    *formal bow* Osu!

Well, I suppose I'm in. I'm a hardcore Shotokan geek and Kendoka. Been doing both for two and a half years now, I think, and I've loved every minute of it.

Alrighty, I suppose I'll start us off with a question: Open-hand or close-hand techniques, which do you prefer and why?

Myself, I prefer a close-handed strike, partly because of my style. shotokan attacks focuse the energy of the blow into surprisingly small areas. The closed hand provides a better focus for this energy, making the attack all the more devastating. Urakun-uchi, for example. although I must admit, I do like a few open-hand strikes.

    Good evening everyone.
Some of you here may know me from the Martial Arts Club at Sppf, but it would be an honor to be part of this one as well. I'm a Kendoka and Swordsman, I also have some backround in Jujitsu and Kung Fu.

And if you don't mind me asking Admant Dodger,
What Kendo dojo do you practice at? Its always nice meeting a fellow Kendoka. Specially one that likes Pokemon as well ^_^.

This is great...! I didn't know you practiced any martial arts, Adamant Dodger! ^__^
And Bluekikatana, I haven't seen you in a while too! I remember you from the Ninja Clan! :3

Anyways my avatar/signature might tell, I'm a Ninpo student. And as a Ninpo student, I study different kinds of weapons although the main focus for now is Taijutsu. How many kinds of weapons do they study in Kendo? I obviously know that the main weapon is the sword (as the name suggests too xP) but I have heard they also use weapons such as Yari, Naginata or even Nagemaki... is that true? :]

Anyways, to answer the open hand/closed hand hits, I prefer both depending on the situation. A Shuto in Ninjutsu can knock the opponent with no problem, and it can also catch them with surprise.
It depends from the situation, really... ^^

    Hey there Ningi,
Hows the old ninja clan doing? I was planning to drop down there sometime to start some havoc, but with all my training and the spring festivals going on I just lose track of time XD.

About your weapons question for Kendo.. Remember our soul is our sword. We don't need anything else to succeed in the battlefield! But if you must know ^_^.
Once someone has more or less mastered the sword they can move on to different styles in Kendo that sometimes include different weapons. We're talking about duel wielding Kodachi's, or One handed Sword with a Wakizashi in the other. And there is also the infamous two sword style that was derived from Miyamoto Musashi. These are very elite styles, but flash is trash without the basics. People who use these styles are rare. One must seek "nito" masters (duel wielders) and also be able to do all the primary waza in their sleep to have the priveledge of learning this. There is also a broad sword that is sometimes used (Very heavy). And those other weapons you mentioned I have never seen practiced with. I'm still learning though ^_^ I will probably see the use of many other different weapons in Kendo as I keep walking the path.
Here is a picture from my dojo of a "nito" practioner.

All the samurai carried with them was a Katana, wakizashi (for indoor fighting), and a tanto (throwing dagger for them ninjas). Aside from maybe some extra sake and umeboshi this is all the samurai really need ~_^.

*laughs* Yeah. The sword is our life, our soul, our heart. No other weapon is really necessary. Mastery of one weapon can overcome a limited understanding of many, many others (I'm also mixing in some Shotokan theory here). Blueki hit it on the head, actually, quite nicely.

What I think your impression of use of the Naginata and Nagimaki came from, Ningi, is that oftentimes, Kendoka will practice/train against/with Naginataka.

Anyway, Blueki, I train at the Shogun Budokai under Sensei Tom Ryan, Sensei Dan Ryan, and Sensei King. All three trained under Sensei Iwamoto. I'm proud to be their student (although Sensei Tom is rather hard to get along with... ^_^).

Woah...! That was great, Blue! ^__^ Thanks for the explanation... it was really nice to hear a kendoka's point of view ;)

Well, let's say I think we have some slight differences in Ninpo, because as far as I know, we do not consider the sword as our soul. We consider the sword as a tool, as well as an extention of the body during a fight. However, we do not concentrate on the sword only when fighting, and we use Taijutsu whenever its more appropriate.

Anyways, as a Ninjutsu student, I have done some training in Bikenjutsu, which is the gathering of secret sword techniques developed by the Ninja. Those techniques were very effective against samurai as they were unkown to them.
Besides that, a Ninja was required to learn how to use pretty much anything that could be used as a weapon, and the kinds of weapons varied from practical, simple ones to battlefield style ones, like the Bisento.
It is really important for a Ninja to survive, no matter what the circumstances. If your sword gets destroyed, or if you lose it somehow does not mean you will give up the fight. A Ninja must rely on their ability to adapt and formulate strategies relative to the situation, and any tool can be used as well as Taijutsu or escaping techniques.

I have a question though - I know from experience that samurai use to practice hand to hand combat too, like Jujutsu or Aikido. Do you guys practice anything like this in Kendo? ^^
