The 87th Academy Awards

Full list of winners here.

To be honest, I didn't watch this year's awards as there was no real draw for me. Good, great films, but no interest on my end. That being said, when I heard who had won what, I was satisfied. Julianne Moore finally got the Academy Award she's deserved for so long and J.K Simmons deserved his award just as much. Birdman did well as expected, though I would have preferred Michael Keaton to win over Eddie Redmayne.

But what do you think of the results? Do you have any thoughts on the Sean Penn fiasco & Patricia Arquette's comments?

When it comes to the winner of Visual Effects, I feel Interstellar did not deserve to win. I feel that either Captain America The Winter Soldier, Guardians of the Galaxy, or X-Men Days of Future Past deserved to win. The odds of a Marvel movie winning was 60%, while Interstellar had 20% odds. Due to Interstellar winning, it annoyed me to the point that I will never watch it. Course for Best Original Song, I was disappointed that Everything is Awesome did not win. Course I was glad that Big Hero 6 won Best Animated Feature.

as someone who saw all of these except X-Men, Interstellar deserved it, easy. kinda silly to say that it didn't deserve to win if you haven't seen it, right? (;

anyway, I watched most of them and they were pretty entertaining, as always. glad Birdman got best picture and I loved Patricia Arquette's speech.

oh shit, never mind, when I was watching her speech I guess I missed something because now going back and reading what she said it's really... smug, kind of. good intentions, but executed poorly.

I was kinda hoping for Boyhood but I'm still happy about Birdman, and Alejandro Inarritu's speech was great. (And Sean Penn's joke was crap. That's all I have to say about that.)

Patricia Arquette's speech was good, although it had its issues; I missed the "we have fought for everybody else's equal rights" line when I saw it yesterday, but rewatching it today I realize that it could have been better executed. I get that she's calling for solidarity among marginalized people but the "you owe us" implication there is just kind of... eh.

I was also really moved by Graham Moore, Julianne Moore, and John Legend's speeches, and that performance of Glory was just wow. Very moving. Overall, I thought it was a great show.

I'm glad Simmon's got award, though, I was pulling for Whiplash to win movie of the year. That would've been great.
Good job The Grand Budapest Hotel, I knew it was gonna haul.
As for Alejandro Iñarritu, I respect a fellow Latino garnering such honor. Props!

As for Sean Penn:
CNN said:
In the press room, Iñarritu said of Penn's joke, "I found it hilarious. Sean and I have that kind of brutal (relationship) where only true friendship can survive."
I see no further discussion of that.

The Grand Budapest Hotel looked very pretty, whoever filmed that shit... Damn. and I absolute adore me some Eddie Redmayne, he's such a doll, just pleasant to watch, the Theory of Everything was slow, but very nice. I dunno ya'll, I didn't like American Sniper much. ;/
Big Hero 6 is super cute too. Marvel never had a chance, especially with that shit X-men likes to crap lately. Let's all just cross our fingers for that Deadpool movie and hope for the best.

The movies I like never win, I just like the red carpet. I'm trash. I like the pretty clothes. Bleh.

A lot of stuff that I liked.

  • The entirety of the Best Original Score portion, from Lady Gaga's performance segueing to Julie Andrews to Julie Andrews totally KILLING it with the pronunciations of The Grand Budapest Hotel and Alexandre Desplat to Alexandre Desplat actually winning for said film (finally!)
  • The Grand Budapest Hotel winning Best Makeup, Best Original Score, Best Production Design and Best Costume Design.
  • Birdman's Emmanuel Lubezki for Best Cinematography and Whiplash's Tom Cross for Best Film Editing.
  • Common and John Legend's music performance and their Best Song victory.
  • The graphic and set design for the show. Incredibly eye-catching.
  • Graham Moore, Eddie Redmayne, Common & John Legend, and Pawel Pawlikowski's speeches.
  • David Oyelowo's suit. He rockin' that red tux like nobody's business.

Also it's great that every one of the Best Picture nominees got recognized in one way or another.

Ditto to all of this - especially the freaky-ass Sound of Music nonsense that had no right to be anywhere near this but became something that transcended this tacky and stuffy circle-jerk - but with the added surprise win for Big Hero 6 in a category that most awards watchers had assumed Dreamworks had bought from, it would seem, the entirety of LA. And the performance of 'Everything Is Awesome' (as you can tell from my signature)! And Patricia Arquette's speech, which started off as all my worst fears (sad little crumpled up piece of paper) before going full on Norma Rae, and gifting the world with this amazing piece of television reaction shots:

For such a boring and staid ceremony, there was a lot to like, so I'm happy, all things considered!
