This was my entry for the 2010 PokéCommunity Get Together Small Writing Contest. The prompt was "Challenge" and I thought, Why not do a Contest battle? So I did and this is what comes out. Feel free to give feedback on my writing style or PM me suggestions. Thanks!
Bug Me, and You're Bound to Get Wet!
Weeks of practice and tough opponents have brought two best friends to the final round of the Contest Double Battle held in Platina City. Alana from Azalea Town is facing off against Oliver from Cerulean City. They had challenged each other to a Pokémon battle before, but they had no idea that their challenge would be held at a Contest. Marian is standing on the edge of the battle arena, face aglow with excitement and anticipation. Alana is standing on Marian's right wearing an ice blue blouse, a dark blue amulet and a black, knee-length skirt with white high-heeled shoes. She has dirty blond hair worn into a pair of pigtails. Oliver, on Marian's left, is wearing an indigo-colored polo shirt tucked in a pair of black pants that taper down to his black and white boots. He has short, spiky hair. Marian starts to speak.
"Ladies and gentlemen, this is the moment you have all been waiting for," she announces. "This is the final round for the Platina City Contest Ribbon. On my right, Alana! On my left, it's Oliver! Both people have four ribbons, so whoever wins this battle will be the first to enter the Grand Festival. Are you two ready?"
Both people nod their heads with determined eyes and heart aflutter with nervousness. In the stands are their mentors; Gym Leaders Bugsy and Misty.
"Begin!" Marian shouts. The contest clock starts to tick away.
"Let's do this and win our 5th ribbon!" she says as she throws her Net Balls into the air. "I need your help! Come out, Beautifly and Butterfree!"
The Ball Capsules open with silver and red colored rose petals cascading down on the floor. Beautifly and Butterfree appear beside each other, ready to battle.
"Not if I win this Contest first!" Oliver shouts back. "I'll show you the true power of Water-types!" He throws his PokéBalls into the air. "Poliwhirl and Staryu, let's party!" The Ball Capsules open, revealing a cube full of confetti. The box opens and the confetti falls out, revealing a battle ready Poliwhirl and Staryu.
"Staryu, let's begin by using Bubblebeam! Poliwhirl, Whirlpool!" is Oliver's first command to his Pokémon. While Poliwhirl generates a large whirlpool, Staryu spins like a fan, releasing bubbles which swirl around and through the whirlpool. Poliwhirl proceeds to throw the Whirlpool at the Butterfly duo.
"And Oliver starts with a stunning Whirlpool and Bubblebeam combination," say Marian. "Just look at the bubbles contrasting against the water!"
Alana loses points due to the display, but she does not look concerned in the least bit.
"Butterfree, use Whirlwind!" she commands. Butterfree flaps its wings, sending an intense gust in the opposite direction of the Whirlpool/Bubblebeam combination. The Whirlpool breaks into a mist, but the bubbles are being carried along with the wind towards Staryu and Poliwhirl. The bubbles make contact with the Pokémon, knocking them back slightly. The Water Pokémon are then lifted into the air. They struggle as they try to find ground.
"Alana counteracts with a Whirlwind that not only cancelled the attack, but it also sent some of that attack back in style!" Marian exclaims as Oliver's points decrease. Alana smiles, running her hand through her hair.
"So, Ollie, what are you going to do now?" she asks him.
"This!" he responds. "Staryu, use Rapid Spin!" Staryu rotates itself in the opposite direction of the Whirlwind, breaking the intense wind. Poliwhirl starts to fall, but then holds on to Staryu as it floats down gently to the ground. Both Pokémon are ready to fight as they take the offensive stance.
"Another cancellation of attacks! How many more can there be?" Marian asks out of curiosity. Alana's points decrease even more.
"Now," says Oliver. "Poliwhirl, use Aqua Jet!" Poliwhirl envelops itself in water and jumps toward the Bug Pokémon. Alana, however, does not seem to be too concerned about this.
