Welcome to the Gym Type Challenge.

The aim of this challenge is to beat each gym using only Pokemon of that gym's type. For example, in Misty's gym you must only use Water-types. In Winona's gym you must only Flying types, etc.

    Rules:

    1. You must ONLY use Pokemon of the gym leader's type in battle against the gym leader.
    2. However, you may use any Pokemon you like against the gym trainers.
    3. Dual-types are allowed (eg. Starmie may be used against against Sabrina, as well as against Misty).
    4. You can use any main series Pokemon game.
    5. If it is impossible to obtain any Pokemon of a needed type before a gym, you may simply use any Pokemon for that gym and that gym only. (The only gyms
that are unable to be completed are Brock's and Roxanne's)
    6. As for the Elite Four - you may use any Pokemon that you have used in a Gym leader match.
    7. In every game, the challenge finishes when you beat the Elite Four for the first time.
    8. Legendaries are not allowed.
    9. NO CHEATING OR HACKING.
    10. You may use an emulator if you wish.
    11. Remember to say which version you are using, and update.

    Challengers:

    - Sora247_2009 (LeafGreen)
    - kathaias (Emerald)
    - grey+fish (Yellow)
    - ArcanineOod (SoulSilver)

    Champions:

    Charmageddon (Kanto)

I'll join, although my updates will probably be slow, because I'm busy with a lot of stuff right now.

    Name: Myrrhman
    Game: Red

The challenge ends at the E4, Kanto isn't part of the challenge. You may however do Kanto if you like and you will recieve a special star for it. See Rule 6 for Blue.

I'll try this in Leaf Green. Should be interesting. I plan to have 2 pokemon for each gym, other than Surge's, where it'll be a Pikachu solo with Dig.

    Nice, put me down.
    I'll made some userbars!
Sorry I'll fix them right now.
Just open the spoiler to see what they look like as a reference, until I fix them.

wow, this looks amazing! please sign me up for Yellow! :D

btw, ben: you might want to change the whole "genoration" thing in the banners… it is spelt generation
(not to be a spelling nazi, personally i don't use capital letters 'cuz i'm too lazy to press caps lock, but still… it looks bad :()

ps: question… if i'm using an emulator, could i hack a rock-type in to battle brock… just to keep the challenge's spirit alive??? :D

Thanks for the userbars. :) Better correct the spelling as grey+fish said. Could you make a non-generation-specific one to put in my signature and link to this thread?

Also, which version will you be using?

Well, I started, and devastated the entire first part of the game with Squirtle. Both of Brock's pokemon got OHKO'd by Water Gun, and Squirtle evolved!

Next Move: Get Magikarp for the next gym, and grind it to Gyara in Mt.Moon.

    Team:

    Wartortle lv16
    Quirky Nature
    Tackle
    Water Gun
    Withdraw
    Bubble

ps: question… if i'm using an emulator, could i hack a rock-type in to battle brock… just to keep the challenge's spirit alive??? :D

If you like, yes, but it is not required.

I made some userbars for each generation:

OK, first update. Sorry for doing it a bit late, I've been working solidly for the last three days (14 hour days are not fun).

I started with Bulbasaur because I could use him at two gyms. Beat Brock easily enough, obviously. I was just soloing with Bulba/Ivysaur up until Mt. Moon, where I brought a Magikarp. Lots of bait-and-switching until he evolved into Gyarados in Cerulean. Caught a Bellsprout, Paras, Abra and Sandshrew along the way, then challenged the gym. It was easy enough with the pure power of Gyarados.

Onto the next gym - not before plenty of grinding and catching though. I had forgotten to get a Pikachu back in Viridian Forest, so instead I went armed with two Voltorbs - Boom 1 and Boom 2. Led with Boom 1, and Sonic-boomed the opponent Voltorb to death. Switched to Boom 2 for Pikachu, again spamming Sonicboom. Boom 2 exploded in Raichu's face, leaving Boom 2 to easily finish him off with a final Sonicboom.

Loooong wait until Erika's gym, due to plenty of Rockets in between. It was incredibly easy once I did get there though Parasect, with Leech Life being 4x effective against every Pokemon in the gym bar one. Parasect one-shotted Victreebel, and I let my own Victreebel out to beat Tangela with Acid. I wanted all my Grass-types to get in on the action, so I put out Venasaur to repeatedly Tackle Vileplume - who in reply pointlessly spammed Poisonpowder.

