OOC: I like the title idea. Maybe I'll do it too... I used this title because if you look carefully there's a Lord of the Rings reference there, and as I was just reading part of that book today, it was fresh in my mind I guess...

"Lord of the Sticks"

Ari, on the other hand, preferred to journey alone, as she wasn't much of a social person. Yet, she kept looking around nervously at the other trainers in the program. A tan boy with spiky hair, wearing a hoodie and shorts. A classy-looking girl with glasses and hair in an elaborate bun, wearing a dress and holding a book. A brown-haired boy wearing another hoodie (though short-sleeved) and an otherwise blue and silver outfit. A preppy-looking girl with blond hair, who had already found a boy to talk to. And a tall boy with spiky blue hair and a pair of headphones around his neck. Ari took a long look, frowning a slight bit at the two girls, because she had encountered several rich and preppy and blond and classy girls who turned out to be prissy and stuck-up. She also had doubts about tan boys, having encountered a few of them in school who turned out to be goofballs. Who knows, maybe these people were actually very interesting, but Ari still avoided their gazes generally. However, her eyes passed over the blue-haired boy a few times, and she noticed that he had a Bulbasaur with him. One time when she liiked she saw his eyes, which seemed to sparkle like crystals.

But Ari quickly drew her gaze back to Maverick, who was sitting against a tree and looked to be lost in thought. Apparently the glee of the music she had showed him on the boat had faded.
"Hmm, something bothering you?" Ari asked him, kneeling down beside him.
"Treecko treecko," Maverick replied without looking at her. Of course she could not understand what he was saying. But after a while she thought she had a guess...
"Has it anything to do with that battle from yesterday?"
Maverick nodded.
"You're a bit upset about losing that battle, aren't you?"
Maverick began to nod, but then shook his head a few times. Then he nodded slowly, then bowed his head a bit--though he didn't look too dismayed.
"Treeecko treecko ko." Maverick then held up the stick he was holding as if to examine it. He stroked the stick with his other hand, contemplating it a bit. Then he threw it upwards and it flipped a few times. At once he stood up and jumped clear over Ari's head, caught the stick, and landed in an elegant fashion, moving the stick to the side.

"It's as if you treat that stick as a weapon or something," Ari commented.
"Tree!" Maverick gazed in her direction and gave her a disapproving look.
"What? It's not a weapon?"
"Tree." Maverick shook his head, then twirled the stick around like a baton. "Tree."
"It's... not a stick?" Ari guessed again.
Maverick nodded.
Ari wanted to laugh and say, "Then what is it, a baton?" but she didn't, because she didn't want to insult him.
"Tree tree treecko..." Maverick muttered, though a bit more to himself. He looked up at the canopy of the trees and lay the stick on his lap.

It's not just a stick, it's my... Maverick thought. I'm still not sure what to call it, my soul, my own, my precious... and I am not about to part with it. I feel as if it as moreso a part of me than my own heart is. I feel it shall assist me, like the staff of a mage, the sword of a warrior, the pendulum of a Hypno... Maybe it is, as Ari put it, my "weapon", even. All I know is that somehow it found its way to me, that there's something deeply special about it. I can't let such a treasure, such an appendage, part with me.

"Maverick?" Ari called, calling the Treecko to her attention. "You know what I think might help?"
The Treecko listened intently.
"I think, once we set off on our journey, we should do a bit of training--you know, to practise your attacks and such, maybe even learn new ones like Absorb. If you lose a battle, that's usually a good thing to do. You do like to battle, right?"
"Tree-ko," Maverick answered as he stood up, swinging his stick back and forth like a sword, then flipping it in his hand once again.

It was then that Ari noticed that she was right near where the blue-haired boy and the couple (so she initially thought) were standing (they were on opposite sides of her a short distance away); she wondered if they had seen her Treecko's behaviour. She kept looking from left to right, unsure of who to talk to, if anyone.

OOC: I was joking when I said lazy bum... Sadly, there's no font for sarcasm. Now to post. I also like the title idea.

The mentors soon left. "They do what they need to quickly, then get on with their lives. I like that..." Angel thought as he watched their mentors walk away. He could care less whether he traveled alone or with friends... as long as he had his music. He couldn't live without his music. It was a proven fact. Once he had been grounded from any music for 2 weeks for sabotaging his older brother's car as payback. He went into such a severe withdrawal that he spent a week in the local hospital.

Figuring part of the program was traveling with these people, he surveyed the people he'd be traveling with. A prep (*yawn* thought Angel), a rich girl who seemed like she'd act like a spoiled princess, 2 tan boys who seemed too average for their own good, and a girl he already classified as a loner. No one particularly interesting besides the loner girl.

Interested, he watched he react with her Treecko. They had apparently had a battle earlier and lost by the sounds of things and now the Treecko was depressed. Not liking to see anyone depressed, human or pokemon, having been there often, he moved over as she promised her Treecko to train with it.

As she turned to him to look around, he held out his hand. "I'm Angel. I couldn't help overhearing. As a wise woman once sang, 'If God is a DJ, life is a dance floor, love is the rythem, and you are the music. If god is a DJ, life is a dance floor, you get what you're given, it's all how you use it....'" Angel said singing out the chorus to one of his favorite songs as advice. Just after saying it, he realized how much like a fortune cookie he sounded, but when applied correctly, the lyrics could prove very insightful. Angel sighed as he hoped she didn't think he was some sort of goofball.

''A Loner Afterall?''

So, where to start?...Where to go? All these ideas kept popping into Tommy's head. One after another, the ideas were endless. Should he go to Pewter City or go and find some pokemon to catch? Man...Being a pokemon trainer was tough. And only now Tommy had started his journey! With his pokeball in his hand, he turned around to face the forest from where he entered Pallet Town. ''I bet there's some cool pokemon in there'' he thought to himself. He looked back down at the group of fresh trainers around him. They were all scattered all over the place, mostly discussing where they would go from here. The star trainers were seemingly ready to leave. It wasn't soon after that, they had gave their last words to the new trainers and had left them to begin their journey.

