The Children Are Hunted

Sparx gave him a lion's smile and a purr and Zoran pet Esper from where he lay. "You like hiding things from your trainer don't you?" he joked lightly at the Espeon, watching his sister casually soaring behind Razor. Sparx turned away toward Doom, her friend, who gave her a faintly irritated growl as he let Adler perch on his back. "And you Sparx are a silly creature who should stop causing men to stare at you." Sparx huffed and threw back her mane. Then she laughed at herself, nuzzling his arm. Cody was watching the battles with surprising intensity.

"Zora, have you planned out the rest of your team?" Ash asked.

"Nope, why?"

"You may want to consider a Banette."

"Ooh, that creepy guy... nice. Not sure Doom would like it though." The pair laughed and Zoran watched Thomas working hard. "He doesn't want to lose to me or anyone else."

"If that fight had been normal, would he have beaten you?"

"I can say with confidence no. He was thinking about too many things at once, was trying to push the battle a certain way, and hadn't been in an okay frame of mind, so he and his Pokemon were out of sync."

"What about you? You weren't feeling too hot either."

"Sparx and Doom are used to me not being so hot. And Cody's so darn zen I don't think he remembers I'm there half the time. God he's changed since the Mudkip days." Ash laughed.

"What about now?"

"Who knows?" Zoran smiled. "I want to see for myself so no bets yet."

Amber was a wonder in battle! She was so quick on her feet! Thomas knew that she wouldn't be able to keep up with Volt or Esper, but against foes that were closer to her level, she was amazing. She obeyed what he said instinly, but still thought for her self. Thomas marveled at her. Amber had been so wild before! Yhis was like a totally different creature! Then it hit him, Amber had been raised by the AAPM for battling! Thomas could see it in the way she moved. She had been trained hard already. She dodged out of the way of another Ember.
"Amber! Use Tackle!" Thomas shouted. She jumped to the right, where Magby tried to twist and hit her with a Willow Wisp and ended up on the floor. Amber hit him and he went rolling. Magby got to his feet slowly. He looked like he was hurt.
"That's enough for now. We don't want to make our pokemon faint while we train! Magby is pretty hurt, and Amber isn't too much better. You should try training your Clefairy too. Maybe against Magicarp. That way, both of them will get expierence in battling. Then soon, Magicarp will evolve! But for now, Amber and Magby need to rest a bit," Thomas said. Marcus grinned and nodded. Thomas hadn't been lying. Amber was very tired. While she had dodged that last attack, she had been hit with the one before it. Thomas picked her up.
"You were great! I think we'll work really well together if you keep that up!" Thomas said as he walked over to Zoran and the others. Volt was laying quietly near enough to Sparx so she knew he was still there, but far enough away so that he wouldn't be bothered. He was asleep. Esper was purring happily while Zoran pet him, and he was looking very smug about something.
"You guys talking about me?" Thomas asked.
"No, why would we! You're not that interesting! Get over yourself!" Vulpix said with a laugh. Thomas grinned and sat down. Amber climbed out of his arms and curled up next to Zoran and Esper, the latter of whom ignored her.
"I'm going to let Volt rest for a bit before we go back to training. He's still got a long way to go, but he's getting better. Maybe by the time we leave, he won't have any qualms about battling her. But I doubt that. Still, one step at a time," Thomas said with a grin.

Zoran smiled and scratched behind the Eevee's ears. Ash had disappeared upstairs briefly and came back down with six Pokeballs, each decorated with a strange pattern. Zoran saw this and grinned. "You want to go huh Ash?"

"It's been a while since we fought," she replied, tossing him three. He caught them and clipped them to his pants, barring one.

"Heck yes. I'm ready to knock you to the ground." Ash tossed her hair and stepped toward the field.

"You wish rookie. Same team of course."

"Wouldn't expect anything less." He took his place on the other side and warned. "Marcus you better run for cover cuz'..."

"It's about to get violent." Ash finished with a smug smile. "Go Carrie! Metal Claw!" A Charizard burst from the ball, instantly charging with metallic claws towards Zoran. The boy smirked as it was blocked by a ferocious Raichu's Iron Tail. It slammed it back and crouched, waiting to spring. Ash smiled. "You were fast enough to have Riley block it this time."

