Okay serious hat on, I saw that coming since everyone and their dog seems to be an artist in Japan.

The problem with the people that can't get into anime is that they rarely look beyond what's on TV, having then to put up with mediocre series or most of that Shounen Jump crap, which are aimed at kids and retarded people~
I can't get into anime because the animation bugs me. Pretty backgrounds but the fluidity of movement is years behind not just American animated films, but even Saturday morning cartoons.

Story may be good, but I lose interest when people walk like robots and look the same.

Why is anime a style? Western animation isn't a style. Every show here looks different. There are some differences between the look of the shows in anime, but they are subtle and for the most part character models seem repetitive and formulaic. They almost all have the same pointy shaped head with big eyes :\

Anime can be beautiful at times in look and story, but I just can't get passed the almost uniformity of it all.

Clearly you have not seen old anime.
Spoiler:

Good point though. Even I can admit that the above image still has the same 'look' of anime. As Jack said, the Japanese animation industry is far from bathing in green (not that any yen banknote is actually green, mind), so they must conform to what is wanted — pointy-faced moe people.
I would argue that anime was at its best during the 80s.

I seen pics of old stuff. They were rounder back then. But...that's old. XD

There is some truly gorgeous anime out there. But I think that, for me to enjoy anime anyway, that too much of it suffers from cost cutting.

I don't think you have to be swimming in green to have a different style. There's a lot of low-budget, indie stuff in North America (I find a lot of the actual shows really odd though) and they all look different from one another.

Anime is overrated. Why not read manga instead?

Mm, I'm more into reading manga, to be honest. You don't get to hear music or voices (which can sometimes be very high-pitched and noisy, in American and original dubs >.>), but... Idk. I started reading American comics, then I got into manga... XD So yeah.

*prefers video games among all other things* Sad thing is, some video games have better plots than some anime series XD And the anime that come from video games like Pokemon and Touhou, though I think someone other than ZUN licensed the Touhou anime... are usually not as good as the video games themselves.

Just saying XD

Oh yes, they certainly have the same budget. :/

Not all anime are like that, specially not the DVD versions.

Very simple-minded stereotyping, again because of the media. But I agree with you when I say I wouldn't call anime a "style".

Oh well.

^ This. Not so much for the same reasons, but I just prefer reading manga compared to anime where...a lot of what's out there right now really looks the same and finding something with an original style and a decent story is quite the task. There tends to be tons of great looking manga with good stories that will likely never be animated.

I know not all anime is like that. I've seen some relatively fluid ones. I said that there is some beautiful stuff out there.

What media? O_o

While I often don't like the look of anime, I do like that they actually have story. They're like short animated soap operas. They have a beginning, a middle, and an end and often don't overstay their welcome. You'll have like 20 episodes for one show vs 60+ episodes a season in Western animation.

In the early 90s, western animation of starting to head down this "primetime" type of television animation with Batman and Gargoyles and other things. And then Pokemon and South Park happened and changed everything for the worse. While Pokemon is not western, most of the cartoons on air here tend to just be an extension of one of those shows. Or just regular Saturday morning stuff.

I do appreciate what anime does for story and character development. It is something that western television animation needs to work on.

But as a fan of the art of animation, anime losses major points in the actual animation.

This has probably already been touched on but many animes that go from manga to anime...well it's absolutely horrid. >>; they're redoing FMA and possibly fruits baskets because the idiots who decided to animate it didn't wait for the actual authors to finish their storyline. it's rather pathetic. >>; It just creates this...mess that ends up so far off track it's an embarassment.

Oh, and manga counts as a free reading book with slow teachers who like free coffee. -innocent look- o3o

Yeah the stuff on Kids WB/Nick/Disney/Cartoon Network in the states is so generic right now it's agitating but it's what the viewers want, as disgustingly replusive as that may seem. I just wish we could go back to things like Invader Zim etc that actually had something more than teen drama and basic toilet humour. It's really...in a sense all that's out there with the exception of anime. :/

Figured I'd say good morning before I head out for my run and morning work out. Talk to you guys later on!

Gargoyles
Oh god I remember that show, was cool.

You reminded me of something...

4Kids is proud to present "Touhou: Magical Mayhem", an animated series about the magical maiden Reanna Hawkins and the days she spends with all her friends ...

Most games that are based off of a movie or a show suck, imo.

Basically yeah. And most of the anime that is actually on the air here (so, the stuff you don't have to download or buy a DVD for) isn't that good.

I was never found of what Cartoon Network put out, but WB, Nick, and Disney? They had some wonderful television period in the 90s.

At the start of "the Disney Decade" in the late 80's/early 90's, Disney was putting out some great saturday morning stuff. Duck Tales, Rescue Rangers, Darkwing Duck, etc. About five years ago we had The Weekenders and Dave the Barbarian but they didn't really give those shows the push they needed :C

WB had a great run in the mid 90s. Pinky and the Brain, Tiny Toons, Animainiacs, Freakazoid, Superman. Shows that kids could enjoy with stuff for adults thrown in as well. And then they picked up Pokemon and then all that stopped

About ten years ago Nick was in a great spot. Rugrats, SpongeBob, Rockey Power, Invader Zim, Angry Beavers. The very early 90s was also an interesting period. Rocko's Modern Life and Doug.

And there was the Simpsons. The early 90s was great for western animation on television.

I'm not sure what happened. They're not all story-driven like anime, but they were all entertaining. Now western animated television lack both entertainment and story.

The best movie and show ever created was the mario brothers.
I agree. Glug glug glug

I remember I use to watch Rocket Power with my stepdad everyday after school, lol.

Dude, those crappy cartoons are so much fun if you watch them with friends though 8) I was visiting with some friends of mine in Canada last month, and we'd wake up and still be 99% asleep, but not quite ready to get up, so we'd watch the lame morning cartoons. Yeah, they sucked ass, but half the fun was making fun of them anyway XD;