Just then, it really hit home to Tommy how much he actually missed his home region, Sinnoh. Sure the journey here in the Kanto region would be fun, and meeting new people each day sounded good. But he had left behind his family and friends in order to do so. While it was his dream to train pokemon, he felt right now a little uneasy. ''Maybe the suns getting to my head'' He laughed. Tommy walked away from the other trainers and leaned against a large tree. The shade covered his whole body and he finally started to think straight. Pressing the button on the pokemon, it suddenly doubled in size. ''Come on out!'' Tommy called as the pokeball opened up, revealing a bright light. Once the light vainished, a small blue and white penguin shaped pokemon stood infront of Tommy.

The Piplup backed up a little. Obviously it was somewhat afraid of humans because of the lack of interaction. Tommy smiled and slid his back down the tree until he was sitting on the ground with his back still resting on the tree trunk. ''Hey there. There's no need to be scared of me. I'm your trainer afterall!'' Tommy tried to assure Piplup. The pokemon took a few steps foward to investigate Tommy. They say that pokemon could judge a person in a few moments and decide what sort of person they were. This Piplup was no different. After a few minutes of pacing infront of Tommy, the Piplup rushed towards him with it's beak ready to strike. Tommy withdrew his hands and covered his face, getting ready to block the rushing pokemons attack. But what came next had surprised him. The Piplup had jumped up and landed on Tommy's head where it sat comfortably.

''I guess what they say about the trainers first pokemon is true after all,'' Tommy smiled. ''Pip?'' was Piplup's reply, wondering what Tommy meant by his statement.

''Well you see, people say that the bond between the trainer and their first pokemon is the best kind of bond. They'd go everywhere together and always be by each others side. I sure hope that we'll share that same bond, Piplup.'' He smiled. Piplup didn't reply, only gave a small nod and softly tapped Tommy's head with it's flipper.

Placing Piplup's pokeball in his belt bag, Tommy stood up with Piplup still on his head. ''Well I guess you can stay up there for a while. But later you're going back into the pokeball.'' He joked. ''Pip lup lup!'' was it's reply. ''Ok ok, you can go back when you want!'' Tommy sighed deeply.

Tommy looked around at the trainers. His idea was to ask someone if they would like to go with him to Pewter City. Mostly because he didn't have any clue where he was going in the Kanto region, so he hoped someone else knew their way around. There were some strong looking trainers, but Tommy wanted to find someone with as much experience as he had. As much as he hated to admit it, he hated competition, and if he ever had to battle a friend, he knew that he wouldn't be able to give it his all.

Piplup suddenly pointed someone out in the crowd. A girl wearing a long sleeved polo which was striped with three bright colors. ''Her?'' Tommy responded. Piplup nodded, as if it wanted Tommy to approach her. But she was with someone else, and Tommy wasn't the sort of person to interupt someone elses conversation. ''Sorry buddy, but she's already got someone to go with.'' He shook his head. ''Well I guess we could find our way to Pewter City on our own. I'm in no rush to get there anyway. There will be a lot of pokemon on the way, and I wanna explore as much as possible. That ok with you?'' Tommy wondered. Piplup tapped Tommy's head as if he was giving Tommy the go ahead.

''Alright then, let's get going!'' Tommy's heart started to beat faster. The excitement was finally kicking in. ''Pip!'' Piplup cheered, it was just as ready as Tommy was. Tommy clenched his fist and took the first few steps of his adventure. But just as he was about to leave, he heard someone calling his name from behind him. He turned around quickly, but there was no one there. ''That's weird. I could've sworn I heard my name being called'' He sighed. He turned to face the forest once again. ''I guess I'm really a loner afterall...''

"Holiday From Real"

Catherine had just ended laughing at a sarcastic joke made by her former schoolmate, when she had noticed most of the trainers had left. She noticed two trainers in particular were still there along with Drew and her. The couple were of different sexes and the most noticeable characteristic is the female had her pokemon out. It was a Treecko. Catherine really did not enjoy being around people who had their pokemon out of their pokeballs all the time and decided to skip inviting them. "Well I should be going now," Drew broke the silence and picked up his bag.

Catherine surprised he didn't invite her stumbled through a sentence, "Wait ddd… Drew."

The boy turned around, "Yeah?"

"You mind if I come along, I won't be a bur…." the girl was cut off by not words but a motion. He nodded and turned and started to walk away. Catherine caught up, and the two began to talk again.

The hot, summer sun blistered down the path. Catherine could feel herself getting dehydrated without even doing anything. The rain had now been an after thought of mother nature. The two continued on together, finally they reached the outskirts of Pallet Town. Catherine noticed a sign pointing North. It read Viridian City. This was a trainer path. The government in Kanto had created roads for trainers so that they could run into wild pokemon and escape the sounds of cars and other humans. These trails, however, were more dangerous then the normal road. Catherine had never been on one, in fact an uneasy feeling settled in her stomach.

The partners continued up the road and around two miles they could see the next city. Viridian City was double the size of Pallet Town, but not even a tenth of Celadon, what Catherine was used to. The two trainers had not run into any pokemon besides a pidgey here and there. The funny thing was, Catherine was yet to see a trainer. She had not even observed a Lyra trainer since they had ditched Pallet Town. Catherine continued walking mindlessly until she sustained a heavy blow to the head. Drew had stopped abruptly, Catherine had collided right into him. Stumbling back, Drew was a lot harder then she would have thought. Regaining her composure, she noticed that Drew had sent out his Charmander. Catherine realized what had happened, there was a Ratatta. He seemed to be guarding "his" territory. The Charmander mattered little to the rat pokemon, it didn't budge.

"Scratch," Drew calmly commanded his pokemon. The Charmander responded well, it quickly ran at its opponent and hit a direct hit. Ratatta hadn't moved. Instead he had taken the blow and retaliated. His tail struck Charmander, knocking him down. "Up and scratch again." There wasn't much he could do but scratch, his pokemon was so inexperienced. The Ratatta took the blow again and swung the tail just like the last time. Drew was ready. "Charmander, dive!" It had jumped and slid right behind the mouse. "Finish it," Drew had full control of the battle. His pokemon had done just that, the Rattata had been struck hard and fled the battle. Drew turned and looked back at his companion. "Ow, that hurt kinda," he laughed and held his back like an old man.

"Sorry…" Catherine laughed, but a thought ran through her mind. This journey… it was so real, yet if felt like a vacation. It didn't feel like reality, not one bit. Trainers had definitely moved on in front of them and she wondered if they would even pass her.