"I'm not risking my ribs getting ripped out today Ash," the male replied with equal arrogance. "Don't think this'll be easy because these are your Pokemon."

"It better not be," she replied. "It wouldn't be much fun! Air Slash!"

"Quick Attack!" Riley dodged again, flipping over the shockwaves to hit with another Iron Tail. Carrie caught one paw and slashed her stomach with a Metal Claw. The Raichu winced and landed expertly on her feet. The two Pokemon charged at each other again, aiming for weak points only they seemed to see. It seemed like calling out orders was a mere formality. The Pokemon already knew how to fight each other by the looks of it. But sometimes something would be different. All parties involved seemed to be adapting.

Zaria floated down beside Doom, who was barking encouragingly. "They've been fighting like this since Ash stopped her official journey. She didn't trust Mickey enough at that point so... yep. They know each other's strategies pretty well, and it's really good for Zora to learn how to handle stronger Pokemon. Watch carefully Thomas. There are places where you have to use someone else's Pokemon to pull off a win. Besides Ash has a strong team."

"I can see that! This is intense! It's making me want to battle her. I wouldn't stand a chance now, obviously. But After I have all the badges, I'll be back here, ready to fight her!" Thomas said. Esper purred in agreement, and Volt snorted what sounded like kaughter. Thomas had thought he was asleep. Marcus made his way upstairs, carying his Magicarp, followed closely by Clefairy.
"Where is he going?" Vulpix asked.
"Probably somewhere quieter so he can train some more. I hope he doesn't wear his team out to much," Thomas said. He was feeling almost human again. He tried to tap into that power inside of him. It wasn't as resistant as before, but he still couldn't do it! He sat there in silence, his eyes recording the battle going on for future memory, but his mind was trying to use that power. It felt so alien and wild. He had to get it under his control. It was his! No one elses! He pushed and he pushed, and nothing! It was enough to make him scream!

Zaria blinked at him. "Calm down Thomas. Your power is you. It's not going to submit so easily. You've seen with my brother; it's hard to control without the right mindset. Think about your own behavior and how others have had to work with you. That's usually what helps."

Meanwhile Zoran and Ashara grinned at each other across the stage. "Let's finish this round," they cried together. Riley and Carrie smirked.

"Blast Burn!"

"Volt Tackle!"

Carrie fired a powerful blaze from her mouth as Raichu charged forward, covered in electricity. Riley struggled to maintain her footing, almost falling backwards. Then, she charged forward, breaking through the blaze and charging into Carrie's frozen body. Blast Burn took a tremendous toll on the body all at once so it kept the Pokemon still. Riley growled, forcing Carrie to the ground. When the electricity cleared, Riley was up and cheering, badly injured but running around happily.

"All right!" Zoran cheered as the Raichu returned to his side, bouncing happily. "Good job Riley! You finally beat Carrie!" Ash grinned.

"Nice work. Two left." She smiled at the next Pokemon. "Okay Lilly! Your turn!" She tossed out what appeared to be a woman clothed in plants.

Zoran grinned. "Okay then, let's go Vana!" What appeared now was a Lapras, who let out a cry of joy. "Ice Beam!"

"Energy Ball!"

If Thomas heard her, he made no signs of it. But he did calm himself down. If he did manage to gring his power out while he was frustrated, well, Zaria might not be the only ghost hanging around. He knew he could do it. He had used it twice before, although both times he had let it go free. This time would be different. As he gradually relaxed, it got easier and easier. Soon he felt the power flowing through him again. But this was different. It was more subdued, and he couldn't pull any more than what he was getting. He let what little did come to him flow about him. After letting it wash over him, he got used to the feeling, and he tried to direct it. It came alive then, and fought him every step of the way. Thomas grunted with the work, but he shaped the wild untamed power to his will. Then something happened. A small sphere of light appeared, hovering a few inches above his hand. It was pure white. Thomas smiled. He couldn't do any more than this, though not for lack of trying. He just couldn't force anymore power out. He reached his hand out to touch it. It was insubstantial, and his hand passed through it. He tried to move it with his mind. It shot a few feet to the left.
"How do you control this thing," he mumbled to himself. He slowly moved it back to where it was. He focused on it some more, but could do nothing with it.
"I shall call it... Wisp!" Thomas said. He felt that was a little stupid. This ball of light, which could fit in the palm of his hand, wouldn't be able to think for itself! He was naming something that needed no name. He smiled, and the wisp changed to a shade of light green. How did he do that? He knew he had, but couldn't explain how! As his confusion grew, the wisp turned yellow.

