The first Final Fantasy game I played was FF VII, but it wasn't until 8 years after first playing it that I actually go to finish the game. I used to be a huge fan of FF VII back when I couldn't read so I didn't get the story and didn't realize how obviously exploitable the materia system was. However, last year, when I got to play through the game in its entirety, the FF VII fanboy inside my died. I noticed all the flaws I hadn't seen before and realized how boring and shallow the characters were. Now don't get me wrong, I don't hate FF VII, in fact, it was pretty awesome... until you left Midgar, after which the story just fell apart. I'm not saying I didn't enjoy the game experience, but the game wasn't nearly as great as people make it out to be.
The next game I got to play was FF VIII, which did admittedly have a slightly better plot than FF VII, but the characters were even worse. FF VII had some likable characters, but the only character in FF VIII that I liked at all was Irvine, but he is by no means a great character. Other than that, the junction system just ruins the gaming experience. The materia system is exploitable enough, but junctions take it to a whole other level. The way equipment worked in the game really didn't appeal to me either.
The next three games I played were IV, V and VI although I don't remember in which order. I've never actually finished any of them, but I really enjoy these games. I can't say I honestly remember much of all about FF IV's storyline, but I remember enjoying it more than I enjoyed any of the other FF games I had played at the time. I quit in the last dungeon when my party was horribly under leveled and I couldn't be bothered getting those levels up. The same thing happened when I tried the GBA version of the game.
FF V was great as well. The story and characters were boring, but the gameplay was just so much fun I still enjoyed the game. I absolutely love the job system.
FF VI was an amazing game as well, but I personally think you get given too much freedom towards the end of the game. The end of the game is just full of various sidequests that develop each character individually, but the main story of the game just stands still, which just made me lose interest. I played the Advance version as well, but just lost interest halfway through Kefka's tower. I loved the first half of the game, but then it just failed to keep me interested.
Then comes Final Fantasy IX and boy do I love this game. The story gets a bit uninteresting at some points, (particularly late disc 1 and early disc 2 just make me want to turn off the game) but this was the only FF game with interesting characters besides FF VI. Some of the characters were rather shallow, (I'm looking at you, Steiner) but there were quite a few characters that were simply amazing. I particularly liked Vivi, Freya and Beatrix. Kuja might not have been the best villain ever, but he's still awesome for being so incredibly manly. Besides, he's up there with Kefka among the video game villains who actually managed to destroy a planet. (and he did an arguably better job than Kefka as well seeing as the genomes couldn't return to Terra) The ending was a bit of a disappointment, but overall, this is one of my all time favorite games. As much as I hated it when Zidane was seemingly dead at the end of the game, I was sorely disappointed to find out he didn't die.
I've also played a bit of FF XII and to be honest, the only thing that has kept me interested in it is how fun level grinding is in that game. I can easily spend hours in each new area just beating up enemies. Other than that, there's not really anything in the game to keep up my interest.