Ari was taken by surprise when Angel introduced himself--he came across to her as more of a loner than she was! For a while she froze up and didn't know what to say. But then Angel sang the song, and Ari just smiled. Something about music always made her do that. In fact...
"Hey hey, dancing with a reptile..." she sang back. It wasn't a very well-known song at all, but it was the first that popped into her mind, not to mention Maverick was a reptile. But she blushed afterward.
"No, no, I'm not much of a singer, you're much better..." Ari muttered, almost inaudibly, while shaking her head. Then she spoke a bit more clearly, shaking Angel's hand at the same time. "...I'm Ari, and I have been... dancing all over the place yesterday."

After a pause during which Ari was a bit nervous, Ari spoke again.
"...But it sounds like you heard what I was just saying, a problem on my part for not keeping things secret. Well, I went through a lot of trouble yesterday. I'm from Hoenn, so my Treecko and I were wandering around, headed for Petalburg City. On the way, a little boy stopped us and demanded a battle. I was not in the mood at all for battling, but he just kept pestering me about it. So of course, I just had to agree... The boy used a Geodude, which Maverick here couldn't attack at all, since he didn't know any Grass attacks. We were defeated, and I ran for it, to avoid paying him half of my money for the loss. But then, of course, Officer Jenny just had to stop me--she made me pay the kid for the battle. Well, after that I didn't have enough money for by boat trip here, so I had to obtain that money by... other methods."
A pause.
"Hm, so I see you have a Bulbasaur. Interesting. Just like the way you put song lyrics into conversation. I used to think a lot about doing that, but then of course I didn't want to be called a freak at my school. Thank goodness we don't have to deal with that now that we're on a Pokemon journey. Speaking of which, I hear that some Pokemon trainers start a Pokemon journey as an excuse to get out of school. I guess you can say I'm kind of doing that in a way, but..."

"Treecko. Treecko?"
"What is it, Maverick?" Ari inadvertently snapped.
"Treecko..." Maverick was pointing off towards the edge of town.
"Hm, anxious for adventure, are we??" Ari asked hypothetically, bouncing once on her heels and rubbing her chin as she spoke.

"Well, it appears Maverick is anxious to get some training done... or something, I can't fathom what," Ari remarked to Angel, while starting to follow the Treecko. "Looks we'll have to continue our talk on the walk."
A while later, Ari thought the silence awkward, and thus asked a question of Angel.
"I take it you are a fellow music fan. What kind of music do you usually like?"

Meanwhile, Maverick led the way, heading out of town towards the route that led to Viridian City. He was anxious to get to the Viridian Forest, to battle some of the Pokemon there. That way, he could master some new attacks, like Absorb, which would prove very useful against any other Geodudes he came across. But he also thought about yesterday's battle with that Geodude. True, he had sparred before with one or two other Pokemon back in Birch's lab, but this was his first actual battle, and he failed miserably at it. What was worse, he felt ashamed, and also that he had let Ari down. As a result of that battle, Ari had to work in a Pokemon Centre, and then the two of them had to sleep outside in the cold... Maverick's way of making it up to her was by sleeping with her rather than in his Pokeball, but still, he felt awfully guilty... not to mention weak.

Maverick then noticed the Bulbasaur belonging to Angel.
<"I bet you didn't lose your first battle, did you?"> he commented in Treecko language.

Angel smiled as she warmed up to the music. Music brought people together; people that under normal circumstances wouldn't give the other person the time of day. Music was a whole new language.
"Dancing in the street" Angel replied randomly. The dancing with a reptile reference brought the age old song to mind and he just had to blurt it out. The girl, Ari, seemed really shy and a bit of a loner like himself.
"You're not that bad" Angel replied to her comment about her singing. "You just need to learn to control your vocal cords a bit more. I can help if you want..."

Angel listened intently to her past, even turning off his iPod to do so. After she was finished, he figured he'd oblige by doing the same.
"Sounds like you went through alot yesterday.. Well, at least you're here now. I never even wanted to become a pokemon trainer. I want to become a pop singer. However, it didn't bode well with my dad. My dad was an ex pokemon trainer who became a researcher and professor alongside Professor Oak. So a few weeks ago on my birthday, they gave me a pokemon and told me to prepare for my pokemon journey. I flipped out and left to calm down but it was inevitable and here I am." He explained unemotionally
"hehe.... yea... we both train a grass type pokemon" Angel said nervously feeling a little insulted, but reluctant to show it. He breathed a sigh of relief when her Treecko, apparently nicknamed Maverick, interrupted her, wanting a trainging session.

"I don't mind walking and talking. I can do both with no problem" Angel said chuckling a little at his own lame joke. "Music fan is a big understatement. Music is my life. As for what I listen to, it varies but I stick mainly to pop music. On occaisions though, I get retro and listen to songs from the 50's and 60's.

Alongside Angel walked his Bulbasaur, who seemed pretty content walking along with them. Bulbasaur had a similar affinity for music as Angel did. However, his bubble was burst at Maverick's question.
<"...I've never battled before. But Angel has been training me with a battle strategy he's been working on."> Bulbasaur answered in his normal pokemon language.

Meanwhile, Angel was showing Ari one of his favorite classic songs... "Leader of the Pack" by the Shangri La's.

"This is my favorite song from the 60's" Angel said putting on a song on his iPod and offering her one of the earbuds. "It's called 'Leader of the Pack' by the Shangri La's. It came out in 1964 and made it to number 1 rather quickly. It was recently covered by Hilary Duff on the TV show 'American Dreams'." he rambled on giving a short summary of the song's history.

((OOC: I had most of this typed up hours ago but writer's block attacked and i had the page open til I figured out what to type.))

''So, are you ready to go Piplup?'' Tommy asked the Pokémon that was still sitting on his head.
''Piplup!'' The pokemon replied, waving it's hands up and down.
''Ok then! Let's get this started'' Tommy started to walk forward.

He reached the bottom of the hill that he had came down to get into Pallet Town, so he figured going back through the forest would be a good start. At least he knew which way he was going this time. Watching most of the other trainers getting partners to go along with, Tommy felt a little left out. But his stubborn side was something that he decided to keep to himself. He guessed that if he had went along with someone, they'd only be upset by his personality, so he wanted to be on his own. Or at least just for a while, until he could decide where exactly he wanted to go.