The attacks cancelled each other out and Lapras winced. He wasn't a battling type. "Lilly!" As called. "Petal Dance!"

"Try and hang in there Vana!" The sharp petals tore into his skin and he growled, letting out a fierce cry.

"You think he can endure it until Lilly gets confused?" Ash asked lightly. "No way! Giga Drain!"

Zoran winced. This was pretty much it then, but just in case... "Sheer Cold!" Ash groaned as the icy blast tore through the petals just as Lapras passed out. Lilly was slightly lower in level so it was a one-hit KO as well.

"Something tells me your power depends on what emotion you give it," Zaria observed to Thomas.

The Shadow of the Night. Questions Created.

(OOC: Thanks to everyone who posted their NPC's and current teams. ;D)

They slept peacefully that night. Both of them hadn't had that good of sleep for a while now. The stars outshined the fire burning near them, yet thier beauty had gone unnoticed. Mark could not focus on anything but the task at hand. Even in his healthy slumber, Mark had dreams about what had happened to him. But mostly, about his father. He had wanted to return to his father, yet at the same time, never see him again. Why hadn't he tried to get him or hunt him down. Mark awoke and took a small piece of paper out of his pocket. It had been underwater and dried, then ripped, and finally analyzed. It was the note his father had given him. One line ran through his memories.

You may not know who I am yet.

Who was his father? He knew everything important, or at least, what he thought was important. He was 45. He liked Blue Cheese. He wasn't the smartest of people. He didn't like Gligar. Mark found that really, he knew nothing about his father. His father had never tooken to time to allow Mark to get to know him. This only brought another question. How much did his father know about him? Did he even know why he had left on this journey? He rolled himself up in his small blanket and began to think about other topics; these were too...confusing.

Shauntal. There was a question. Did Agatha know about her power? Did she know that Shauntal could talk to all Pokemon? Why could she do that? She wasn't too much older than Mark. Maybe she had a secret as well? Secrets. There were too many of those. That was when he remembered the Pokeball she had given him. He took it out of his bag and pressed the small white button. From a smaller burst of light came a small ghost-like Pokemon. Mark didn't recognize it. It looked kind of like a robot, but made of dirt. Yet, when he went to touch it, he couldn't. It handed him a small white paper.

Golett:
Ground/Ghost <3 Moves: Rock Smash, Shadow Punch, Rollout, Mud Slap

Note: Mark. I will be traveling around the Americas on the west side of Pangaea. If you wish, meet me there. <3

Mark would. He would see her there after he took care of the gyms on this part of Pangaea. "Golett. I'll name you, Fright. How about that?"

The Golett nodded then pushed itself into his blanket where they both slept. One last question. Clair. What was she hiding?

Female Golett: (level 20) Rock Smash, Shadow Ball, Rollout, Mud Slap.

*******************************************************

Regis looked at Mark's progress. He had been doing quite well which was the opposit of Regis' plan. It was something, something he didn't posess that caused him to keep pushing. His plan was to force him back home by himself, therefore weakened by the journey. But that had backfired. Regis took out a picture from his pocket. Two people stood there, a couple. Who knows where they are now? He stuffed it back into his pants. Mark would never know. He would never find out Regis wasn't his father.

"Great, so Zoran can do all kinds of things, not the least of which is shooting a bird midflight, if you believe Marcus. While I can barely conjure up a floating mood ring," Thomas said a little grumpily. The wisp turned orange in response to his annoyance. He knew he shouldn't feel like that. Zoran had given up so much for his level of power and control. He sighed and shook his head.
"Do I detect a hint of jelousy?" Vulpix asked, looking at him intently.
"Well, maybe a little. But, you know what? I'll get better with this! I can't look at this as a competition. Zor's had his power for years. I've had mine since yesterday. And they seem to be two totally different things. We probably have different ways to control it. So I won't worry to much about it!" Thomas said. The wisp turned green again as he smiled. He was starting to feel the effects of using his power, so he let it fade. After the wisp faded, he made another one, just to be sure he could. Satisfied, he turned back to the battle. Each of their second pokemon had just fainted. Thomas smiled. Zoran was giving Ash a run for her money. Thomas chacked on his pokemon. Esper and Amber were still curled up together, and Esper looked very put out at the current arrangement. Deluge had wandered back upstairs, probably to sleep some more. Volt hadn't moved an inch, but had fallen asleep. Razor was landing on the opposite side of the room, watching the battle. She was probably learning more from the battle than Thomas was. Thomas felt a lot better, though his headache was returning. He massaged his temples and sighed.

