The 'Fun' Factor

Agreed. I find the competitive addons of R/S/E (Natures/EVs/etc) tedious at best. Has anyone noticed how much more difficult HG / SS are due to there being things that weren't in G/S/C like natures and EVs and whatnot?

Uuhhhh...no. EVs, for one, were already in GSC, as were IVs. The only thing making HGSS harder is increased levels and new moves. =| Some people need to learn about the stuff they're dissing. ><

OT: I play strategically and have fun devising awesome teams that beat other stuff. I'm currently trying to build the ultimate Battle Tower team for Diamond. :D

I tend to just play the game with the flow before finishing the main story (except making sure prominent Pokemon, e.g. the Red Gyarados and legendaries, have good natures). Then I get into EV training after tha main story.

But I do find EV training fun. I mean however anyone is playing the game, it's usually for fun. After all, they are games.

EV's DIDN'T exist back then, so you should learn about the stuff you're protecting ;)

BUT DV's did exist, and they worked in another way namely that all your pokémons' stats could be maxed out by fighting a variety of other pokémon.

DVs are EVs. Just because they got a reworking (so did tons of other stuff, like IVs) and the fandom largely adopted a different name for them (keep in mind there were multipled names for these things back in the day), doesn't mean EVs weren't present.

Besides, the changes to EVs/DVs and IVs and the addition of natures shouldn't have a noticable effect on the difficulty of the main story.

Technically speaking, EVs did exist from the beginning. It was just on a much larger scale (the max was in the 60,000s) and were calculated differently. They adopted the system they use now in the third generation.

I play for fun.

When I think of people spending hours and hours EV training and breeding for IVs... I think about how Pokemon is a game, and no matter how many battles you win or how perfect your Pokemon's stats, it's not going to get you anything but a higher number on your DS screen.

I personally just play the game. I avoid as many trainers as I can, so that there's more of a challenge aspect to the game, and always just play with the Pokemon I have when I do play. I sometimes only play with a main Pokemon, and use others as HM slaves.

i hate ev training, so i just play the game. though to make it interesting, i choose different teams each time.

This is me too! :] My HeartGold game has become my main cartridge, and whenever I finish SoulSilver or Platinum, I transfer my loyal teams over to HeartGold in exchange for eggs for my next team, and start over. I never get bored of them ^^ In fact, I need to PalPark my Emerald team so I can take on Hoenn again, too...

do you buzzkill professionally or is it just a hobby?

dude your on a pokemon forum talking about pokemon -.-
when i think about you commenting on threads no matter how many times you post, all its going to do is give you a higher post count

Lol you don't need evs or ivs to play with your friends or beat the game
its only if you want to play competitively you have to care about those things.

I play completely for fun in-game, as I seriously just don't GET EV training(Besides, I would forget the numbers constantly), so I never do that. IVs are even weirder for me. I can't stand breeding either.

However, I do have Shoddy, and I do use that ~

Every buzzkill post I spend twenty seconds making earns me five bucks.

I always play with my favorites, and I make sure to catch all kinds of new species so that I can have new favorites! A lot my weaker Pokes are terrible at battling, but I don't really mind. I just train them to higher levels than the others. That said, Tourney 'Tards really piss me off...

I prefer to catch what ever I think is cool, and build my team that way.

The only time I put alot of effort in to getting the best out of my Pokemon, is when I am doing a monotype challenge. That way, I can build my team from the ground up by breeding the perfect natures, raising spefic EV's, and what have you.

I just wing it when i create a team i play for fun i dont ncare about ev training i use my favs

I'm playing HG right now and it's the first time I've tried EVing. Maybe it is a little boring? Maybe that's even why I haven't enjoyed HG so much? But no... I've been bored while playing out the storyline too and EVing is even kind of fun. So that can't be it.

Still, I guess you could say that I haven't really been "playing for fun" like I used to. I'll try to get back on that. :3

During the story I don't even think about EVs or anything like that. My party always consists of Pokemon I consider cool, HM Slaves, and types that have the advantage against the next gym. Afterwards, though, when there's not much left to do in the game, I start EV training and breeding to make a powerful team, and of course, hunt Shinies. I consider it fun and it shows that I'm willing to put time and effort into mastering the game I love.

I'm only planning on EV training guys for Online Battles.. I think I can manage the game without having to use it in story mode being the AI isn't that terribly crafty. I can bust out my old favorites like Lapras and Charizard and laugh mightly.

.. if I wasn't having fun, I'd probably stop playing and get a different hobby.. and believe me, I have plenty.