As he reached the top of the hill, the view behind him of Pallet Town could not look any better. He was happy to be out of the large group of people, so he felt a little bit better. He turned to face the forest of which he had almost got lost in before and smirked. ''Well, this is it. Our journey starts here! Let's make it one to remember, ok Piplup?'' Tommy suggested. Piplup nodded back as a reply and pointed into the forest, eagerly waiting for them to start. As he took the first few steps into the forest, he could finally start to belive that his dream of becoming a gym leader could one day come true.

Walking through the forest with the sunlight bursting through the tree branches above was a sight of beauty. The Pokemon that were all around gave off a somewhat happy aura. Who wouldn't be happy in a beautiful place like that anyway? The forest was empty, except for the Pokémon around. The other trainers at the Lyra program must have gone on different paths to avoid the forest. But Tommy enjoyed the sound of the trees swaying in the breeze, and the grass beneath his feet as he stepped on it. Already Tommy was enjoying the Kanto region. And he had only just started to explore it. It was vastly different from the Sinnoh region, especially in terms of the amount of people. Sinnoh had many cities, so you'd always bump into others while walking around.

''Hey Piplup, what do you say about us trying to catch our first companion?'' Tommy was wasting no time in pulling together his team of Pokémon. Afterall, the sooner you catch them, the faster they can get stronger and evolve. But Tommy wasn't one for forcing his Pokémon to train to grow. He only wanted more companions to travel with on his journey. It wasn't the battles that were important to him, only the experience he would gain on his quest. And while in a forest area, it would be a good place to catch a bug, grass or flying type pokemon. And everyone knew that they were among the most desired starting Pokemon a trainer could want on their team. In the distance, the end of the forest was becoming more clearer by the minute, so Tommy stopped in his steps and looked around for a pokemon he would like to catch. And just at that moment, a white fluffy shape poked out of the side a tree. A wild Swablu was perching upon one of the lowest branches on the tree. ''This is our chance Piplup! Let's do this!'' Tommy whispered.

As Piplup jumped down from Tommy's head, it focused on the Swablu. ''Go Piplup, use pound attack!'' Tommy ordered. The Swablu opened it's eyes and spotted the on coming Piplup. It flew up from it's branch and it's beak started to glow as it swooped down to attack Piplup. ''Quickly dodge it!'' Tommy yelled. Being small, Piplup was able to easily avoid the peck attack. The Swablu was to focused on Piplup, and it's beak pierced the side of a tree and was stuck. Tommy facepalmed and sighed. The Swablu flapped it's wings rapidly to try and wiggle it's way out, but it was no help. ''Fine, I'll help'' Tommy then walked over and pulled the beak out of the tree. ''There, are you ok?'' Tommy wondered. The Swablu then flew up high and started a peck attack once again on Piplup. ''Wow, this guy really wants a fight'' he grinned. As the Swablu neared Piplup, Piplup braced it's self. ''Now, use growl attack!'' Tommy commanded. Piplup let out a loud screech attack in the Swablu's direction, knocking it off course. ''Now! While it's shakey, use pound!'' Piplup then jumped up and started to pound the Swablu with it's flippers. The Swablu then fell onto the ground, obviously hurt from the attack.

Reaching into his belt bag, Tommy pulled out a pokeball. Pressing the button on the front, the Pokémon enlarged to it's normal size. ''Go, Pokeball!'' Tommy called as he threw the pokeball at the weakened Swablu. A crimson colored beam wrapped around Swablue and took it inside the pokeball. The ball started to shake from side to side. Each time it did, Tommy felt more nervous. ''Come on....'' Tommy hoped it would capture. As the pokeball reached the middle of it's shake, it stopped completely. The button on the front flashed red and the ball had stopped. Tommy tried to hold back his joy of catching his first Pokémon, but it was hopeless. ''We did it!'' He screamed loudly. Walking over to the pokeball, he picked it up and struck a weird pose with it. ''I've always wanted to do that!'' he cheered.

After his proud moment, Piplup returned to stand infront of Tommy. ''You ready to go inside now?'' Tommy asked. Piplup proudly nodded. ''Thanks for your help pal!'' he smiled. He returned Piplup to his pokeball and then placed it into his belt bag, along with his newly capture Swablu. Now that he had captured his very first pokemon on his own, Tommy was filled with spirit. ''I can't wait to do that again!'' He grinned and continued walking through the forest.

Please! I need to rescue Cyndaquil! His dad knew he was great friends, and accepted.
Sirolu then ran around to find the Team Rocket hideout, and he found it.
He beat Team Rocket and rescued Cyndaquil.
Now he returned safely home with Cyndaquil, then he told to his parents:
I want to start my own adventure, please? His parents accepted, and now his Pokemon Adventure Started!
Cynda, Cynda!
Shouted Cyndaquil.
``What is it?`` Said Sirolu.
``Wait, he looks like he is hungry.`` Said Sirolu.
``Huh, he is shining?`` Said Sirolu.
``I believe he is evolving.`` Said Dad.
``Ev... Evolving?`` Said Sirolu

Part 1: The Evolution.
``Evolution makes the Pokemon stronger, and it's appearence changes.`` Said dad.
``Oh, so thats what happens.`` Said Sirolu.

...
Quila, Quila, Quila!
``Your cyndaquil has created such a bond with you, so it has evolved to a Quilava`` Said Dad.
``Oh, Quilava, well, i will nickname it Cyndaquil still!`` Said Sirolu
``Sure, but if you shall start a Pokemon adventure, you scould have some Pokeballs.`` Said Dad.
``Oh, you are right...`` Said Sirolu.
``Here, have these.`` Said Dad.
``Really,? Thanks!`` Said Sirolu
``You scould go Cherrygrove Town, and defeat the gym!`` Said Dad.
...
...
...
When coming to Cherrygrove Town.
...
``Huh, there is no gym here?`` Said Sirolu
``Ehh, the 1st Gym is in Violet Town.`` Said a Mysterious Man.
``Oh, thanks!`` Said Sirolu.
...
When coming to Violet Town.
...
``So here is Violet Town, hey! There is the Gym!`` Said Sirolu.