"Beautifly! Use Silver Wind!" she commands her Pokémon. Beautifly flaps its wings sending a wind containing powdery scales toward Poliwhirl. Oliver smiles.
"Staryu! Get in front of Poliwhirl and defend it using your Rapid Spin!" Oliver says. Staryu leaps in the air and gets in front of the Aqua Jet-covered Poliwhirl and starts to spin around. The scales in the Silver Wind make contact with Staryu. However, they are broken up by Staryu's fast spinning, resulting in sparkles.
"Not only does Staryu's Rapid Spin make a great shield, but it can also stop attacks in a flashy way!" Marian says as a portion of Alana's points disappear. Staryu gets out of the way as Poliwhirl's Aqua Jet collides with Beautifly. Beautifly is taken out of the sky, but Butterfree uses its Whirlwind to safely land it onto the ground.
"Beautifly has taken quite a hit, but Butterfree has managed to let it safely fall to the ground! How heroic!" Marian exclaims to the crowd. Alana's points take a dip while Oliver's points decrease by a little.
Three minutes on the clock remain. Oliver now has slightly more points than Alana. Alana grits her teeth, frustrated that she is not able to land a fully successful attack. She then has an idea.
"Beautifly, use Steel Wing and Butterfree, use Sleep Powder on Beautifly's wings!" she commands her Pokemon. Beautifly's wings glow white and become hard as steel while Butterfree cascades a powdery white substance from its wings onto the wings of its partner. Beautifly then heads for Oliver's Pokémon at full force with its wings glowing brighter than before.
"What a brilliant move!" says Marian as Oliver's points decrease. "Will Oliver be able to dodge this attack?"
"You know I will!" Oliver responds. "Staryu, stop that attack with Swift and Poliwhirl, you help with Bubblebeam!" Staryu generates multiple stars that head for Beautifly while Poliwhirl sends bubbles the same way.
"You know what to do, Beautifly!" Alana says. Beautifly starts to dodge in and out of the stars and the bubbles, showing graceful movement and excellent aerial maneuvers.
"And Beautifly shows that it is the master of aerial stunts!" Marian proclaims as Oliver's points decrease. However, Oliver is smiling.
"You might think you might still attack me, but you got something else to be worried about," he says. "Poliwhirl, use Ice Punch!" Poliwhirl clenches its fist and an icy aura surrounds it. The fist is covered in ice and Poliwhirl swings its arm. Beautifly is hit directly with the attack and one of its wings is frozen solid. It hits the ground, unable to fly.
"Poliwhirl's Ice Punch was well timed. One more second and it would have been hit!" says Marian while Alana's points go down.
Alana has her hand on her chin, thinking about what to do next. She then snaps her fingers as another idea comes to light.
"Butterfree!" she says. "Break of Beautifly's ice by using your Sonic Boom!" Butterfree flaps its wings once sending a wave of sonic energy towards the wing. Oliver, however, has another agenda.
"Take out that Sonic Boom with your Water Gun, Staryu!" he says. Staryu squirts water from its top appendage and it makes contact with the Sonic Boom. The Sonic Boom isn't destroyed, but it is diverted away from the target, hitting the ground instead.
"I think it's about time that we let Beautifly have a little nap, don't you think?" Oliver says to his Poliwhirl. "Let's use Hypnosis!" Poliwhirl's spiral on its stomach starts to spin around and around. Beautifly is helpless; all it can do is watch helplessly as it is lulled to sleep. Misty is watching Oliver with great pride, rejoicing in the fact that her Ice Punch/Hypnosis combination worked.
"What a display! That was an awesome combination move that didn't require two Pokémon!" Marian announces. Alana's points take another dip. Alana is clenching her fists and her teeth while she tries to quickly strategize a battle plan with only her Butterfree. Bugsy is in the stands, looking concerned at the battle that is going on.
Ninety seconds remain on the clock. Oliver is excited that this battle is almost over. However, he is startled by a high pitched noise and he covers his ears. He looks over to his Poliwhirl and Staryu and he finds that they cannot take the noise either. Alana looks around for the noise, but she finds that the source of the noise is from her Butterfree. She jumps in joy.
