In the second quote, Jessie and James have just "stolen" Misty's Togepi and they are offering it to Giovanni, who yells at them for bringing him such a useless pokemon.
The real mystery is: Has Giovanni ever asked for Ash's Pikachu? I mean, why would he want that "yellow rat", while he's busy hunting Mewtwo? I would just pitty Jessie and James, if on episode 99999999(...) they finally caught Pikachu and bring it to Giovanni, just to find out that their boss never wanted it.
NOTE: Both quotes are US translation... curious...

Why would Giovanni, the ring-leader of the syndicate Team Rocket, be rewarding ten-year olds who just beat him in a Pokémon match. I still how wonder how he becomes a Gym Leader…

Pretty much...Mewtwo blew up the gym. Giovanni and Team Rocket abandoned it then- can you just imagine Giovanni trying to explain that to the League? 'Oh I'm sorry one of my Pokemon blew the whole thing up" wouldn't work, they would want to know just what it was that blew it up...which would be bad for Team Rocket. So the Pokemon League just rebuilt the Gym(possibly assuming Giovanni to be dead). Agatha is just there as a place holder.
...although that theory is possible too.

Anyway,

IF Giovanni wants Pikachu so bad, I wonder why he doesn't just go get it himself. After all, I think its obvious after 500+ episodes that Jessie and James can't do it, and neither can Butch and Cassidy...so why doesn't he go do it himself? And especially with his Ground Pokemon(if he uses them in the anime), you'd think he could do it in a few seconds.

I think Jessie James & Meowth see Pikachu as really strong and take for granted that Giovanni will just take any strong Pokemon. *shrugs*

Giovanni never asked for it. The endless pursuit keeps dim-witted members who he can't really "fire" out of his hair while he messes with radio waves, stalks TMA, and whatever TR does in this gen.

But jokes aside, there have been some cases where the team rocket trio have sabotaged other team rocket doings, or at least interfered, for their own interest. If anything they think that by capturing that Pikachu, they can get back on the bosses' good side.

I doubt though, the show would further develop those 3 characters to an extent that what they realize what they are doing is futile. (at least a costume change is needed though).

The first line is defiantly dub-only. It's from a dub-only song, so it's not even translation. 4Kids just made it up themselves. The second is possibly dub-only as well, since Team Rocket's lines get changed around all the time for no real reason.

So, it's completely possible that Giovanni has never actually asked for Pikachu, and (I'm a bit more unsure of this since I can't remember the early episodes very well) Team Rocket have never actually told him they were after a Pikachu. But I can't remember that, and I know TR talked to Giovanni in the early episodes from time to time.

He just doesn't want the trio around. I remember one episode they found out they weren't on Team Rocket anymore, then re-trained with some old woman and got put onto Team Rocket again. Quite liked that episode.

Reminds me of these anime moments, where Meowth fantasises Giovanni getting a rare pokemon from the trio, using it for some strange casual purpose and finally saying :"Those three made a good job, I should give them a rise"

Lol, at the end of the anime, Jessie, James, and Meowth would be like: "We spent 100+ episodes traveling & using up energy, spent countless times working off debts for Pikachu-catching machines, got Thunderbolted so much we're practically friends with electricity, blasted off so many times that the sky is now illuminated with stars (the ones that twinkle when they blast off), redid our motto and puns so many times we tortured viewers, and used up money for technology rather than food, ALL for catching Pikachu, and now YOU DON'T WANT IT?!?!?!" They'd go berserk and use Beat Up on Giovanni before his Persian could even move, while Meowth Fury Swipes Giovanni's face. Then they quit Team Rocket and scramble like heck outta there...

Or Team Rocket just says "Whatever" or "There goes another broken glass..." ;)

But in any case, Giovanni could've been informed about Ash's Pikachu behind the scenes anyway due to its abnormal power. He's so lazy, though... If that little electric rat can topple Legendary Pokemon without evolving (or holding a Light Ball for Sp. Atk enhancement) and bypass type immunities (AIM FOR THE HORN FTW!), who wouldn't want Ash's Pikachu? :t025:

Hopefully, it'll never belong to Team Rocket, though...seeing 'em blast off so many times is classic!

I'd really like to see what would happen if Giovanni learned that Team Rocket passed up Zapdos :t145: for a Staravia in Sinnoh? XD He should fire 'em already; what's stopping him? Is he required to employ them? Maybe by...Madame Boss???

Supposed that Jessie's mom was a good friend of Madame Boss - Giovanni's mom - Giovanni could feel sorry for firing Jessie. By the way, it is entirely possible that Madame Boss is still alive in her 60s or 70s, weird that she has never been mentioned in almost 600 oficial episodes. As for James, Giovanni may still need him on TR, because his family is rich.