"The Wing Gang"

"Ah, I heard that song before," Ari commented. "It's not something I normally listen to, but I like it nevertheless. I even attest to listening to music by Herman's Hermits or Simon and Garfunkel now and then. My music tastes are very varied, though I tend to gravitate towards the electronic stuff, especially dance. I like the kind of songs that actually have a tune, though, and I'm not a fan of hip hop or jazz or country at all. I tend to find a lot of esoteric stuff, music-wise. And I go not for necessarily the lyrics--in fact, some of the songs I listen to have lyrics that are either simple or make little sense--but rather for the general feel of the song. Otherwise, why do instrumentals exist? In fact..."

Ari began to take out her mobile and the ear buds from before, thinking of a song to show Angel, but just then Maverick called to her.
"Treecko. Tree ko!" He had a hint of impatience in his voice, and was standing at the end of a street that wound around to the northwest side of town. It appeared to enter a lightly wooded area.
"All right, all right then," Ari replied, putting the phone back and walking a bit more briskly to catch up with the Treecko. "Keep in mind that you're dealing with two people who were initially reluctant to start a Pokemon journey."
"And it's not like I'm sitting alone behind a computer," Ari muttered to herself, beckoning Angel to follow as she did so.
"Tree." Maverick nodded, then disappeared into the trees.

"Now, normally, one would set off towards Viridian City on a Pokemon journey like this," Ari commented, "so I have no idea why Maverick's heading that way. You see, I'm more used to an online RPG called Pokemon Virtual, which simulates a Pokemon journey. In that game, the only way to get to Viridian City is by heading north along Route 1, and really, that's the only place that makes sense to go to. I wonder if this is that route though--I didn't exactly see a big road leading out of this town."

The little path was lined with backs of houses on one side, and trees on the other. There was a bit of pollen on the ground, probably resulting from a couple of Oddish having a fight the night before. The path was grown with a few trampled weeds, which were pleasant to walk on because they prevented travelers from getting their feet dirty, provided they didn't step in the pollen. Occasionally, a Pidgey flew overhead, or cooed on a rooftop. Ari was nearly jogging by the time she reached the point where this path entered the woods, then ran straight under a canopy of oak trees. There was a sound that sounded like flapping wings and rustling leaves issuing from a spot to the left of the path, and seconds later there came a cry...
"TAAAIL!"

At that moment, Maverick leapt out from behind a tree, his stick drawn like a sword. He leaned to the side and swung the stick at something blue and white moving in a blur across his path. Then he turned around and jumped, grabbing hold of a branch with both his hands and feet, holding the stick in his mouth. Seconds after he crawled around the branch and towards the trunk of the tree, a Taillow--the thing that had been a blur moments before--flew up and jammed its beak right into the branch. Maverick dropped down from the branch and sprang back up upon landing, then spun around and hit the Taillow with his leaf-like tail. This freed the Taillow's beak, but also sent the Taillow falling head-first on the ground. To celebrate this victory, Maverick tossed his stick up, then caught it after it spun around in the air a few times.
"Treecko."

"Tail..."
But the Taillow did not give up. It rose to its feet, an angry look upon its face, growling.
"Taillll...LOWW!"
The Taillow spread its wings and called out to the sky, then cast another dirty look at Maverick. Maverick shot a disapproving look at the Taillow, scolding it in Treecko language.

Moments later, four more Taillows appeared, dive-bombing Maverick.
"Treek treecko tree!" Maverick shouted at the Taillows, while pointing to the Taillow on the ground.
I can't blame him, Ari thought. Five on one is definitely unfair. But, I think that can be remedied...
"Come on Maverick, you can avoid it," Ari commented.
"Tree." Maverick nodded, a smirk playing across his froggy face. Just before the Taillows hit him, he jumped to the side, causing them to crash into the ground. Cries of frustration and surprise issued from their beaks.

But again, the Taillows did not give up. One by one, they began to attack Maverick from different directions; one even managed to peck at his tail.
"Tree..." Maverick muttered, wincing. Again he leapt out of the way, grabbing the tree branch like he did before. Then he pushed himself off the branch with his feet, diving at the Taillow with his stick brandished. He smacked one Taillow in the face as he landed, and grazed the side of a wing with his stick, causing the Taillow to wobble in the air and nearly crash into a tree. But just when he landed, a third Taillow tackled him from behind, causing him to fly into a fourth Taillow. This Taillow swatted at him with its wing, causing him to fall onto his back. The fifth Taillow made to peck at him, which Maverick barely avoided by blocking across its neck with his stick. The Taillow choked a bit upon impact.

With a bit of great effort, Maverick managed another great jump, though he couldn't jump high enough to latch onto the tree branch as before. Instead he landed in a spot just behind where some of the Taillows were, panting.
"Try using Leer, and turn around and use Pound when they approach," Ari suggested, trying her best to help Maverick out. She knew, after all, that the odds were against him--not only was he outnumbered, but he also had a type disadvantage.

<"I challenge one Taillow to a fair fight,"> Maverick muttered during the pause, <"and I end up getting bullied by four others. Geez.">
Maverick then did as Ari instructed.
"Treecko." He gazed at the Taillows, alternating between wide and narrow eyes, and crouched down as if prepared to jump. Four of the Taillows flew at him, one of which flew overhead in case he jumped. But he didn't. Instead, he jumped only slightly, and spun around, smacking the approaching Taillows across the face as they were about to hit with Tackle. Then he bounded sideways and bolted deeper into the woods, hoping to take cover somewhere perhaps. The Taillows pursued him, although one of them hit a tree because it wasn't watching where it was flying. Another scratched its wing on a branch for the same reason. Ari ran after Maverick, hoping to keep up with him. But as Taillows can fly faster than Treeckos can run, it could only be a matter of time before they caught up to him.

Angel followed Ari listening to her rant. "A virtual pokemon journey? Thats... kinda cool. Umm... I think Treecko's going this way because he wants to train. I think I'm up for it too since I don't think Bulbasaur has any grass type moves yet either."

"Bulba" the little dino said as it agreed.

Angel put his arms in a raxed posed behind his head as he walked alongside Ari and her overactive Treecko.