Headed back to Lavender, caught a Gastly and taught it Psychic, using him to sweep through the tower. I must say, there are far too many trainers between Lavender and Fuschia. Once I finally got there, it was an easy enough match. The Jugglers were annoying with their Drowzees and Hypnos, but Koga himself was easy enough with Haunter's Psychic - I had Venasaur and Victreebel on hand but didn't need them. I'm now training a Staryu and Exeggcute for Sabrina, and a Vulpix for Blaine.

    Pokemon used so far:

    Gyarados (Used against Misty)
    [PokeCommunity.com] The Gym Type Challenge

Used against Misty and handled the job pretty easily, but ditched straight after, I'm not likely to use it again.

Boom 1 and Boom 2 (Used against Lt. Surge)
    [PokeCommunity.com] The Gym Type Challenge
    [PokeCommunity.com] The Gym Type Challenge

The twin Voltorbs did their job against Surge, but again, ditched straight afterwards.

    Parasect (Used against Erika)
    [PokeCommunity.com] The Gym Type Challenge

Parasect is godly in Gen 1, especially against Grass/Poison types. MVP so far, he handles most trainers, singlehandedly beat Erika's gym, and is likely to see the Elite Four.

    Venusaur
    (Used against Erika and Koga)
    [PokeCommunity.com] The Gym Type Challenge

My starter is decent, but nothing special. His moveset is poor (he still has Tackle), I think we've seen the end of him now.

Victreebel (Used against Erika and Koga)
    [PokeCommunity.com] The Gym Type Challenge

I like Victreebel, I used one on my very first team. Wrap is nicely broken in Gen I. But he's done all the gyms he can, and I plan to use Parasect as my Grass-type in the E4, so out of the team he goes.

    Haunter (Used against Koga)
    [PokeCommunity.com] The Gym Type Challenge

Very effective against Koga with Psychic. Nice movepool and is powerful even though it can't evolve. I think we'll probably be seeing him in the E4 too.

Honourable mentions must go to Dugtrio and Hypno, who haven't been used yet but have been in the main team since Vermillion, and will probably go to the Elite Four.

I have completed the challenge! Hopefully this will inspire more people to update...

So, I was training a Staryu and a Vulpix, clearing a way through Silph Co as I did so. There was a lot of grinding for a while, as I also trained up a Ponytaand a Magmar in Pokemon Mansion. Heading back to Saffron, I beat the Fighting Dojo with Hypno, evolved Staryu and took them both to Saffron gym. First up from Sabrina was a Kadabra, taken care of by a well-aimed critical Headbutt from Hypno. He beat Venomoth as well with Psychic, and Starmie came in to beat Mr. Mime with Surf. Alakazam was the only one to cause me any trouble, just by being very irritating. Hypno started off by poisoning him, while he pointlessly
used Recover. Headbutt brought his health to just above half, and he used Recover again. Another Headbutt... and he used Recover again. And again. And again. He literally only used Recover the entire match. I hate the AI in this Gen. Eventually I ran out of PP for Headbutt, so I switched tactics and spammed Psychic to try and drop its Special. I got four drops, and switched out to Starmie, who took the douchebag down with one Surf.

Onto Blaine, armed with three newly-trained Pokemon - a Magmar, a Rapidash and a very special Ninetales with Dig. Magmar was first up against Growlithe. I tried out a Metronome, and Magmar used Haze. Tried again, and it used String Shot. Remembering that the Random Number God hates me, I just spammed Strength instead. Rapidash ground down his Ponyta with several Stomps. Ninetales came in to finish the job with 2 Digs each for Rapidash and Arcanine.

Final gym - Giovanni. I had been training Dugtrio for a while, and Sandshrew had been stuck in the Daycare for most of the game, but apart from that I was low on Ground-types. So I went to the Safari Zone and caught two Nidorans of different genders and a Rhyhorn. I left the Rhyhorn as it was and just bumped up the male Nido one level into Nidorino, then Moon-stoned it. Nidoqueen was what I was really interested in. I quickly evolved her twice and taught her Surf, Strength and Earthquake, before training in Pokemon Mansion. With Dugtrio, Sandslash and Nidoqueen all at lvl. 40, and Nidoking and Rhyhorn as Revive fodder, I headed to the gym.

