Treecko/Grovyle/Sceptile are not only the best starters, they're the best pokemon to ever come into existance. And that's a fact. ;)

Typhlosion: he's cute, strong and is a fire type.
Otherwise I would choose the Mudkip family. Swampert is awesome with his Water/Ground type. =3
Or Torchic's family. I really like Fire types. x3

In my opinion, the best starters in order are Mudkip/Chimchar, Treecko, Bulbasaur/Totodile/Turtwig, Squirtle/Piplup/Torchic/Charmander, Cyndaquil/Chikorita. Sadly one of my favorite Grass types just happens to be not-so-great in battle. Aromatherapy is a nice addition to Meganium's movepool, but its movepool still isn't too great. Cyndaquil suffers from the same problem. =\

As for which ones I like the most, they'd be (in order, obviously):

Chimchar <3
Bulbasaur
Totodile
Turtwig
Mudkip
Squirtle
Cyndaquil
Charmander
Chikorita
Piplup
Torchic

but only the top 3 are definite. I like all starters excluding Torchic so yeah... =P I'm not a big fan of Piplup, either, but Empoleon looks awesome so I don't dislike it either.

For me, no doubt it's Charizard. It can learn much attacks like the Dragon-types. And it can fly and has high-stats.

Fire pokemon are my favorite and i would have to say jhoto is my favorite region, and looking at that list.... Cyndiquil or charmander would be my favorite no matter what.