"You can do it Thomas. Just keep trying," Zaria encouraged. "You're strong too. I bet your emotions give it a different energy too. When your headache goes away again, you'll just have to see." She stood up and let out a light cry of support to the two fighting. "Besides, it's okay to be jealous. It seems like you two are rivals already anyway, at least in Pokemon. Just don't let your jealousy overwhelm you and you'll be fine. Healthy competing is good, someone told me once."

"Meteor Mash!"

"Aura Sphere!" The Lucario nimbly dodged these fists, firing spheres at Metagross. "Too bad Kira and Ness aren't a good match huh?" Zoran asked cheerfully as Lucario spun backwards to avoid a claw.

"Considering Ness can beat Kira to the floor yeah," Ash chirped.

Zoran grinned. "You think I'm going to let that happen? I know what you've been hiding from me! Kira, Blaze Kick!" The Lucario's feet lit up with red and orange light, and he kicked brutally onto Metagross' body, knocking it down and finally out, just after firing a Hyper Beam. Lucario, having been in close range, was also out-cold.

Ash whistled. "Wow that was a close call there. Think I won that."

Zoran grinned. "Yeah because of the two draws you did."

"You would have if I had held back." Ash pointed out, causing Zoran to laugh.

"Don't try that," he quipped with laughter.

Thomas grinned and stood up. He walked out to his friends with a smile.
"Great battle! That's the kind of battle I live for! How about you Esper?" Thomas said looking back at him. Esper gave him a look that said 'help me'. Thomas laughed at him. Vulpix walked over to them as well.
"I gotta say, that battle was more impressive than what this fool was doing! Go on, show them!" Vulpix said. Thomas nodded. He concentrated hard, and the wisp came back. His head was pounding, and he could only hold it for a few seconds before it faded away.
"Not bad, huh? Of course, when I feel better, I'll show you what I can do with it. It isn't much, but it's a start!" Thomas said. His mind was tired, but he still felt alive.
"Scared the crap out of me! I never saw you do that before!" Vulpix said. Thomas laughed at him. They heard a loud crunch behind them. Thomas turned around. Deluge was standing at the base of the stairs. He was holding an apple, which had a large bite in it.
"Squirtle squirt?" he asked, then took another bite out of the apple, and enjoyed the way the sound echoed through the room.

Zoran smiled. "Not bad at all," he agreed. "What d'ya say we check up on Marcus, hey?" He looked at Deluge and laughed. "Having fun up there buddy?" Ash saw Esper's plight, took pity on him, and gently moved him into her arms.

"Poor Esper," she mused with a giggle. "He's so abused." Zoran smiled at this as Zaria floated to rest herself on his shoulders.

"You're heavy Zari."

"Am not."

He went up the stairs, as she ducked from the doorway. "Go carefully Thomas. Doom and Adler will catch you if you fall."

A Pause in the Chase

"Underground?" Garet was surprised. "The sleeping quarters here are underground?"

"More precisely," the Croagunk pilot replied, "in the basement floors of this airbase here. Lotta other airbases sleep above the ground. Not so here. If this base was any larger above ground, then humans would wonder why airbase would be here in the first place. Not that much room anyways. Way it is here, TruthSeeker."

Garet sighed. "I'll sleep outside, then." The Arcanine turned and made his way back out the doors to the lawn. If there hadn't been a fence around the whole base here, and some guards, then he wouldn't be doing this. After checking the map again to make sure Clair's tracker hadn't moved, Garet made himself at home near the edge of the lawn closest to the building, lying down to just think.

It was still a bit of a puzzle that the boy would be on the run from the AAPM if the AAPM's leader was the boy's father. The only explanation Garet had thought of so far was that the boy had angered his father. Or something like that.