I had a tactic at the gym, one that would've worked perfectly if the game mechanics in Gen I weren't so sucky. Sandslash used Swords Dance twice, and then took out Rhyhorn with Submission, taking hefty recoil in the process. I used Slash against Dugtrio, forgetting that Critical Hits were not boosted by attack boosts back then, and pretty much every Slash was a Critical Hit. Sandslash had enough power to take down both Dugtrio and Nidoqueen though, before switching
out for Dugtrio to come in against Nidoking. I hit him with a Dig to bring his health down very low, but then a Critical Thrash one-shotted Dugtrio. I switched back to Sandslash, but was outpaced and lost to Thrash again. Not wanting to lose Nidoqueen, I switched in Rhyhorn, who took the last Thrash comfortably, and finished Nidoking off with Horn Attack. Nidoqueen ended the match with a Surf against Rhydon.

And so onto the Elite Four, and my team chosen was thus:
    Starmie
    Haunter
    Dugtrio
    Parasect
    Ninetales
    Sandslash

The first match was somewhat irritating. Starmie handled Dewgong and Cloyster fine with Thunderbolt, Parasect beat Slowbro with Giga Drain, and Ninetales got her only action of the E4, beating Jynx with Flamethrower. But then Lapras took a Thunderbolt and used Body Slam for parahax. I used Full Restore, but Lapras kept on getting parahax. I healed three times before I finally managed to get a second Thunderbolt in to end the match.

Bruno I barely need mention. Starmie did in the Onixes with Surf, Haunter beat the Fighters with Psychic. Easy. Agatha wasn't much harder, Dugtrio handled all her Pokemon with Dig and Rock Slide. Lance was only slightly harded. Starmie pretty much owned this match, beating Gyarados with Thunderbolt and the two Dragonairs with Ice Beam (freezing the first one). However, after Surf only did 2/3 damage to Aerodactyl, a critical Take Down finished her off. I switched in Haunter and healed up Starmie, before finishing off Aerodactyl with Night Shade. Back to Starmie for Dragonite, who this time took a Hyper Beam and beat the dragon with two Ice Beams.

Then came the final match, against my rival, Red. His Pidgeot was so match for Starmie's Thunderbolts, nor was Rhydon against Surf. Gyarados on the other hand managed to survive a Thunderbolt and hit back with a critical Hyper Beam to end Starmie's participation. Haunter came in to finish it off with Night Shade. I then switched to Parasect, who put Alakazam to sleep and spammed Leech Life until it died. Same tactic goes for Exeggutor. Dugtrio ended the competition, beating Charizard with Rock Slide. And so I become the first champion of this challenge! :)

    Final Team:

    Starmie
    [PokeCommunity.com] The Gym Type Challenge

    - Surf
    - Tri Attack
    - Thunderbolt
    - Ice Beam
Easily the MVP of the Elite Four. Her wide range of attacks were a godsend, and she had the stats to utilise them. Did great against Sabrina too.

    Ninetales
    [PokeCommunity.com] The Gym Type Challenge

    - Flamethrower
    - Dig
    - Quick Attack
    - Confuse Ray
Poor thing was useful against Blaine, but hardly got a look-in at the Elite Four. 2nd LVP.

    Parasect
    [PokeCommunity.com] The Gym Type Challenge

    - Leech Life
    - Mega Drain
    - Spore
    - Cut
Extremely useful in early-middle game, completely creamed Erika's gym, but Leech Life perhaps wasn't powerful enough in the later stages. He was still incredibly useful though.

    Haunter
    [PokeCommunity.com] The Gym Type Challenge

    - Psychic
    - Confuse Ray
    - Night Shade
    - Explosion
Pretty useful, Psychic was a very powerful attack, and very useful at Koga's gym. Suffered slightly from lack of a varied movepool, but was consistently good regardless.

    Dugtrio
    [PokeCommunity.com] The Gym Type Challenge

    - Earthquake
    - Slash
    - Sand-Attack
    - Rock Slide
Decent Pokemon, fast and strong and Rock and Ground attacks combined well. Didn't do much against Giovanni but handled Agatha mostly on his own.

    Sandslash
    [PokeCommunity.com] The Gym Type Challenge

    - Slash
    - Strength
    - Swords Dance
    - Submission
Easily the LVP. I love the little guy, but he was just filler, and didn't feature even once at the E4. Poor natural moveset too. Cute, though.

