Well I'm sure you probably already know what my answer's gonna be. :D
But... Charmander to start of with, so that I could train him and have him grow into an enormous, fire spitting Charizard!

No, to be honest I didn't use any fire types alone in battles, had quite a few on my team though but they should have let both FireRed and LeafGreen have all Kanto Pokemon, including Growlithe.

My Ninetales is best when it battles alone in a battle. It just doesn't have any real combinations that are effective with the rest of my team, although Hypnosis has been handy to slow opposing double teams
