As you can see from my top 8 artists, I'm a very big Pop person. I don't think there's any true definition to "real music." How can any person's definition of what music is apply to another person. Tastes vary from person to person. For one person to try to define music as a whole is mindboggling to me. It makes me rage when someone tells me "BRITNEY SUX. SHE DOESNT WRITE HER OWN MUSIC (which by the way, she does have a hand in writing her own music - not saying she does it all on her own. She knows her limitations as a songwriter and knows in order to create the most commercially appealing music, she needs the help of those who are experts in writing music) SHES NOT A REAL MUSICIAN BLAH BLAH BLAH." My own definition of music is something that makes me feel good. And so what if someone didn't write their own music - someone else did. Another person put thought and work into the lyrics. Who cares if they aren't the ones always performing it - the lyrics are still the work of someone.
On the topic of Britney's miming. Pop artists have never been known for voice strength (save Christina, but even she has her off nights). When a pop artist performs live, the voice isn't the most important part. It's the song and performance that really matters. So miming is needed for the artist to focus on the other aspects of the performance. I know for some of you more inclined to rock music that you'd much rather see a band playing live and such, we as pop fans would rather have a grand spectacle of dancers, stories, and special effects.
tl;dr: There are over 6 billion different definitions of music in the world - don't try to define it for everyone.
