Couldn't find a thread on it...and if I did, wouldn't wanna revive it but...

So this question has been bugging me for 7 years as I grew up, but as I was re-watching First Season of Pokemon, I remember at the end of the first episode (Pokemon: I chose you) That mysterious, golden, bird pokemon flew by and ash asked himself, "What pokemon is that..."

Well I wanna ask the same question but I probably already answered it myself. Just wanted to make sure its the right pokemon.

What is that pokemon that flew by and ash saw? Is it Ho-oh or no?

It is Ho-oh. Ho-oh is the first second generation Pokémon to appear in the anime, and it was only the very first episode of the anime.

Why is it they showed such a legendary pokemon? I mean like in the movie with Lacario and the mysterious mew, what if it WAS Mew in disguise as Ho-oh?

Then again, main point of the question is why would they show Ho-oh in season 1 when everyone had the idea of only 151 Pokemon existing?

I would just think it was to keep people wondering what it was and when its going to re-appear? Kept people watching I guess. I know I wanted to find out what it was.

I was frantically looking through my Pokedex book when I first got into Pokemon looking for it and getting annoyed when I couldn't find it, oh those were the days.

Now I just think how stupid Ash is for mistaking Ho-oh for that picture of Articuno in the Pokemon Centre. =P

    Woop! 300 posts =D

Probably open to future possbilities. Maybe someday Ash will actually meet Ho-oh close-up.

I would love to see Ash gets up close and personal with Ho-oH!

By the way, I just realized, ya know... If there's a new generation of pkmn, there will be a movie that introduces them. Like for instance, 'The Power of One'.., where they introduced Lugia before they'll go to Johto, and then in Johto, they introduced Latios and Latias.., and then in Hoenn, they introduced Lucario for the upcoming Sinnoh Region.

And who knows.., another movie that'll introduce the 5th generation of pkmns before a series of 5th gen pkmns will apear in front of our tv screens. :D

Conclusion, Ho-oH came out to let people that the series won't end in Kanto only. ;)

I think it was just a teaser, as G/S programming was already underway. The first games were released 96, and the anime was 97, so makes sense Nintendo would let a little slip out.

And Ash's musing on Articuno isn't stupid, as he went with the information he had at the time (misleading glyph). Okies?

Yeah true, sorry for speaking... =(

You can see similarities between them I guess, so my bad.

I always used to think it was Moltres. A lot of people thought it was a Fearow...

Oh, so the Pokemon Centre thing was Ash's mistake then? I always used to wonder why Ho-oh was there when the other 2 legendary birds were there.

Yup, they probably just wanted to tease all the players with "Oh, here's a Pokemon you can't get your hands on yet! Ha-ha!!"

It was definitely Ho-oh. It even came back again just before Hoenn/Sinnoh to do the exact same sort of thing.

what i think is strange is that when Ash was telling Prof.Oak about it he showed him a picture of an Articuno, well i suppose the pic did look kinda like Ho-oh, and yeh most likey to get us excited that there where more pokemon than nintendo let on at the time, and then Togepi hatched a bit later on proving that there would be more pokemon