Come on, where are your updates?

    Soo... anyone else updating?

    And...go.

    Started and got Venusaur
    Beat Blue
Caught Pikachu and Nidoran M for future use.
Leveled Bulbasaur to 13 so he could learn Vine Whip for Brock
    Beat Brock
    Got a Magikarp.
Caught Paras and Geodude in Mt. Moon.
    Beat Rival.
    Beat everyone to Bill.
Grinded until Magikarp evolved and learned Bite, then called it a day, sick of training.

    Team:
    Gyarados: Lv. 20
    Ivysaur: Lv 21
    Pikachu: Lv 13
    Nidoran M: Lv. 14
    Geodude: Lv. 13
    Paras: Lv. 12

    Yay, update!

You're doing it a lot better than I did. I forgot about Nidoran and Pikachu and had to grind others at the last minute.

Anyone trying this on another generation?

Awesome. :) I've added you to the OP.

    Look everyone! Another update!!!

    Rescued Bill
Did more grinding for everyone but Gyarados and Ivysaur
Beat Misty w/ Gyarados... Easily. I even forgot I knew Bite, I just tackled her to death.
Beat the Rocket that gives you dig. In the battle, Nidoran evolved. After the battle, he evolved again to Nidoking! He learned Bubblebeam.
Beat Rival on the SS Anne. Got Cut
Skipped Lt. Surge. Went through Rock Tunnel. Somewhere in here I got a Venusaur and a Parasect. Went to Celadon City.
Beat Erika with Venusaur and Parasect.
Got Ice Beam, Rock Slide, and an extra Fresh Water for the Guard. Also got a Pokedoll, Thunderstone, Water Stone, and Fire Stone.
    Got Psychic.

Edit: I don't know why I'm training most of these Pokemon. So I ditched Geodude, and moved Parasect and Venusaur to the back of my team. Future plan is: Solo Electric with Raichu, Solo Psychic w/ Starmie that I'm going to catch, Solo Poison w/ Nidoking, beat Fire with someone, Solo Ground w/ Nidoking, Beat Elite four w/ Starmie and Nidoking.

Second update for the night: Taught Nidoking Rock Slide. Beat Lavendar Tower (Pokedolling the Marowak). Entered Silph, got earthquake (taught to Nidoking), and beat Rival. Lost to Giovanni because I was too lazy to go heal and Nidoking was my only Pokemon left. Beat him the second time soloing with Nidoking. (Interestingly enough, the only Pokemon I didn't OHKO is the one he is getting rid of, Kangaskhan). Went to Fuchsia and did Safari Zone, getting Surf and the Gold Teeth.
Beat Koga w/ Nidoking. OHKO everyone with Earthquake. Taught him Surf and Strength (his final moveset: Surf, Strength, Rock Slide, Earthquake)
Got a Super Rod and Caught a Staryu, who evolved and learned Surf, Psychic, and Ice Beam.
Overestimated Lt. Surge. I thought his Pokemon were around lv. 25, so I grinded Raichu to 30. The Voltorb was like 18. XD. Taught Starmie Thunderbolt (her final moveset: Surf, Thunderbolt, Ice Beam, Psychic).
Continued training Starmie in the Fighting Dojo. Beat Sabrina w/ Starmie.
Beat Blaine with an Arcanine that was 12 levels below his. Dig makes all the difference in the world. Also, for some reason, he sent out Arcanine and then used a Super Potion on it. Huh. Oh well, his loss.
One hit Giovanni w/ Nidoking. Surf Surf EQ EQ Surf. In victory Road now. Final Update coming shortly.

    Edit x3
    And done!!!
I've done the elite four enough times with Starmie to know how its done.
Loreli: Not too much trouble. Starmie soloed it w/ Thunderbolt, but got lucky paralyzing Lapras so it couldn't use body slam.
Bruno: Surf Psy Psy Surf lucky Psy crit
Agatha: I used Nidoking and Earthquaked my way through - Golbat, who fell in a couple of Rock Slides.
Lance: More Starmie: I used the Super Effectivest attacks. Aerodactyl almost killed Starmie, but it didn't, so I killed it.
Rival: This is where it got bad.
    Spoiler:

And that's that! Great challenge, it was a hard one.