"Yes! Butterfree has learned Screech!" she says out of elation. Butterfree looks at Alana and then it looks back at Beautifly, who looks back at Butterfree with a look of determination in its eyes. Oliver is taken aback with this sudden change of events.
"And Butterfree learns a new move, Screech! And it wakes up Beautifly!" Marian says as Oliver's points slightly decrease.
"Yeah, yeah," says Oliver. "So your Butterfree knows Screech. It is not going to change the fact that I'm still going to win this battle! Poliwhirl, use Ice Punch and hold it up in the air! Staryu, use Bubblebeam!" Poliwhirl's fist turns to ice while Staryu shoots multiple bubbles at it. The bubbles make contact with the fist and turn into ice bubbles which make its way to Butterfree. Alana now has a grin on her face.
"That was a spectacular combination move!" Marian says as Alana's points slightly decrease.
"Alright, Butterfree!" Alana exclaims. "Let's show off that new move and rescue Beautifly! Screech!" Butterfree glides toward Beautifly while emitting a high pitched noise. The noise rips the bubbles apart and keeps Poliwhirl and Staryu at bay.
"This rescue mission is almost over!" she continues. "Sonic Boom, Butterfree!" Butterfree sends a wave of sonic energy toward Beautifly's frozen wing. It makes contact, the ice shatters and Beautifly is flying next to its partner.
"Mission accomplished!" Alana says with her fist in the air and a huge grin across her face.
"What a daring rescue!" Marian announces as Oliver's points decrease. Bugsy takes a deep breath, relieved that this battle isn't over yet.
"Now that I've got both my Pokémon back, it's time to wrap this up!" Alana declares.
"Not if I wrap this up first!" Oliver retorts. "Staryu, use Swift and Poliwhirl, use Whirlpool!" Both Pokémon start their attack.
"Butterfree! Use Screech, quickly!" Butterfree screams again, this time interrupting both Water Pokémon's attacks. They cannot take the noise. Butterfree stops the attack. However, Beautifly is nowhere to be found. Everyone looks around, but to no avail. Alana has a devious smile on her face.
"Beautifly, use Steel Wing!" Oliver hears a noise, and then all of a sudden, he sees Beautifly swoop in from the skies with its wings aglow. It makes successful contact with Staryu, knocking it in the air.
"What a clean hit! Alana uses a distraction to get close to Oliver's Pokémon!" Marian says. Oliver's points decrease some more. He grits his teeth as he sees that thirty seconds remain on the clock.
I'm losing points like mad, he thinks.
"Poliwhirl, Ice Punch!" He says. Poliwhirl starts to run toward the Butterfly duo with its freezing fist.
"Why are you rushing things?" Alana sneers. "Butterfree, use Sleep Powder!" Butterfree cascades a white powder on the ground.
"Now, Beautifly, Silver Wind!" Alana continues. Beautifly sends a windstorm with powdery scales. The wind picks up the Sleep Powder. Not only does Poliwhirl get hit with the scales, it's also hit with the Sleep Powder. It falls asleep.
"What a beautiful combination move!" Marian says. "I have never seen an offensive move executed like that before!"
Oliver's points decrease significantly. He is beyond frustration and is starting to panic.
"Staryu, use Bubblebeam!" is his outcry. Staryu spins, sending bubbles everywhere.
"Beautifly, use Quick Attack!" Beautifly speeds toward Staryu, dodging the bubbles inside and out. Oliver loses more points due to Beautifly's grace and style. The Quick Attack makes contact with Staryu, knocking in on the ground, the red gem in the middle of its body blinking.
The timer ticks. Three…two…one…zero.
"Time's up!" Marian shouts. "Let's see who will win the Platina City Contest Ribbon today. Everyone looks up to the big screen to find that Oliver has a tenth of his points left, while Alana has ¼ of her points left.
"And the winner is Alana!" Marian announces. Alana spins around in joy, happy that she has won her fifth ribbon.