"Treecko seems... eager." He commentedas Treecko called out, having found a Tailow to go against. Angel watched as Treecko as it fought rather hard against the Taillow. Anyone watching could see it. Suddenly, four other Taillow's joined in. Angel watched in suspense what would happen. Treecko seemed to be doing well at first, but then the Taillow's ganged up on him from all directions.

'Ok. Now that's just dirty.' Angel though. Without a second thought, Angel jumped in.

"GO Bulbasaur!" He yelled as Bulbasaur ran and jumped into the fray. Angel gave Ari a reassuring nod before putting on a song to sing on his iPod.

"You change your mind
Like a girl changes clothes
Yeah, you PMS like a *****
I would know"

Bulbasaur dodged to the left as a Taillow went in for a peck attack. Then Bulbasaur went in for a tackle as it got it's beek stuck in the ground. The tackle worked knocking one of the five Taillow out. Angel pumped his fist in the air in victory but kept singing.

"And you always think
Always speak cryptically
I should know
That you're no good for me..."

Bulbasaur ran over to Treecko and growled menacingly. The Taillow scattered in the air shocked, but didn't run away. Another one divebombed after him. Bulbasaur put a cocky smirk on his face and sidestepped out of the way as the Taillow got it's beek stuck in the ground.

"'Cause you're hot then you're cold
You're yes then you're no
You're in and you're out
You're up and you're down
You're wrong when it's right
It's black and it's white
We fight, we break up
We kiss, we make up"

Angel sang as the lyrics heavenly floated across his vocal cords and out his mouth. Bulbasaur nodded and understood as it pretty much waddled next to Treecko.

<"You take 2, I take 2? In times like this, it's better to work together."> Bulbasaur asked in pokemon language.

"Dancing with Two Reptiles"

Maverick was hiding from the Taillows when a song started to play. Whatever it was, it was catchy, and sounded very much like some of the songs Ari played for him on the boat. During the song, Maverick peered over the bush he was crouched behind and watched as Angel's Bulbasaur was battling some of the Taillows. (One Taillow got its beak stuck in the ground as it tried to Tackle Bulbasaur. No wonder there's an expression called "bird brain".) Angel was singing, beautifully in fact, and Ari looked like she was half smiling, half stifling a laugh.

Ari knew the song all too well, not to mention she remembered a very silly dance routine a girl and a boy did to that song in a talent show in her school. The two got first prize for craziness and attitude. Now, Ari couldn't keep her face straight. She was surprised to hear Angel sing, especially a song like this one, in the middle of a battle.
That has a similar effect to me singing a song by the Beatles, she thought. Only I probably wouldn't sound as good.
Meanwhile, Bulbasaur was battling in sync with the song, so it seemed. The growl, the dodge... During the chorus, though, he went over to Maverick and started talking to him.

Seconds later, Maverick leapt out of the bush, right when the next verse started.

"You don't really wanna stay, no
But you don't really wanna go, oh"

Deciding to play along, Maverick jumped near the stuck Taillow, hitting it with his stick right at the word "no". Then he just paused, as Bulbasaur went to rejoin him in the battle. As the chorus restarted, Maverick dodged a sideways Tackle from one of the Taillows, again smacked a Taillow in the face at the word "no", then scanned around for the other two Taillows. He saw two flying right at him from opposite sides. Then, on the word "up", he jumped, and the Taillows collided with each other instead. Conveniently, they fell right on the word "down". All the while Ari watched in amusement.
It's too bad I don't have a video camera. I would totally post a video of this on You Tube.

Just then there was a brief musical break. Maverick took the time to look around, first at Angel, then at Ari, then at Bulbasaur. He winked at each one in turn. At the next verse he continued the battle.

"We used to be
Just like twins, so it seems
The same energy
Now's a dead battery
Used to laugh 'bout nothing
Now you're plain boring
I should know that you're not gonna change"

Two Taillows pursued him during this time, while the other two went after Bulbasaur (one of which was the one with its beak stuck in the ground). The two that went after Maverick were the ones who had just Tackled each other, so at this point, they struggled to get up. First the two growled at him, then they shouted "Taillow!" together and jumped. Flying around the Treecko in a figure eight, they blew dust in his face, or otherwise just confused him. One pecked him on the head as he passed. Moments later, the second Taillow tried to do the same thing, but just then Maverick reached up and grabbed the annoying bird by the neck. Choking, it fell to the ground again, upon which Maverick started to stomp on it. All this wasn't in sync at all to the music, unlike before; Bulbasaur probably did much better in that respect. The only thing here that was sort of in sync was that during the last line, the other Taillow growled while Maverick stared. On "you're not gonna change", the Taillow tried once again to Tackle Maverick, but as before, he smacked him to the side with his stick. During the following chorus, he just proceeded to Pound the two Taillows with his tail, making sure they would actually stay down this time.

After a few Pounds, though ("But you don't really wanna go, oh", Angel sang), Maverick felt a strange feeling inside of him, as if a new power was emerging. For a moment, he though he held the very power of the earth within him, the trees especially. Feeling this power surge, he stepped back from the Taillows, extending his hand at them. (At this point, an instrumental break started in the song.) Tiny green orbs emerged from the Taillows, floating up in the air to meet his round webbed fingertips. A green aura enveloped his leafy tail, absorbing the collected energy. When he finished, he felt slightly rejuvenated. The attack wasn't very effective against Flying-types like Taillow, but it still worked nevertheless. The Taillows didn't even try to get up at that point. A second or two later, Angel sung a hilariously appropriate line: "Someone call the doctor". Ari, who had been watching her Treecko in amazement, snickered at this coincidence.

As a little victory dance, Maverick tossed his stick up in the air. He danced around in time with the song, then caught the stick and kneeled down at the same time. Standing up just at the end of that verse, he fixed his eyes on the Bulbasaur, watching to see if he could defeat his two Taillows.

Angel half smiled while singing the song as Treecko suddenly started doing better in battle after using the song to sync his attacks. His eyes though then trained onto Bulbasaur. Bulbasaur was dodging the Taillow's attacks apparently waiting till all eyes were on him.

