I didn't know either! Unless there's more to it, it's just a Pokemon that is slightly coloured differently than what's normal. I still am unsure why they are so special but I want them too! lol

They are completely normal Pokemon, apart from the sparkle and the colour change. Any Pokemon you meet has a tiny chance of being shiny. The only thing that's special about them is how awesome some look (Black Charizard!) and how stupidly rare they are. I caught a shiny Nidoran and Zubat in the same weekend in like 2000, and have never seen another one since.

Is it hard to spot a shiny unless you know what colour that Pokemon is SUPPOSED to be? I hardly know what any of these new pokes look like..

Some of the colour changes are very subtle (Shiny Pikachu is a different yellow), some are pretty hard to miss (Red Magikarp vs Gold Magikarp).

But you would never miss a shiny. There is an animated sparkle and a noise every time they go out to battle. There's also a sparkle somewhere on the status bar.

Oh wow, thanks! I hope I can spot and catch one now!

You have a 1 in over 8,000 chance of encountering one... I have only EVER seen a shiny oddish in Sapphire, and I killed it. All my other shinies are form frineds.

shinies are normal, same stats, same iv's, same moves, same abilites, same natures, they just look differenet, and the odds of seeing one are 1:8192... good luck.. they are denoted by a flash of fire when the appear on 3rd gen, same on 2nd, and i have not seen one on 4th gen

This would belong into the main D/P forum but it's easily answered in FAQ, especially in post #4. The only difference is their color.
