Sun and Moon Needing an Update?

With two new Ultra Beasts and three new formes of pre-existing Pokemon, Sun and Moon may need an update to accommodate these new additions to the series for compatibility with USUM. What are your thoughts on this idea?

We know Game Freak did nothing for XY when ORAS brought us new Megas and Primals, so will they bother doing SM players any favors?

I got to agree with Oblox on this one, I think they're just going treat Su/Mo as the outdated game and just encourage people to buy USM for all the new additional features.
Plus Gamefreak usually prefers to not insert new game data into already complete games due to a history of having game breaking issues from doing so.

I too doubt they will. Though it would be another change if they did update Sun and Moon.

Well, they didn't do that for XY when ORAS came out (IIRC) which is why you couldn't use new ORAS exclusive content when battling/trading with those in XY.

However, I believe they should return that compatibility between games (as I believe it was present in Gen V and Gen IV) to give those who can only afford one game or the other a chance at getting different mons.

By not making the games compatible essentially you are sort of excluding SM players from the 'fun', which although it is good for money, it also is a dick move.

I agree- from a business standpoint, there is no way they would update SM. However, I disagree that it is a dick move. We bought SM expecting SM content. We haven't done anything to earn or deserve extra content.

  • I agree with all of the above. I don't think they have even updated previous games for compatibility. It would make any sense to undercut their new product, they don't want people to hesitate purchasing in USUM to keep up with the series.

  • I feel they're going to go down the "no OR/AS Megas for X/Y" route and say US/UM will be flat-out unable to interact with S/M. So basically, people will be forced to buy US/UM since that's what Game Freak seems to want.

I really don't see a problem with GF making exclusive content for USM that is excluded from Su/Mo. They do this all the time, it's not like they suddenly started doing this only with these games as pryce10 mentioned. If anything it's a pattern that we as pokemon fans should have memorized by now.

If this business tactic really bothers you guys this much, then remember it now and in the future always remember that when a new generation comes out there will be either a third game or a sequel game with more features. Don't buy the first game, save your money and wait till the third game or sequel comes out with the bonus features, that way by the end of it you'll have bought the game with all the bonus features without having to spend money on two games with the first one lacking in content.

Plus nobody is forcing anybody to buy USM. In fact to be honest, I was planning to skip USM. I actually promised myself that if USM didn't have amazing post game features, I was just going to skip it and wait for more news about Pokemon Switch (IMO, I think USM is already being overshadowed by Pokemon Switch, so I might just hold out for that.). I'm a patient dude with a tight bank account, so why pay for a game I've more or less already played?

That's true. Though some people might've been thrown off by the lack of a third version and/or sequels during Gen VI.

I'll be buying Ultra Moon to make it more different of an experience for myself (bought Sun last year) :3.

If memory serves me right, a battle between DP and Pt involving Origin Giratina will still commence, only lacking the appropriate sprites.

Which is what I'm getting at. The least they could do is patch SM so that the new formes and species at the very least exist while they remain exclusively obtainable in USUM, simply for the purposes of trading and battling. Otherwise, SM players will be completely ineligible to compete in VG tournaments, and would need to buy USUM just to compete.

    But business is business.

I disagree. Pokemon as a competitive format is just like any other game that has a competitive format. If you want to be able to compete in VGC's you have to follow the game's constantly rotating format. Most competitive card games do this as well, in order to compete on a professional level you need to be willing to spend the money to do so. People who compete in professional card game tournaments spend hundreds to thousands of dollars in order to create a deck that is format legal for the purpose of just participating in the competitive format, which includes having to remove cards that have shifted out of the current competitive format. This is the price to be payed to participate in a tournament and possibly winning valuable prizes that may even provide money as a prize.

Pokemon is only asking you to spend $60 to keep up with their competitive format, and spending that $60 is not only going to allow you to keep up with their competitive format but it's also going to purchase you an entirely new game which you can play for months on your own in addition to being eligible for competitive tournaments. When it comes to participating in a competitive format, that's honestly an amazing deal (I used to play Magic the Gathering competitively and trust me, I used to spend way more money on that game then I ever did on Pokemon.).

If you want to play pokemon for playing in tournaments, spend the $60 and get USM, it's not that steep of a price when compared to almost any other competitive format. Game Freak doesn't owe anything to people who choose not to follow their format, especially when following their format can result in winning prizes. The people who want to actually compete and win, will buy the next game without any further questions, because they're competitive players and they live for playing to win.

If I remember correctly, the ruling for Giratina back in the day between Platinum and Diamond/Perl, is they would force the Griseous Orb to be unequipped from Giratina and revert Giratina to its altered form whenever you were in a trade or battle with Diamond and Pearl.
