Tattoos...taboo to some, loved by others. I've heard numerous accounts from either side as to why tattoos should or shouldn't be deemed acceptable in the world and the subject honestly fascinates me. To put it simply, I've grown in a household that is just as torn about the issue as others have been; my mother - a strict Catholic - is completely against the idea of ruining the body with tattoos, while my father actually just got his first one earlier this year at the age of 52. I've had this kind of discussion with both of them from time to time, and it's always very interesting to hear what they have to say about the matter.

I guess the main reason why I've become fascinated about the subject of tattoos is because of my girlfriend. She currently has three tattoos - shoulder, hip, and thigh respectively - and I actually got to sit down with her and watch her get one earlier in the summer. While many people like to get tattoos because they represent some signifying moment in their lives, my girlfriend just gets them for the fun of it. She believes that there shouldn't have to be an important message behind a tattoo in order to get one, which I personally agree with. Tattoos are an art, and as such the body can be used as a canvas for it, no matter the reasoning. Furthermore, on top of that reason, we have also been watching a lot of the Spike television show "Ink Master" as of late, which has really opened my eyes to the skill and prowess needed in this medium/profession.

With today's generation, more and more people are getting tattoos. According to research done by the Pew Research Center in 2013, 36% of adults between the ages of 18 and 25 have one tattoo and 40% of adults between the age of 26 and 40 have at least one tattoo in America. Furthermore, the total amount of people in America that have at least one tattoo has gone up from 6% in 1936 to the stat posted above; while this may seem like a gradual shift over a large span, a change has been going on and it should be questioned whether or not this is a good or bad thing.

In today's workforce, especially with specific professions, tattoos are shunned upon and are deemed unacceptable to be openly displayed. As a result, many people with tattoos are forced to cover up their tattoos in order to gain the trust of their clients. I'm curious as to whether or not our generation and the generations that follow ill have a more lax stance on tattoos. Either way, I plan on getting my first tattoo in March - of Calvin and Hobbes no less - and I couldn't be happier. That being said, what is your stance on tattoos? Are your pro or con about the matter? Do you have any tattoos? Do you plan on getting any? Comment below as I'd love to hear and discuss with you what you have to say about this topic!