"Thank you so much Beautifly and Butterfree!" she exclaims. "I couldn't have done this without you!" Both Pokémon fly around in happiness.
Oliver runs to his knocked out Staryu and his sleeping Poliwhirl.
"It's okay," he comfortingly says. "I overreacted and panicked when I wasn't supposed to. You deserve a good rest!" He returns his Pokémon back into their PokéBalls.
A few minutes later and the awards ceremony begins. Alana is standing on the block with Beautifly and Butterfree flying behind her. Mr. Contesta stands in front of her with ribbon in hand.
"We have come to the awards ceremony where our head judge Mr. Contesta will present the Platina City Ribbon to the winner, Alana!" Marian announces.
"It is my esteemed honor to present this ribbon to Alana as proof of winning this Contest," Mr. Contesta proclaims. "You and your Pokémon are destined for greatness!"
"Your Butterfly duo is remarkable!" says Mr. Sukizo.
"I loved the teamwork between your Beautifly and Butterfree," Nurse Joy says. "I'm definitely looking forward to another great Contest battle like the one I just witnessed!"
Alana takes the ribbon from Mr. Contesta.
"I do believe that this is your 5th ribbon, right?" asks Mr. Contesta.
"Yes, this is my fifth," Alana replies.
"So that means we will see you at the Grand Festival. I would love to see your style again!"
The audience cheers for Alana as she raises her ribbon in the air.
"And so we draw the curtain on another enthralling Pokémon Contest," says Marian. "So until the next time we meet, be safe and have fun!"
Moments later, a discouraged Oliver walks out of the stadium doors with Misty beside him. They see Alana and Bugsy sitting on a park bench looking at the Contest Ribbon. Alana looks up and sees Oliver in a sad state. She motions for him to come over. Oliver smiles weakly and walks over to where she is.
"Come on, cheer up!" Alana says to him. "I do have a feeling that I'm going to see you in the Grand Festival."
"Yeah, but what use is it?" Oliver responds back, looking away. "I lost in a humiliating way."
"What do you mean?"
"I panicked, and my Pokémon paid the price for it."
"But that's the thing," Bugsy says. "In a Pokémon battle, whether it's a friendly battle, a Gym battle, or a Contest battle, you always have to stay calm and collected."
"Bugsy's right," Misty adds. "You become easy to read when you panic, and this is what happened here. You need to focus more."
"Exactly," Alana says. "You were so wrapped up in almost winning the Contest that you failed to come up with a backup plan when I came back. You remember, when my Butterfree learned Screech."
Oliver hears these words from his best friend and their mentors. His face twists into a smile and he is laughing. Everyone else laughs along with him.
"You know," he says. "All of you are exactly right! I should've worked more on my focus. I can't believe myself! Well, I'm no longer going to be careless! I will see you at the Grand Festival, Alana. Misty, I do believe I do have some more training to do."
"You're right with that," Misty responds. "Let's go."
"Until we meet again, Alana! Good-bye!"
"I'll be seeing you later, Ollie!" exclaims Alana.
Bugsy and Alana wave good-bye to Oliver as he leaves for Cerulean City to train some more with Misty. They know in their hearts that he will meet them at the Grand Festival as they venture back to Azalea Town. Now, Alana has to come up with a crowd-pleasing style that will captivate the world as it will be her time to truly shine.

"Poliwhirl, Ice Punch!" He says. Poliwhirl starts to run toward the Butterfly duo with its freezing fist.
"Why are you rushing things?" Alana sneers. "Butterfree, use Sleep Powder!" Butterfree cascades a white powder on the ground.
"Now, Beautifly, Silver Wind!" Alana continues. Beautifly sends a windstorm with powdery scales. The wind picks up the Sleep Powder. Not only does Poliwhirl get hit with the scales, it's also hit with the Sleep Powder. It falls asleep.
"What a beautiful combination move!" Marian says. "I have never seen an offensive move executed like that before!"
Oliver's points decrease significantly. He is beyond frustration and is starting to panic.
