What purpose does having an alternate account serve?

The way I see things, the main reason why someone would want to get an alternate account is so they can evade a ban. Another reason I see is that an alt can be used on public computers or other unsecured places if one absolutely must post on the forum; if it gets compromised, it can just be discarded.