"Cause you're hot then you're cold
You're yes then you're no
You're in and you're out
You're up and you're down
You're wrong when it's right
It's black and it's white
We fight, we break up
We kiss, we make up"

A Taillow went in for a tackle. Bulbasaur saw it coming and hopped backwards just before the Taillow noticed and altered it's flight path. Bulbasaur pushed with his rear legs using the force of his landing and the push of his legs to launch himself in the air (You're up). Then Gravity took over as Bulbasaur landed on the Taillow on his descent (and your down). The Taillow fell to the gound with a loud crash. Taillow was down for the count (You're wrong when it's right). 1 down. 1 to go.

"You're hot then you're cold
You're yes then you're no
You're in and you're out
You're up and you're down
You're wrong when it's right
It's black and it's white
We fight, we break up
We kiss, we make up"

Bulbasaur felt something strange inside his bulb as the next chorus was about to start (You're hot). Acting on instinct, it aimed it's bulb at the remaining Taillow which was coming in for a tackle attack (Then you're cold). Bulbasaur waited til Talliow was in the right position (You're in). At that moment, Taillow moved into position. Bulbasaur pushed and a seed shot out of the top of the bulb (and you're out). Taillow diidn't know what hit it as vines wrapped around it as the seed latched on (You're up). With it's wings suddenly at it's side due to the vines from the seed, Taillow fell to the ground (and you're down). The Taillow struggled to get out of th vines clutches but they got tighter, then thorns pierced into Taillow's body and absorbed energy through them as Taillow began to struiggle less and less until it couldn't move anymore. Meanwhile, Bulbasaur looked refreshed as it had just performed the Leech Seed attack.

With the Taillow's defeated, Angel finally stopped singing. He turned to Ari and cleared his throat. "Ahem. eems like we make a good team..."

"On the Road to Viridian... I think"

Ari nodded. "And, it seems that both of our Pokemon have learned a new attack. Absorb and Leech Seed, two Grass-type attacks. Leech Seed happs to be one of my favourite Pokemon attacks, in fact. I like how it slowly drains the foe's energy, while healing your Pokemon at the same time. It's very useful. The only downside, of course, is that it doesn't work against other Grass-types. But I guess that's all right; if we were in another double battle and Bulbasaur's Leech Seed accidentally hit Maverick, it wouldn't harm him. Anyway, nice job with the song. You really do have a good singing voice."

Ari felt the slightest bit of shame as she said this, as she always did when complimenting someone, but perhaps that was a petty thing about her that she must overcome eventually. For now, she and Angel and the two Grass Pokemon had won a victory against four Taillows, and they had learned their first Grass attacks. Maverick had finally learned Absorb, the very attack he wished he had known in the battle with the Geodude.

Speaking of Geodude, Ari now spoke to Maverick regarding that.
"Well, it seems you finally learned Absorb. It's too bad you didn't know it when you battled the Geodude, but if that kid were to rechallenge us, he would probably lose. Come to think of it, the gym leader in Pewter City also has a Geodude, or at least I think so. In fact, both of his Pokemon are very weak against Grass attacks. If we head over there, we can get a pretty easy badge."
"Treecko," Maverick replied, nodding in agreement. Yet even so, there was some doubt in the back of his mind, some notion that he should be wary in such a gym battle.

"Hm, the logical thing to do right now would be to head to Viridian City," Ari said to Angel. "I know it sounds cliche, but there's no use hanging around in Pallet for long, it's no easy task crossing the ocean to Cinnabar or the Orange Islands, and to the west and east are long stretches of woodlands and plains, without any sign of civilisation for many, many miles. Fortunately, I think that path right there leads right back to Route 1, the path to Viridian City."
Ari pointed to a trail that wound its way among the trees.
"Shall we go then?"

* * *

The two walked on for a mile or two, finding that the trail was practically empty. They had not found Route 1 by then, but judging by the direction they were headed, they would probably find a "back entrance" into the city. In the meantime, trees loomed over them or stood beside them, as if they were observing the travelers as they passed by, maybe even greeting the two Pokemon. Few other Pokemon showed themselves save an occasional Metapod attached to a tree or a Pidgey flying overhead, and none crossed their path or demanded a battle. The morning was clear and cloudless, though there was no glare from the sun.

It was probably noon when Ari and Angel came upon what looked like the main path. It was certainly wider than the trail they had been on, at least. Far off to their left two young boys were having a Pokemon battle--with a Sandshrew and a Mankey, it looked like. The region beyond it looked hilly, and there was a lake behind where the battle took place. To the right the path ran alongside an area of tall grass, then bent right along the foot of a shallow yet rocky slope.
"Hm, now this is strange," Ari wondered. "I don't remember there being a lake on Route 1. Unless the creators of Pokemon Virtual decided to omit it. It is a video game after all. It tries to replicate the region and simulate a Pokemon journey, but they obviously can't copy everything."

Ari looked around a bit more as she stepped out onto the route. The sun was behind her, shining from over the trees from which she and Angel had just emerged.
"The only problem is," Ari muttered, "which way do we go?"

While Ari was pondering this, an Eevee darted out from the tall grass to the right. It appeared to be bruised, as if it had just come out of a battle.
"Bii bui!" it cried as it looked behind. Ari saw that it was limping on one of its forelegs.
Seconds later a Jigglypuff emerged, following the Eevee. Not long after that there emerged a person, likely the Jigglypuff's trainer. She looked like a punk rocker, judging by the hot pink highlights in her black hair, the black shirt and red flannel skirt, and the chains on her shiny black boots.

"Finish it off with a Pound!" the girl commanded. The Jigglypuff jumped, landed on the Eevee, and gave it a good smack on the head. While that was going on, the girl took a Pokeball out of her bag.
Is that Eevee wild?! Ari thought. If so, that's one lucky girl. Eevees are very rare, so I hear. If I had an extra Pokemon on me, I'd try to persuade her to trade that Eevee. But I know I can't do that, most likely.

"Come on Pokeball!" the girl called, tossing the Pokeball at the Eevee (Jigglypuff stepped back after Pounding it). But just before the ball hit the Eevee, what looked like a giant pair of tongs grabbed the Eevee and pulled it backward. Within seconds the Eevee disappeared into the trees on the other side of the path. The girl stared at that spot in bewilderment for a few moments.
"...Okay, what just happened??" she stammered, hardly believing what just happened. "Urrgh, nonsense, we gotta try and catch this..."
Before the girl could finish her sentence, a small aircraft, which looked like a little red fighter plane, rose up out of the trees. Then it flew off with jetlike speed to parts unknown.
"Thief!" the girl shouted, stomping her foot on the ground. "Utami and I searched for DAYS for that Eevee, and now, you stupid dolt, YOU have the nerve to snatch it away from me! You greedy ******* *******!"
The girl glanced toward the two boys having their battle.
"Yah, I don't care if they heard that. I just don't..."

