hot.

...And when I said "I'll take note of that," it means I'll probably add it to the guide ;)

EDIT: Me making a guide on another metagame outside of OUs would be like Darth Sidious selling skin care products...as in I'm terrible at the other metagames, don't trust me!

May I ask what "MVP's" are? I've been wondering that for a long time, as I heard the word before on Youtube, but never really figured out what it stood for. Anyway, thanks for the guide, I'll point out the spelling mistakes.

Huippowdon
Should be "Hippowdon".

Should be "ChuckleShuckle".

The first non-Pokemon word I've pointed out. Lol. Should be "And".

Should be "Pokemon".

combonation
Should be "Combination".

combonation
Read above.

combonation
Again, read above twice.

difficuly
Should be "Difficult".

Should be "General".

I might have missed a few, but that's probably because I skimmed the whole article.

you don't know what MVP means? Most Valuable Player ._.

Corrected.

I'd rather lay off of the spelling corrections until the guide is finished since the stuff you might be correcting might be deleted/edited later anyways. I did correct them though.

First, HOLY CARP THE LAYOUT. The colors burn my eyes. Subdue the colors a bit- using darker colors (or at least colors that don't clash as much) would help immensely. And don't use Times New Roman- it just looks tacky, and makes the entire guide look like it was made in Microsoft Word.

But, I understand that you're not really in charge of the layout, and even if you were, it wouldn't be at the top of the priority list. So I guess you can ignore what I just said. :P

As for the guide itself, it's good, but it definitely needs some work. It definitely needs to be a bit more newbie friendly- if I were a newbie, I'd find the guide more than a bit confusing. The guide just seems to introduce too many high-level concepts without teaching the basics, or at least explaining the concepts themselves. For example,

Tyranitar is extremely powerful. Be sure you can deal with its incredibly powerful STAB moves. Bulky grounds are usually a good choice to stop it.

What is it that makes Tyranitar powerful? Why should I use those moves over other moves? Why do Bulky Grounds do well against it, and what exactly is a bulky ground? Things like this appear throughout the guide.

I guess what I'm saying is that this guide currently addresses the who and what of battling- but not the how and why.

That said, this is an excellent start, and I'm hoping you can revise this enough so that it actually can become a resource for new players. Good luck. ;)

AC just basically said everything I wanted to say. Please, please, if you can, at least change the colors on the nav menu on the left. The red/orange combo doesn't work. They yellow/black of the main article text works, and the light blue of the title is slightly obnoxious.

So much hate for the colors? :( As for Times New Roman, I wish I knew HOW to change it, but I don't, lol. And just so you know, you have to type these up on Notepad :P

Yeah, and like I said, the Dictionary part is quite incomplete. I'll get more stuff explained and whatnot. I plan to make more than after minor changes before the next update is posted. It probably isn't so newbie-friendly yet, so I'm working to fix that.

Thanks for the help guys ^_^

Oh, and about the color scheme, it's generally tough to do since people prefer different colors. I actually asked people at my school about it to get the most popular results...and of course my classmates never cease to amaze me, lol. I'll change it to a blank white for now.

If anybody knows how to change the font, go ahead and tell me ;)

EDIT: The update I'm about to PM to Ooka will have the color scheme gone. Look at the physical sweeper moveset section, as there are examples of how I plan to revise the rest of the moveset descriptions. the others haven't been revised yet.

I also updated the dictionary a bit. Any suggestions for new terms would be appreciated.

hey! your supposed to put CB blissey set on there!
Great guide anyway for people who still try and use ubers in OU
and are you using HTML if so the font tag is <font size=""> <font color=""> -----><font="newtimesroman">

A much needed revamp on the Threat List is in order. Below is such a list:

Abomasnow
Azelf
Azumarill
Blissey
Breloom
Bronzong
Celebi
Cresselia
Dragonite
Dugtrio
Dusknoir
Electivire
Gallade
Garchomp
Gengar
Gliscor
Gyarados
Heatran
Heracross
Hippowdon
Infernape
Jirachi
Kingdra
Lucario
Machamp
Magnezone
Mamoswine
Marowak
Medicham
Metagross
Mismagius
Ninjask
Raikou
Salamence
Scizor
Skarmory
Snorlax
Spiritomb
Starmie
Suicune
Swampert
Tentacruel
Togekiss
Tyranitar
Weavile
Yanmega
Zapdos

The exclusion of certain Pokemon may either be 1.) that their presence on a threat list is unecessary, meaning they're not a threat to commonly built OU teams or 2.) they are outclassed by something else that plays a similar role, only better.

Also, some useful resourses that EVERY battler (novice and veteran alike) should have bookmarked for future referance:

EVing Applet

Speed Tier List

Defense Tiers

Defense Applet

plus the one's that you've already included should be sufficient enough.

Oh and the best way to get the most accurate damage calculations done...do it by hand.

In some cases, the vagueness of the guide is killing me :/

I generalize a lot of things, so it's only by nature in my writing :P Go ahead and fire away suggestions, sicne I have a feeling that's where most of the corrections will be made ;)

Also, I don't believe the update has been posted (or at least when I checked earlier), so we'll have to wait for that. I'll add those 4 links to the references section. Thanks!

BTW, your exclusion of Forretress and Donphan on your list makes me cry :( Hippowdon is a better wall than Donphan, but it can Rapid Spin and doesn't set into play SS (which can work for or against you).

Also, I generally distrust damage calculators...it pained me to put Metalkiid's and even the other one on there. They always seem to screw up, lol.

Hmmm, if you are learning HTML, then why not make your own Damage Calculator and put it up? Just a suggestion.