I'm gonna think myself to death if I keep thinking about this, he thought before drifting to sleep. He'd need the energy tomorrow.

Thomas smiled at the scene that played out in front of him. Amber got up with a squeal and ran up the stairs after everyone, nearly tripping Thomas. Thomas looked at Volt and Razor.
"You two want to come up, or do you want to stay here?" Thomas asked. Razor cooed at him, and he returned her. Volt had no intention of moving. Thomas climbed the stairs with as much dignity as he could. Vulpix was upstairs on his pillow again. He saw Esper staring at him.
"What? Just because I'm wild doesn't mean I can't enjoy a soft place to sleep!" Vulpix said. Thomas looked around for Marcus, but stopped when he heard, "Great job, Magicarp! Now, use Splash again! Magby, go ahead and use Ember!"
Thomas sighed, and took a seat on the couch. Marcus was outside, and was still training. Thomas wondered how many levels Magicarp had gained.

"We'll know if we hear a large dragon-like roar," Zaria said. Seeing irritation, she commented. "That wasn't me reading your mind, your face just gave it away." Her brother laughed from the other room. Ash groaned, placing Esper on the couch.

"Zora no! I am not trusting you with the grill! It is too cold for that!"

"Like I trust you with it," he countered cheerfully, reluctantly pushing the portable grill back.

"Sit down boy," Ash growled gently. "Your side's all bleeding again." He looked down and winced.

"Oops." She threw up her hands and went to fix him.

"How's your arm Thomas?" she asked as Deena walked over.

"Still broken, don't worry about that! But I think Zor is the worst patient ever. He needs to rest and let his arm heal! Instead, he keeps throwing it all over the place, and reopening the wound! He'll have a massive scar when this is all done!" Thomas said.
"And he loves how we all just talk about him as though he isn't here, " Vulpix asked.
"Of course he does! Doesn't he?" Thomas said with a grin at Zoran. Amber walked over to Deluge. He looked at her, then broke a piece of the apple, which she accepted with delight. Esper walked over to Thomas, who began petting him. Thomas couldn't be sure, but he swore he saw Esper shoot a triumphent look at Amber. Or maybe not.
"Allright! Magicarp, use Splash! Magby, return! Go Clefairy! Use Pound!" Marcus yelled from outside. Thomas resisted the urg to go outside and watch him. His headache was bad enough without bright sunlight.

Zoran just grinned. "I'm not a good patient, I never have been."

"You're so proud of it too," Ash mumbled, pulling at the bandages. "You should have seen the time Kira cracked his ribs."

"Wasn't that bad," Zoran muttered.

"Yeah you were! You slid down the bannister into a hot tub! That's bad!" Zaria giggled, mostly at Esper.

"You're a silly!" she told the Pokemon, petting his fur.

Esper was very pleased. He started purring loudly. Thomas laughed loudly at Zoran.
"Ha, you actually did that?! The only thing that would have made it better would have been if you had a skatboard! Then you could have grinded down the banister!" Thomas said with glee. He could see that happening, strangly enough. Amber walked over to him and meowed curiously. He reached down and pet her too.
"You humans are all crazy!" Vulpix huffed. A crash came from outside.
"Whoa! Clefairy, that was a great attack! Alright you two, return!" Marcus said. He walked in the room, with sweat running down his head, but with a satisfied look on his face.
"What's up?" he asked happily. Deluge walked over to the table and jumped up on it. He grabbed another apple.
"Deluge! You can't still be hungry!" Thomas said. Deluge grinned at him, and took a bite out of the apple.

Zoran grinned. "Mickey had one. He broke it and his arm and leg on the thing. I'm crazy, but not that crazy." Ash snickered. Zoran flashed Marcus a winning smile. "Looks like success was made," he commented and Ash looked at Deluge curiously.

"He must be a young Pokemon still. The younger they are, the more they eat." She peered out the window and sighed in relief. "Okay good, still got flowers."

Zaria looked at Vulpix. "Humans are crazy Vulpix, but Zora's a special kind of crazy." The girl yelped at her brother's light poke.

Without waiting for Marcus' response, Zoran got up. "I don't think I've recovered from being shadow food yet. I'm gonna take a nap. Don't worry, doors are mostly soundproof."