It was then that the girl noticed Angel and Ari standing there, their Pokemon next to them.
"What are you lovebirds looking at?" she blurted, her arms crossed and her foot tapping the ground.
Ari's brow furrowed. "We're not... lovers..." she murmured in a low voice.

"Lost?"

The two trainers had entered into a different world. One never thought possible, one they had never witnessed. Night had cast itself upon the couple, and for the first time in her life Catherine felt helpless. Her partner hardly acknowledged her and they had been walking hours upon hours. There is no way this route is THIS long. The girl thought logically. They had started their adventure around one p.m. and this was just getting crazy. Six hours for one route is insane, we made a mistake somewhere., "Drew... I think we have seen that tree before," the teen girl observed unsure.

"No we haven't," the boy replied harshly, unforgiving. Then it hit her. Years of school did not prepare her for this, for these feelings. There to her right was the rock in which she had sat upon three hours prior.

"See there is the rock I... I... s.. at on..." she couldn't hold it in; her emotions spilled like boiling water. She fell to her knees and grasped the dirt. Drew hadn't stopped. He wasn't going to. Her feet were clothed in fashion flats, nothing made to endure hours of walking... walking in circles. They had probably past this rock several times today, and she had just noticed. They had both just noticed. The noise of Drew's footsteps stopped. Great he is out of site. What am I to do now. The moment of silence was crushed by the noise of footsteps coming toward her. She tried to compose herself, wiping tears away from her eyes, she took one final, deep, and sniffling breath. She looked up, it was Drew.

"It's okay we got this," the boy stretched his arm out with compassion. The girl took it, her face turned to bright scarlet. "Let's regroup, we will figure out where we are." He reached into his pack grabbing two power bars and a map. He gave one to Catherine, and kept the other for himself. "That isn't the same rock you sat on earlier. We still made a big mistake. We entered the forest a few hours back if you didn't noticed. Look how much denser the trees are now then when we first started. I think we are in Viridian Forest, we skipped the city on this path here." He pointed to a small line on the map representing where they were now. "Edward's Pass, the map says. I remember Mr. Ratter telling about paths like this in geography. They were made by early day traders, but are hardly used today." He talked with so much knowledge and sense. That was just it. It made so much sense. She even remembered her teacher telling her to be weary of these paths because they were often unmarked and uncleared.

"Okay. That makes tons of sense. How are we going to get back to the city?" This question came out without much thought.

"Get back to the city?" He asked sarcastically. "We are not going to Viridian City anymore. We are much to far to get back in anything close to a timely manner." He was much more serious this time. "We camp tonight hun." He glanced at her clothes and smiled.

"Oh." She replied haunted by the thought of camping out. Why am I even trying to become a trainer! HA! I can't even camp out for a night when I don't plan to.

*Flashback*

The quiet, soft breeze breached the unprotected doorway. The house was over crowded by visitors. The party was huddled around the large plasma T.V. screen. They watched in awe as the top trainer from Johto, Sujima Nakamora, escaped a sure defeat from the younger challenger from Kanto. The young child, Catherine, couldn't believe her eyes as the Steelix toppled to the ground signifying the end of the match. Nakamora's weakened Jolteon had managed to down a Steelix. The Johto stadium roared in praise. Nakamora's last pokemon, a Jolteon, had managed to defeat the last three pokemon of the challenger. It was unbelievable...

*End of Flashback*

That's why I am a trainer. To inspire young kids like Nakamora did for me. I can do this I have to toughen up. She reached into her bag pulling out her folded tent, grabbing the very small amount of poles; she put it together. It is pretty amazing how something so small in my bag turns out to be so big when made.

"I have the fire started and I cleared a place for us to sit." After helping Drew with his tent, Catherine sat next to the blazing fire. She released her pokemon for the first time. The ball flew back into its trainer's hand like it was supposed to, the released creature investigated his surroundings. Master and pokemon locked eyes. The Totodile had a very harsh look on it, Catherine on the other hand was going to try and get along with it. Drew smiled, it was quite the sight. "Well I am going to go train for a bit, be back in an hour," Drew took off in the cover of night.

I should too. I don't want to get soft with my pokemon, I mean business. "Come on, we do the same," the new trainer didn't even address her pokemon directly. The two only went twenty yards outside the camp, they needed the light provided by the fire to see. The trainer lined up logs, she then nodded to the crocodile. Without much of a word, the pokemon lunged at the first hunk of wood and released a vicious scratch attack. The log was reduced to just splinters, the pokemon attacked the next log. It too split, the log following was also smothered in the fury of claws. The Totodile landed proud of his work. That was slow. He is no Crobat that is for sure, but he can dish out his attacks with great power. I wonder how well he dodges. The trainer was deep in thought as she collected a few stones. "I am going to throw these at you, you will try and dodge them. Do you understand?" The gator nodded. She threw the first one, it struck his square in the head. He hadn't moved. "Why didn't you move?! We will try again... this time dodge!" She tried to motion to him how to dodge, and again the pokemon approved. She tried it again. This time it hit him in the chest. He hadn't moved.

Why won't he move! Is he lazy? No he seemed to enjoy hitting those logs and even getting hit by those stone... he is crazy. It's getting late, we will call it a night. "Okay Totodile we are done." The two headed back to the camp. Drew seemed to be coming back around the same time. Each trainer nodded to each other, but no words were traded.

Catherine hit her bed right after Drew. Totodile was left outside his pokeball and seemed to be guarding the tent. The two trainers were spending the night only yards away from the main road, something they remained unaware of. Uncertainty plagued Catherine's thoughts.

*****
Morning had hit, Catherine had no trouble sleeping that was for sure. She removed herself out of the tent, her stomach jumped into her throat. Drew was gone. He was GONE. Uncertainty that had attacked her last night was doubled... what was she to do? She could only hope someone would find her.
