Often times when discussion of pokemon and trainers arises, inevitablely we peg a certain type of pokemon on a said character. This has always seem subjective to me that a certain trainer/character has a certain type, unless they specialize in a specific type of pokemon like Misty with Water types. So it this just fandom pairing of pokemon to trainers or is there any truth to this? Is there a certain type of pokemon for Ash? If so then what would you see that being for Unova? Pikachu and starters aside and of course the regional bird. I know when Iris was revealed to having a Doryuzu people were saying that is not her type that is so not her. Probably because they thought she was only Dragon, or could it be something else like people have the perception of what type of a pokemon she should have? Does appearance of the character also play a role in this? Because when I first saw Brock I couldn't picture him having a Happiny/Chansey.

I know some people get annoyed when characters like Brock (Rock type specialist) or Misty (Water gym leader) catch pokémon they don't specialise in, but I like it, it shows some variety and it's cool to see them with different types.

Ash catches similar teams in every region, but they're pretty diversified. Though a normal/flying-type is always there. I think Ashy-boy is the kind that catches unevolved pokémon - with the exception of Pidgeotto -, mainly grass/fire/water ones. Or, as I had mentioned, normal/flying-types. With some bugs in there too.

Ash usually catches pokémon that are common in the region he is currently traveling in - I mean, he's not exactly picky... A pokémon passes by, he's all for catching it.

But I think that when you say the pokémon a character uses is fitting, it depends more on the character's attitude than on his/her looks. You wouldn't expect Paul to walk around with a Luvdisc, would you?

Dent and Iris specialize in Grass and Dragon Pokemon respectively, yet they have Pokemon of different types as well (the Bug/Rock Ishizumai for Dent and the Ground/Steel Doryuzu for Iris). While I'd like to see them with the types they actually specialize in, it's not bad to see them with Pokemon outside their specialty.

I always thought Brock fitted better for Grass types than for Rock types. Seeing as plants grow while he is a pokémon breeder, and grass pokés can have fruits and stuff he can use in his food cooking :3