Ash stood. "Want me to fix the..."

he shook his head. "No the radio will wake me up. Stay here with the guests." He trotted off, his Pokemon following him. Cody glanced back at the others and waved before shutting the door. They heard the sound of Adler chirping before the bird opened the door and shot back out again, soaring happily over their heads. Ash reached out and grabbed him, watching the door swing shut after him.

"I think he wants to battle Razor," she mumbled. "Rufflet do get stronger battling Flying-types after all. But he can do that later."

Karen and Darrell! Magicians of Darkness.

Regis had seen one child's power first hand. Somehow, it had connected with the shadows and injured Swellow. Zoran. You will be mine soon. He had changed his goal completely. Now, instead of wanting Mark to return, he would wait for his power to react on its own. This would never have happened if he had stayed with him. Regis looked at the status of his newer branches. Paris was perfect. New York City. It was kept hidden almost too well. The secret Code ZERO Branch. The Master-Catch Pokeball was coming along at a swift pace. Soon, he would have all the CT's in his grasp. With their combined power, there was no limit to what he could do.

He turned to watch the children once again. But...something was wrong. There was something interfering with the signal, somebody. He could see their light blue hair before the camera went black. Great. Now, he had no visual on the kids, no way of knowing what was going on. He knew there was someone else after them. That he knew quite well. If the RDM got their hands on them...all would be lost.

*********************************************************

Karen had spotted and disarmed the camera easily. She marched close to the children's location and hid. There she would wait. But, after a few hours of waiting, she realized that their powers would not activate without a little...push. Her associates gathered around her foot and she prepared to lead an attack. She would have to put them under pressure.

"Houndour, sir. I need you to set this area on fire. Can you do that?"

"Yes. I will complete the given order." the small dog complied. Then, he sneaked behind them. It seemed one of them had had their arm hurt or broken. The more reason for their powers to be shown first-hand. She would pick the one she thought had the most power. That was the child she would take. She pushed her hair to one side and prepared for Houndour's strike. It happened in two seconds. The children, Zoran, Thomas, and a few others, were surrounded by fire. It spread quickly, as the ground was not terribly moist. This was no ordinary fire. It could not be put out with just any water.

"Let's see you handle this one, children."

*********************************************************

Darrell saw the two kids come up to his gym. They were obviously mystified by its grandeur and awesome mystique. He looked around, searching for the entrance most memorable. His black outfit concealed him as he lurked through the shadows. They hadn't noticed him yet. He admired the girl's village-like attire, yet it pushed her into a never-ending hole of mystery. For once, using his senses would not allow him to see into someone's mind.

The boy, on the other hand, was completely different. Darrell could pick up small pieces from how he looked. Glitter of hope in his eyes. Tragedy in his brow. Danger, by his torn sleeve. This would be a fun battle, or at least he hoped it would be for a gym battle. The previous people had come from the AAPM, whatever that was. He hoped this would be a more eventful cause. He decided on the old run and jump. He prepared himself for the surprise. It was when he saw the Golett that he paused. That belonged to a friend of his, he could just...tell. The girl next to him reminded him of another of his friends, from school. How...eventful.

**********************************************************

Mark fell over when the gym leader jumped out at him. It took him a while to get back on his feet and slow his heart down. Two deep breaths did the trick. He turned to the man, dressed properly for the gym. The gym was strange. It was as if it was levitating over the ground. There was fog all around it, even though it had been a clear day. There were spider webs, maybe a Bug gym? There were tombstones, maybe a Ghost gym? It was levitating, so perhaps a Bird gym? The answer to all of those questions was a deep no.

"My gym consists of only the finest Pokemon. The scary. The fragile. The frightening Dark-types! Yes. Now, are you here to challenge me, Monsieur et Mademoiselle...?"

"Oh, I'm Clair and this is Mark. This one here is challenging you."

"Mademoiselle Clair? Tres Bien! Do I know you, from somewhere? You remind me of an old friend."

"Yes, Darrell. It is me."

"Mon amie, Clair! Comment Allez-vous, how are you?"

"Umm...sorry to interrupt, but I would like a gym battle please." Mark spoke up.

"Yes," his french accent was thick, "Et Alors. A match for the boy. Will that be all?"

The two travelers exchanged uneasy glances before breaking up into laughter.