"Staryu, use Bubblebeam!" is his outcry. Staryu spins, sending bubbles everywhere.
"Beautifly, use Quick Attack!" Beautifly speeds toward Staryu, dodging the bubbles inside and out. Oliver loses more points due to Beautifly's grace and style. The Quick Attack makes contact with Staryu, knocking in on the ground, the red gem in the middle of its body blinking.
The timer ticks. Three…two…one…zero.
"Time's up!" Marian shouts. "Let's see who will win the Platina City Contest Ribbon today. Everyone looks up to the big screen to find that Oliver has a tenth of his points left, while Alana has ¼ of her points left.
"And the winner is Alana!" Marian announces. Alana spins around in joy, happy that she has won her fifth ribbon.
"Thank you so much Beautifly and Butterfree!" she exclaims. "I couldn't have done this without you!" Both Pokémon fly around in happiness.
Oliver runs to his knocked out Staryu and his sleeping Poliwhirl.
"It's okay," he comfortingly says. "I overreacted and panicked when I wasn't supposed to. You deserve a good rest!" He returns his Pokémon back into their PokéBalls.
A few minutes later and the awards ceremony begins. Alana is standing on the block with Beautifly and Butterfree flying behind her. Mr. Contesta stands in front of her with ribbon in hand.
"We have come to the awards ceremony where our head judge Mr. Contesta will present the Platina City Ribbon to the winner, Alana!" Marian announces.
"It is my esteemed honor to present this ribbon to Alana as proof of winning this Contest," Mr. Contesta proclaims. "You and your Pokémon are destined for greatness!"
"Your Butterfly duo is remarkable!" says Mr. Sukizo.
"I loved the teamwork between your Beautifly and Butterfree," Nurse Joy says. "I'm definitely looking forward to another great Contest battle like the one I just witnessed!"
Alana takes the ribbon from Mr. Contesta.
"I do believe that this is your 5th ribbon, right?" asks Mr. Contesta.
"Yes, this is my fifth," Alana replies.
"So that means we will see you at the Grand Festival. I would love to see your style again!"
The audience cheers for Alana as she raises her ribbon in the air.
"And so we draw the curtain on another enthralling Pokémon Contest," says Marian. "So until the next time we meet, be safe and have fun!"
Moments later, a discouraged Oliver walks out of the stadium doors with Misty beside him. They see Alana and Bugsy sitting on a park bench looking at the Contest Ribbon. Alana looks up and sees Oliver in a sad state. She motions for him to come over. Oliver smiles weakly and walks over to where she is.
"Come on, cheer up!" Alana says to him. "I do have a feeling that I'm going to see you in the Grand Festival."
"Yeah, but what use is it?" Oliver responds back, looking away. "I lost in a humiliating way."
"What do you mean?"
"I panicked, and my Pokémon paid the price for it."
"But that's the thing," Bugsy says. "In a Pokémon battle, whether it's a friendly battle, a Gym battle, or a Contest battle, you always have to stay calm and collected."
"Bugsy's right," Misty adds. "You become easy to read when you panic, and this is what happened here. You need to focus more."
"Exactly," Alana says. "You were so wrapped up in almost winning the Contest that you failed to come up with a backup plan when I came back. You remember, when my Butterfree learned Screech."
Oliver hears these words from his best friend and their mentors. His face twists into a smile and he is laughing. Everyone else laughs along with him.
"You know," he says. "All of you are exactly right! I should've worked more on my focus. I can't believe myself! Well, I'm no longer going to be careless! I will see you at the Grand Festival, Alana. Misty, I do believe I do have some more training to do."
"You're right with that," Misty responds. "Let's go."
"Until we meet again, Alana! Good-bye!"
"I'll be seeing you later, Ollie!" exclaims Alana.
Bugsy and Alana wave good-bye to Oliver as he leaves for Cerulean City to train some more with Misty. They know in their hearts that he will meet them at the Grand Festival as they venture back to Azalea Town. Now, Alana has to come up with a crowd-pleasing style that will captivate the world as it will be her time to truly shine.
