The Final Fantasy Thread

The first Final Fantasy game I played was FF VII, but it wasn't until 8 years after first playing it that I actually go to finish the game. I used to be a huge fan of FF VII back when I couldn't read so I didn't get the story and didn't realize how obviously exploitable the materia system was. However, last year, when I got to play through the game in its entirety, the FF VII fanboy inside my died. I noticed all the flaws I hadn't seen before and realized how boring and shallow the characters were. Now don't get me wrong, I don't hate FF VII, in fact, it was pretty awesome... until you left Midgar, after which the story just fell apart. I'm not saying I didn't enjoy the game experience, but the game wasn't nearly as great as people make it out to be.

The next game I got to play was FF VIII, which did admittedly have a slightly better plot than FF VII, but the characters were even worse. FF VII had some likable characters, but the only character in FF VIII that I liked at all was Irvine, but he is by no means a great character. Other than that, the junction system just ruins the gaming experience. The materia system is exploitable enough, but junctions take it to a whole other level. The way equipment worked in the game really didn't appeal to me either.

The next three games I played were IV, V and VI although I don't remember in which order. I've never actually finished any of them, but I really enjoy these games. I can't say I honestly remember much of all about FF IV's storyline, but I remember enjoying it more than I enjoyed any of the other FF games I had played at the time. I quit in the last dungeon when my party was horribly under leveled and I couldn't be bothered getting those levels up. The same thing happened when I tried the GBA version of the game.

FF V was great as well. The story and characters were boring, but the gameplay was just so much fun I still enjoyed the game. I absolutely love the job system.

FF VI was an amazing game as well, but I personally think you get given too much freedom towards the end of the game. The end of the game is just full of various sidequests that develop each character individually, but the main story of the game just stands still, which just made me lose interest. I played the Advance version as well, but just lost interest halfway through Kefka's tower. I loved the first half of the game, but then it just failed to keep me interested.

Then comes Final Fantasy IX and boy do I love this game. The story gets a bit uninteresting at some points, (particularly late disc 1 and early disc 2 just make me want to turn off the game) but this was the only FF game with interesting characters besides FF VI. Some of the characters were rather shallow, (I'm looking at you, Steiner) but there were quite a few characters that were simply amazing. I particularly liked Vivi, Freya and Beatrix. Kuja might not have been the best villain ever, but he's still awesome for being so incredibly manly. Besides, he's up there with Kefka among the video game villains who actually managed to destroy a planet. (and he did an arguably better job than Kefka as well seeing as the genomes couldn't return to Terra) The ending was a bit of a disappointment, but overall, this is one of my all time favorite games. As much as I hated it when Zidane was seemingly dead at the end of the game, I was sorely disappointed to find out he didn't die.

I've also played a bit of FF XII and to be honest, the only thing that has kept me interested in it is how fun level grinding is in that game. I can easily spend hours in each new area just beating up enemies. Other than that, there's not really anything in the game to keep up my interest.

My first Final Fantasy was VIII. It took me five years to beat it, but when I picked it up the second time, I became addicted. Next I played X which everyone seems to not like, but I loved it. Lulu to this day is one of my favorite video game characters of all time. Then when all of the older games came out, I played them as well. I loved all of them besides II. In my opinion that's the worst of the bunch. The game mechanics were terrible. Kefka and Cecil and those twins (their names are escaping me at the moment) have also become some of my favorite characters.

XII was... okay. I was slightly disappointed, but still enjoyed the game play. As Smarties said, grinding levels was my favorite part of that game (besides giving Penelo a huge freakin' axe). I'm really excited for XIII and that one with all of the bosses/main characters in it (Dissadia I believe).

My First Final Fantasy was Final Fantasy VII < which I loved every Prequal, to a Squal, I can care less if its overrated, Look at Mario... to overrated with the same story plot over and over and over and over again except Super Mario RPG and Super Paper Mario, but its always the same Peach get kiddnapped, and Mario saves her, and Boswer is the one who kiddnapped her. But FFVII is the best to me, and my first one.

^ Uh... I don't follow you one bit.

Roxas...were you high when you made that post? o_o

Anyway...my first FF game was I/II: DoS for the GBA. I picked it up because it was $8, but I only played a few minutes and put it aside. Then after a few months of being nagged by Andy, I decided to pick up Final Fantasy X, which I immediately got hooked on. I still consider it to be my "true" first game in the series, and it's one of my favorite games.

After I beat X, I picked up XII. The gameplay was great, but I really hated the fact that plot and character development were almost non-existent. It really brought the game down in my eyes. Took me like four months to beat it too.

I got VI when it came out for the GBA, and I absolutely loved Kefka as the villain. The game was great until the last half, when it just went to total crap and became one big fetch quest for your party members. That really hurt it.

Erica sent me her copy of VII and I really couldn't get into it at first, but then a few hours in it just clicked and I fell in love with it. There were some parts that just sucked, and the graphics don't hold up well at all, but it almost topped X as my favorite FF game. The only thing that held it back was the slow start and the crappy ending.

The only other FF-related game I've played is Crisis Core. Definitely my favorite PSP game (hell, it's the only game that I've not regretted getting since I got the PSP). I love how Zack is so full of energy and you can't help but like him even though you know what's going to happen to him, and Sephiroth really gets some much-needed character development as well. And the ending was one of the best video game endings of all time - seriously, the game is worth playing just for the ending. It's one of the most emotional scenes I've ever seen in a game.

So yeah...that's all for me so far. I might pick up FFIV on the DS once I get some of my backlog cleared up, and of course FFXIII/Versus XIII and Dissidia. I still need to pick up FF I/II again and try to play them too.

Final Fantasy I is amazing.. I got all the way to chaos at the end and my gba power ran out.. the i got my charger and decided to play with the charger in.. then to my horror i said my game file was corrupt.. i nearly cried my eyeballs out..

Didn't said FF1 was boring. I just said it was't as great as other Final Fantasies. To me, the best are still the ones who have kick ass stories and kick ass characters, with a good game play.

:| Well, compared to the other Final Fantasies and RPGs I've played, the plot wasn't impressive enough for me to notice it. There was the basic "oh yeah I'm trying to get back that country" but it was so disjointed and uninteresting to me that most of the time I accidentally stumbled upon where I was supposed to go while wandering around aimlessly (I did so love going around, filling out my map ♥). So yeah, while it had to have had a plot to put it all together, it wasn't a very notable one for me.

edit: whoa okay I just skimmed your post before and replied to the part addressing me but I should clear up some things too. XD

1) There are no titles on the N64.
2) Final Fantasy 7 through 9 are all on the PS1, so they'll play on your PS2, you just need a PS1 memory card. None of these have remakes on any system.
3) The older titles are all coming out for DS, or else they're on GBA, or else they're on compilation discs for the PS1, so I wouldn't really bother getting an SNES just for them. :|

I thought that FF7 was on the Nintendo64 for some weird reason.
Now that I think of it A lot of the other games do have a deeper plot than FFXII, but it is still one of my favorites.XD
That's a good idea for 7 thru 9 I will just get them for my PS2.
^_^
Yeah there seem to be a lot of remakes for FF games on the nds so I"m thinking about getting a nds for my birthday.
*Can't wait for Chrono Trigger*
But I still want to get a nes for the first and second games, although they might be extremely boring for me since I'm so used to today's gaming.
